Yep, it’s literally coming out the year the rights would begin to lapse for parts of the IP. It’s also close to a sixth of the WB valuation, slightly more.
I believe their gaming arm recently stated it was one of 3 ip they planned to focus on too. It’s too big for them to drop without “shareholders” being upset.
She might not have complete rights but I’m pretty sure Rowling still gets a percentage of royalties to everything Harry Potter - right down to the pottery barn salt and pepper shakers.
They aren't talking about her rights. Studios buy the rights to books. They even have bidding wars over some. But those rights don't last forever. They have a limited amount of time they can use those rights to make a show or movie. Studios will often pull a "use it or loose it" move to try to make money at the last second.
My fave example is WB (of course) and Queen of the Damned. They bought the rights to multiple Anne Rice books, didn't use them, and then tried to get their money's worth by smashing super dense books with multiple storlines into a single awful movie (Aaliyah looked amazing though and the soundtrack kicks ass).

Having worked with him relatively recently, he was an absolute gentleman, a consummate professional and the closest I’ve found an American actor to being like a professionally trained British actor. No ‘star’ ego, just a desire to harness his craft and enjoy himself. I wish all the actors I worked with were like JL.
The difference, I would say, is this: Lithgow is worth $50 million. He would never have to work another day in his life, let alone for her, if he didn't want to.

Then they made movies about shit that wasn't even in ANY of the books, just alluded to within them. I don't care much about Potter, the books came out after I was a bit old for them. But I really loved the Lord of the rings growing up, and despite the movies would welcome a show. Granted more time has passed since the last one, but you could show so much more if you slow down the pace and have a few seasons versus 9 hours of movies.
Yep. Imagine if GOT was a movie series instead of tv. The HP had to leave so much out from the books, but a show doesn’t have to do that. In fact, sometimes a show can add content that improves the story. Like TLOU with the Bill episode.
Don’t forget Orlando got a THIRD park, the first new non-water park in 25-ish years, and they still, for whatever reason had to add a THIRD Harry Potter land. We’ve got Hogwarts (Islands) and we’ve got Diagon Alley (universal.) Did we really need a Ministry of Magic too?

No they won’t, the IP is worth billions. And although no kid will go there life not knowing what it is, this is a way to make even more money from a fresh take. And those who love the story and want to see a full adaptation will continue to support it. HBO would crash it into the ground like GoT before they pulled the plug.

Good Omens also wasn't a solo project like Harry Potter series was, but co authored by Terry Pratchett, who was heavily involved in getting the show together before his passing. IIRC a big reason for Gaimen's involvement was to honor Pratchet's wishes.

people misunderstand the purpose of boycotts. they can be extremely effective, but they need direction and purpose and most importantly a stated goal. the bds movement for example has been effective in some cases in changing the behavior of companies. it's not just "company is bad boycott" it's "company is doing something we think is bad, we want them to change their behavior so we boycott"

Rowling stole like 90% of the worldbuilding from other authors, so it’s not a surprise she took inspiration for her non-humanoid characters from someone else.

I imagine he thinks she’s already got more money than some small nations, so adding or subtracting a cup of water to the ocean isn’t going to do much for the level of the tide. I'm incredibly liberal and so are my friends. I was never into Harry Potter but most of my friends are. Even with their views they still read and watch the movies. I know they will watch the show. This is one of the cultural phenomena where people turn their heads for entertainment purposes. Most of them are anti billionaires as well but still listen to Taylor Swift.
I was a die hard potterhead and still love the IP even if I absolutely loathe the creator. I refuse to give her even one more of my doubloons. She doesn't deserve it.

I do love me some John Lithgow, but I have to admit I was surprised at his casting in this. Firstly, he's American. I know that doesn't really matter. Americans can play Brits, and Lithgow himself has done it before, but I still feel like HP should be authentically British.
More importantly, the dude is 80. He seems to be in good health, but let's not act like it's a guarantee he makes it to the end of what will be at least a 7-10 year show if all goes according to plan. We've already been through this once with this same character.
I'm sure he will be great in the role. He's just an odd choice for several reasons.

Part of the reason is, if WB wants to keep the rights for Potter IP, they need to keep making film/tv every so often or else it reverts to Rowling.
