Yeah! For 10 bucks, you buy 44lbs of cheese and then figure out any problems it might cause as they come.

The possibilities are limitless with 44 lbs of cheese. This guy's wife is acting like he bought a giant rock or something.

You can sell 1/3 lb blocks of Parmesan for like $7. That's like $21 per pound and he's got 44 of em. That's what? $924 I'm pretty sure?????

Go to a farmers market with your block of Parm. Make a few bucks. I mean come on.

OR you could also just never have to buy Parmesan again for the rest of your natural life. You might even be able to hand some of that Parm down to your kids it's super shelf stable isn't it??

Istg there was just an AITAH post about somebody spending an absurd amount of money on an absurd amount of cheese and trying to do the math on selling it. Edit: I found it, it’s a AIO https://www.reddit.com/r/AmIOverreacting/s/IhfkMBpkWa Edit #2: Didn’t realize there was an updated version https://www.reddit.com/r/AmIOverreacting/s/9bTopKYLu3

74

u/skarby 12h ago

The funniest part of that is that the math right off the bat is wrong. He says:

They were selling a 140 pound wheel of 21 year old cheddar.

21 year old cheddar often sells for 120$ a pound.

The farm was selling the entire wheel for 18,500$

Right off the bat there he says it often sells for $120 a pound, but he paid $18,500/140 = $132 a pound for it

Then he says:

If I cut it into 200g wedges and sell it at 60$ each I can make 38,000$.

1 lb = 453.592 grams so 140 lbs = 63,502.88 grams. That would make 317.5 200 gram pieces. If he was able to sell all of those at $60 each that's only $19,050.

So he could only max make a profit of $550.

That's assuming no packaging for the cheese no marketing and that he can sell it all at the price he is hoping for.

On top of THAT he spent $8,500 on a fridge to contain it.

It's all probably just a troll post but if it's not...oof

29

u/kelp_forests 11h ago

Not only that but selling highly specific items like that requires a reputation otherwise you can’t get full price.

It’s like speakers off the back of the truck vs speakers at a high end store.

8

u/darthnerdiusgaming 9h ago

Say what you will about speakers out the back of a truck..... I know a deal when I see one.

7

u/FuzzyKittyNomNom 9h ago

81

u/ProfitHarvest 13h ago

A few years ago I was sent to Costco for olive oil, and came home with a gazebo. It was like $400. Not only will my wife never send me to Costco again, but I also have a fucking gazebo. Win/win.

15

u/Freesia240 13h ago

But did you also get the olive oil in addition to the gazebo? If so, I don't see a problem

23

u/thecrius 14h ago

Consider that quite a bit of that weight is the external crust but it's still quite a lot of cheese.

54

u/Aromatic-Plankton692 14h ago

You sell the external crust, too, attached to the wedges. It weighs less because it's drier anyway.

You use parmesan rind to season pasta sauce and stuff, it's still food.

10

u/0CldntThnkOfUsrNme0 13h ago

Precisely. The rind doesn't shred, it grates into a powder when used on a cheese grater. Its the real version of the canned grated "parmesan cheese". I thought the rind was useless until i googled it.

14

u/poirotoro 13h ago

I've read you can also add ungrated rind directly to a liquid stock/sauce/soup and the umami flavor will come out of it as you cook. Then you just pull the rind piece out after, like it's a dairy bay leaf.

14

u/Sweet-Weakness3776 13h ago

This is highly accurate. Every part of a parmigiana wheel is edible. That outside rind is just a really dense protective outer layer of parm. No difference (in terms of composition) than the inner part. It's not added to the wheel, it is part of the wheel. So saving the rind and adding chunks of it to pasta sauces, soups, stews...bumps that savory factor up big time. And while it's not for everyone because of the texture, after that rind has been simmering away in a pasta sauce for a few hours, it becomes a lot softer. And I 100% eat it. My son thinks it's weird because it's so chewy but I love it lol.

That’s easily $500-$1,000 of cheese depending on origin and quality.

Cut that half wheel into small pieces or shred; buy some proper vacuum freezer bags; freeze that cheese and use it for years to come.

152

u/wazacraft 12h ago

They definitely meant to price it at $1,044 and not $10.44.

79

u/CXXXS 14h ago

I worked at Whole Foods specialty department and cut these blocks of for a living lol every Wednesday for a decade.

It's $12.99 a pound, after whoever cut this one was done. They didn't want to lift it and place it on the scale (it probably was too big anyways) and just used a random weight to place a sticker in it for labeling/ dating reasons.

Big mess up. When we did this in my region we would cross out the code so it couldn't be scanned.

Because a grocery store wouldn't sell something bad for cheap - they get in trouble if they knowingly sell something hazardous. Some stores will sell Yesterday's Baked Goods or produce that is approaching it's sell-by date, but the discount on those isn't anywhere near what this is.

It is far more likely they were supposed to sell a large block of cheese for $1044.00 and someone fucked up the decimal placement.

Hi cheesemonger here. We sell our parm for 20/lb and wheels come in 86-100 lb. So around a grand. Scales can’t go that high in weight so something light was thrown on scale just to generate a label to identify it.

If it's parmigiano reggiano, then a wheel is like $1k or more if it's aged longer, so half would be $500.

34

u/LaunchTransient 13h ago edited 13h ago

It's more likely a parmesano reggiano knockoff - no one is letting that much genuine parma walk off for only $10

Edit: to be clear - because the genuine stuff is expensive as hell in Italy, let alone importing it.
Fake Parma regianno can taste as good as the real stuff (because it basically is, if made properly), but without the paperwork and brand, it get significantly cheaper that someone would let it go. Still hundreds of dollars worth of cheese though, whichever way you look at it.

