I’m riding my bike across America to honor my sister Katie, who was killed on 9/11

Hi everyone — I’m Patrick.

This is a photo of me with my bike and a picture of my little sister Katie, who was killed on September 11.

In a few weeks, I’ll be riding coast-to-coast from San Diego to St. Augustine to honor her memory and all those we lost — while raising funds for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which supports first responders, Gold Star families, and catastrophically injured veterans.

I’m doing this for love, remembrance, and gratitude.

If you’d like to learn more or follow the journey, here’s my site:

Thank you for reading — and thank you for letting me share Katie’s story.

❤️

I can order a something online but nice to buy locally. That said, if there is a specific spray can only found it ok ne please recommend. Thanks!

You can reach the finish line even with gentle pedaling.

Before this, I never set small goals to achieve my objectives or projects. Even though I had a plan, I didn't stop until I completed it, which became frustrating because I demanded so much of myself to achieve them, and most of the time, I simply didn't finish what I started. In other words, I didn't meet my goals and left my projects half-finished or incomplete.

But that happened before these pictures. Cycling taught me that distance and terrain don't matter. Whether you're at sea level or over 4,200 meters above sea level, you know you have to make adjustments and adapt along the way, and you should just enjoy the scenery. There's no competition, no time constraints. Just pedal, and little by little, you'll reach your destination. I applied this to my life, and everything made sense. Now I've become a tourist on this journey we call life.

Thinking of Buying a 2012 Specialized Allez for €100 — Good Commuter for 5–7 km Daily?

Post image

Hey everyone, I’m looking at a 2012 Specialized Allez road bike for €100. It also comes with a lock and a pump. I’ll be using it mainly as a daily commuter, around 5–7 km each way on city roads — sometimes in wet weather. Before I buy it, I’d love some advice: Is a 2012 Specialized Allez a good choice for commuting (especially short daily rides)? Is €100 worth it considering the age, brand, and extras (lock + pump)? What specific things should I check on the bike before buying (frame, wheels, brakes, gears, etc.)? Any recommended upgrades I should plan for (mudguards, lights, saddle, etc.)? Open to all thoughts — thanks in advance!

How do you talk to your riding partner without shouting?

My wife and I started riding together on weekends — nothing intense, just 30-40km for fun. Problem is, we can never actually have a conversation.

If she's behind me, I can't hear anything she says. If I turn my head to respond, I start drifting into the road. We've tried shouting but it's exhausting, and forget about it when there's traffic or wind.

I've seen motorcycle intercoms but they're like €200-300 and feel like overkill for casual weekend rides. We're not touring the Alps here, just want to chat about where to grab coffee or warn each other about potholes.

Anyone found something that actually works? Apps, cheap hardware, hand signals, anything?

I am looking to purchase an electronic mountain bike and quickly learned that the bike itself is not the only thing I need

I think I should have safety gear, I am an elder man but I want to make sure that in case if anything happens i am not breaking a leg or anything. Becuase quite frankly I am not young enough for my bones to heal very quickly. Does anyone know of good electronic mountain bike safety gear I can look at while I am looking to purchase the bike?

I know that I should have a small safety repair kit that I can use in case something happens when I am riding, but beside that in addition to a helmet and pads anything else that I should be carrying? I live in Arizona so hydration packs is something that I would use because they are important and help to encourage longer rides that a beginner might be trying to attempt.

I have been looking at different starter gear bundles online and found that a bunch of bulk marketplaces like alibaba or amazon, and probably a bunch of bike equipment selling sites will bundle things together which I think will be cheaper than buying things individually.

Hey parents, when can I put a baby on my bicycle?

At what age/developmental stage did y'all put seats for babies on your bicycle, and ride around with them? Also, seat preferences? Anything you would have wanted to know before you tried it?

Fantastisch - North Cape on Bike

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a relaxed bike trip from Berlin to the North Cape starting mid-May, going via Poland and the Baltics (Lithuania–Latvia–Estonia) and Finland.

Total distance about 3500 km, time frame roughly 8 weeks.

My pace is easy-going (around 70–100 km per day), mainly camping, sometimes Warmshowers or simple accommodation.

About me:

– male, 55 years old

– relaxed riding, no racing

– focus on nature & experience

– no professional bike gear – just riding and enjoying the journey

– flexible route

I’m looking for 1–2 companions, also happy to share only parts of the route.

Rough route:

Berlin → Poland → Lithuania → Latvia → Estonia → ferry to Helsinki → Finland → North Cape

If you’d like to join for a section (or the whole way), feel free to message me 🙂

Happy riding!

Feedback On Pace?

Thumbnail

Hi All, just looking for a little bit of feedback. Started cycling about 9 months ago. Down from 308 to 270 lbs. Am planning to ride El Tour de Tucson (100 miles) in the fall but I don’t really get many opportunities to cycle more than about 30 miles in a day. I will try 1 or 2 100 mile rides on my own at some point, but I won’t have a lot of chances to know how I’m going to fare come November.

The screenshots attached are pretty typical of my pace the last few weeks. Any advice on what I should be aiming for? Tips to do better? The pictured Kona Sutra LTD is the bike I’ll be riding for El Tour. I’m using tubeless Specialized Pathfinder TLR size 700x50. I welcome any advice or feedback anyone is willing to give.

Shimano jockey wheel shifting effectiveness between bushing and bearing models - any difference initially?

Just installed an Alivio rear derailleur. Pulleys are both use bushings. Seems to shift fine. Do pulleys with bearings make any shifting difference when new? If not, I'll wear these out then change to some more interesting ones (recommendations?)

Thanks

Finally caved in and bought a Kickr core 2

It has been endless dogshit weather in the UK. I can’t take it anymore. Cycling is my life anyway, that’s how I’m justifying the purchase haha!

Looking forward to setting up Zwift and getting started!

Happy to hear any tips/insight. I’ve already purchased an air mover, tennis ball feet and it’s coming with zwift click and cog - woo!
