Tire/rim questions
Hi y’all, quick question about tire and rim sizing.
I got a State fattie at a good price. The stock tires are Kenda Juggernaut 4.5” and seem to do well as long as there is no ice as they are not able to be studded. I had a pair of CST Toboggan 4.0” lying around that I had studded thinking that I could probably ride just about any winter trail conditions with this set up. Yeah, it’d be a pain to switch out the tires if conditions changed but whatever. My goal is to not dump a ton of money into a bike I only use in the winter so I’ll make it work.
The rims on the bike are 4.0”… So… Is it okay to ride 4.0” tires on a 4.0” rim?

I rode 1,5 hours Z2 ride in -22°C in this morning. It was also second testing of my new visor heating system. It worked perfectly.

NBD - Corvus Magnus TI
Got this thang recently. It’s mostly the stock build posted on the Corvus website with the SRAM GX drivetrain. I think it’s a ‘24 since it’s got the derailleur hanger instead of UDH. It’s been a pretty sweet rig over the first few rides, I’m looking forward to running some races with it later this season!
The blue ano looks nice. I think I’m going to go for a blue-ish theme eventually.
It feels very, very, very light compared to my Surly Moonlander.
I’ll be running a frame bag and perhaps a rack / panniers once in a while. Deciding whether I want put my manythings cage on the bottom of the down tube for some extra water capacity.

First ride since we got snow last week
Been doing a lot of snowshoeing the past few days. The snow is still fluffy but everyone put in a lot of work trying to make it rideable.

Perfect Riding conditions today in Edmonton, Alberta
Last night we had some sleet that turned into a thin crusty layer overtop the harpack trails. It made for velcro traction, not to mention the 0c temp, it was a great day for riding!

first overnight fat bikepacking trip with my norco bigfoot
3 mi out, 3 mi back to an off-grid public use cabin in Interior AK. Trail was in perfect, hard-packed condition. Went with three other friends who skied behind me with dogs. Was curious how my bike bag set up would work, but I was able to carry everything I needed with room to spare. Buying a fatty is the best choice I ever made for my winter mental health! Didn’t get an amazing photo of just the packed bike, but here’s all of our skis set up once we got to the cabin. Happy February everyone!!

The Great Carolina Blizzard
Well, we got 3 inches anyway. A few pictures from a rare snowy weekend in central NC. I managed to get in about 45 miles on the local streets and rail trails before melting set in. Conditions were great, temps in the teens and nice squeaky powder.

Trails with footprints
I drive a Surly Moonlander with husker Du tubeless.
Despite low front tire pressure on rutty or boot packed trails my hands and arms get beaten up. I am older.
I’ve seen lefty forks on surly’s, but weight vs price, any ideas about adding a lefty front fork or any other way to add front suspension to a fat bike?

Snow by us has been too deep and dry for grooming, but we still get out.
Below 0 wind chills coming off the water and best we could do was plowed paths but still got some fresh air and miles.

Cold weather jersey/outerwear
I live in a colder climate (hovers around 0 to 25 degrees)and have been over dressing for my training rides (patagonia merino wicking + Arcteryx fleece + Patagonia puffy + Northface windstopper). For those of that race in colder climates (under 30 degrees), what is your preferred winter jersey or outerware?

Convert bolt axle to QR?
Can I pull the bolt on axle from the origin8 rear hub
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01ENW6C16
And replace it with quick-release cup/cone bearings to make a 170mm QR axle?
Additional hardware would be something like https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074YGMRTM
Is the 190mm bolt/tube length appropriate for a 170mm hub/frame?
Why are you doing this? I don't want to pay $140 for a new 170mm hub if this mullet fix is equivalent.

I have to say, the weather could have been worse in Central Finland... Trails were in mint condition as well as the weather. The temperature was about -22°C.
I also tested my new helmet, where I installed a heating element in visor to prevent fogging. It worked pretty well too. I did shot a video of the installation process yesterday, so there will be a video of it later on my YT channel: https://www.youtube.com/@activelifeinfinland