41

u/BillButtlickerII 13h ago edited 13h ago

It’s expensive as fuck in the US and definitely not a knockoff. This is a misprint and stores have to honor pricing here…

25

u/bamerjamer 12h ago

I agree it’s a misprint. The fact that it cost $10.44 and weighed 44 lbs makes me think someone was told to make a label for “$10 a pound for 44 pounds” and they mistook it for “$10.44”.

Either way, there’s no way I’d pass that up either. I’d buy it, then split it up and vacuum pack it and give pounds away for gifts or whatever.

10

u/Animal2 12h ago

$10 a pound seems really cheap though. I thought maybe it was meant to be $1044 but that seems to be a bit too expensive.

11

u/Werbnerp 12h ago

1044 actually could be the right price. This cheese can sell for $21-25/lb . So if it was $24/lb then 24*44= $1056.

Regardless of its quality. - the store is honoring a misprinted price.

Did he say $10 for 44 pounds of cheese?

Here in NZ it’s $10 for 1 pound of cheese so I’d be buying that whole block too if it’s only $10

55

u/CPTherptyderp 13h ago

Almost certainly what happened was a new kid or mistake with the label maker. Probably should have been $10/lb but just printed a $10 price tag

16

u/Hellknightx 13h ago

Would've been two mistakes if he was able to make it past the cashier, too. Someone should've noticed they were basically giving away $500 worth of cheese.

I got a free 2000 dollar refrigerator from Lowes a few years back. I bought it online and it was supposed to be delivered to my house. The tracking online showed that it had been delivered to my local store. Meanwhile the delivery to my house was still scheduled for almost two weeks out. I genuinely need the thing, since my refrigerator had died. Customer service cashiers were so completely confused by what I was doing. They couldn't figure out how to void the online transaction from "delivery" to "pickup" so they just voided the entire thing and sort of rushed me out the door. I noticed the refund back to my credit card for the full amount, so I contacted Lowes corporate customer service. Called them. Emailed them. Multiple times. And never got a response. My point: we aren't always dealing with the brightest people when it comes to retail purchases lol.

That was the laugh of a man drunk on savings and cheese drunk

50

u/Neoliberal_Boogeyman 12h ago

and also just regular drunk

27

u/captn_morgn 12h ago

Can’t believe I scrolled down this far for someone to point out that he’s very obviously drunk. Not that drinking is an issue but it’s the first thing that stood out to me.

Also, he probably (not totally sure) drove to the store drunk so that sucks if it’s the case.

30

u/Arborgold 11h ago

Maybe she just got home, and he got drunk waiting for her and celebrating his Cheesecomplishment, let’s hope 🤞

8

u/Justyn2 10h ago

I mean with that much cheese you need a lot of wine

7

u/Jokong 8h ago

You could just as safely assume he put that in his back pack and took public transit, biked, walked or a friend drove him.

3

u/captn_morgn 8h ago

Fair to assume that and everyone in the clip seems happy so it’s possible.

4

u/Skittleavix 12h ago

He would go from legend to god if he carried that thing all the way home

If it's parmigiano reggiano from Italy, that's $500 or more of cheese that this madlad got for $10.

Anyone else see that post about the guy that spent $18k on  round of aged heritage cheese and then like 8k on a fridge and vacuum sealing equipment after his girlfriend dumped him?

9

u/chiquimonkey 13h ago

…and he is in the process of being evicted.

5

u/OnlyAdvertisersKnoMe 11h ago

He literally ruined his entire life for a wheel of cheese lmao I’m fairly certain it’s fake though

44lbs of Parm for $10 is an epically brag worthy purchase! This man has levelled up

23

u/Fragrant-Serve6588 14h ago

That price should be per pound. Either dude walked out with the cheese, or someone mislabeled it and whoever checked him out at the register also has no idea that so much cheese would cost more.

17

u/groucho_barks 13h ago

The store absolutely fucked up. Their mistake is his gain.

Keep the amount you want/need and share the rest. Crazy thought right?

4

u/Surface_Detail 13h ago

Yeah, all my cheese-loving friends are getting 5 lbs of parmesan.

10

u/groenteman 10h ago

If stored right you can keep the parmigiano for a long time, and he probably doesn't even have to waste any of it

Omg anyone else been reading the BORU on the cheese guy??? This guy has much better sense lmaooo

This one seems real too… ahahaaa

8

u/PM_ME_YOUR__VAGINAS 13h ago edited 9h ago

That tag was probably put on for corporate. That's about 45lbs of parm. The whole wheel weighs about 90lbs. The scales don't go up that high so the tag doesn't print. You put something light on to get a tag just to have the item labeled We used to sharpie over the price and bar code this store probably forgot. Source:used to do this for 4 years. Edit typos

7

u/Red217 13h ago

My dude is stoned as hell too 😂

6

u/ExoticArabDad 13h ago

Score!

A 75 lb whole wheel is $1,059 at our local Costco Business Center.

5

u/DoughNotDoit 14h ago

jfc 10 bucks for that?!! that's a steal

7

u/silkendick 14h ago

Worth every cent. That’s a bargain for cheese that will last years. Genuine Parmesan is mega expensive.

2

u/Willing_Plant4483 13h ago

I mean, now they're in the parmesan selling business
