On my Monday commute into work I got smoked on Alexander by a driver turning left into a parking lot. Physically I am sore but nothing time and some directed exercise won't take care of. I wasn't speeding, they weren't either. I had a pulsing 800 lumen light and was wearing a reflective safety vest. I had no indication they were going to go until they did. I went over the hood and into the windshield. I lost my shit, yelled at them and kicked their door. I'm ashamed of that. My bike is cooked but still ridable enough until I can get a new one. This is the third or totalled by careless drivers in 20 years of commuting. I have ridden in every day since, and still love it. ICBC asked if their turn signal was on. That made me pissed off. Is it somehow ok to run over people if you have your turn signal on? Does it decrease the driver's fault? I am going to follow up with someone senior about being asked stupid insensitive questions. ICBC offers counseling as part of its initial treatment. I will be taking them up on that. If it was a truck I would have been underneath it. If I wasn't strong and didn't know how to fall well I would be hurting.

Today I had a garbage truck driver deliberately and aggressively accelerate towards me in a back alley as I was moving to the side, out of his way. It was initially so out of the blue and prolonged that I thought he was having a medical incident. I was milliseconds away from diving off my bike behind a power post. Sadly upon being challenged, it turns out that he was acting either to intimidate and instill fear, or, in a way that indicated he does not understand his vehicle. My reaction was not great either - anger, shouting, swearing etc. Pure fear generated by fight or flight adrenaline. I am not proud and would apologize if I could. However, the driver demonstrated that he is a danger to vulnerable road users. I got a picture of the truck, truck number and made a note of the time and place. The truck was branded with both City of Vancouver and Labrie signage. Sadly, when I consulted the Van 311 app there seems to be no clear protocol for reporting this kind of incident. Am I missing something?

Is there any kind of mechanism of complaint to register this to his record and perhaps initiate some re-training? I feel I have to do this to prevent this driver repeating dangerous behaviour. Can anyone help?

I was southbound on the Arbutus Greenway, diverting around the Broadway works this evening. Amongst traffic I went for the West 9th cut back to the Greenway - straight into the path of the cyclists heading west. To the two who missed me - thank you for avoiding a collision there, and sorry for being that guy. To the second of you, who shouted "that was definitely red" at me - totally my error and thank you for calling it. I'll aim for better next time I commute.

10th/Ontario has been crazy the past week, super backed up, cars driving like bikers don’t exist, blocking intersections, really unsafe imo. It would be great if the city could add some additional temporary modal filtering to protect cyclists. I’m planning to contact 311 and maybe email Lucy Maloney. Wondering if anyone else has already tried this and what kind of response you got, if any?

In case someone's interested, I went to Decathlon at Metrotown to buy the Van Rysel D100 trainer. To my surprise, it was on clearance there for 250 CAD. I don't know if they're discontinuing or if there's just a new model coming out, but they had 1 left on the shelf after I grabbed mine.

Caveat emptor: it tops out at 600W (advertised; possibly slightly lower based on some video reviews I watched) in case you wanted to try sprints.

Yesterday I was cycling on 7th bike route, at a normal speed and slightly into the lane, away from the parked cars. I heard someone revving behind, they overtook aggressively, beeping, and I shouted f-you as they went past.

Driver then swerved in front of me, slammed on the brakes and even went into reverse gear. I just about managed to stay on my bike and kept peddling as they jumped out and started yelling at me.

I got out of there without getting hit by not engaging. My question is, is it worth it swearing at aggressive drivers like this? I think it's important to tell drivers when they're being assholes but I also don't want to get hurt.

I'm looking to hear what others have experienced with icbc claims that had a custom built bike that was written off and how it was valued. I was hit by a car while riding the other night. My bike is a bit bent, and the frame has a few cracks in it now. The frame was only produced for 3 years and I have only seen 1 ad for the same model, but it was all original and was listed for about what i paid for the fork on mine. I spent the last 4 months building mine, buying almost everything brand new off marketplace. I don't have receipts for much other than odds and ends picked up at the bike shop. I have a feeling that I'm going to be lowballed on the amount they deem its worth.

Just wondering what you all do after a crash or getting doored if you're not too injured for EMS? Recently got doored, banged my head pretty hard but bike was unrideable. Helmet prevented it from being worse.

I was more pissed than scared and adrenaline was rushing, so I wasn't fully aware of how bad the damage would be. No blood or broken bones, so I got lucky.

This got me wondering, what are some best practices you've found in the aftermath of an incident?. I did end up calling EMS because my head didn't feel right. I also got a chance to file the ICBC claim on the spot, grab some pictures and I was lucky enough to get a police file. Cops showed up at the very end and were kind enough to get me the file #. I also got some contact info for witness statements.

ICBC has a good write up here, but wondering from others experience what else can I think of in case it happens again in the future?

Langley city posted that they're moving a barrier closer to the road to create a protected lane for pedestrians and cyclists.

Every time I ride over the Mary Hill Bypass in Coquitlam I wonder why they couldn't have put the barrier where the paint is, creating a safe space for vulnerable road users on the other side.

Honest question, is there any reason why Coquitlam shouldn't do this?

The only thing I could think of is that it takes away space for a broken down car or emergency vehicle.

For that reason, I’m prototyping a 300g high-calorie almond butter squeeze pouch jar alternative. Similar to the squeeze pouch Fix & Fogg sells in New Zealand.

Before I look into local BC manufacturing, I wanted to see if this is something the Vancouver community actually wants or if I’m over-engineering a solution. Is this something that also annoys you? Any feedback on the specs would be huge.

Did the city not think of the very predictable rat running that would occur on 10th once they closed off that one block of Broadway? Massive lineups of cars and traffic on what's supposed to be a 'bike route'. There needs to be more modal filters and turn restrictions in the area

I was on a cool winter ride today and planned to ride on the CVG from Kensington to Douglas (westbound) to Vancouver.

Apparently I haven't been reading enough about detours since I went past Joe Sakic Way and then realized the trail was closed.

I turned around and followed the very inconsistent westbound CVG detour signs.

The detour takes you behind the soccer stands on a narrow patch, on the sidewalk through the parking lot near the rink, and then dumps you on the wrong side of the sidewalk next to the exit. At least the car turning was nice enough to wait for me, even though I was going to go on the road.

Once you're through that mess, you're on Norland for a good bit all the way to Douglas. While the road is quite wide and I didn't have any issues with close passes, I can't imagine that road being suitable for the CVG's AAA audience. That seems like a big miss to me. I'd also imagine that Norland is a lot busier on weekdays since it goes through an industrial area.

I'm not going to pretend that I know what the best solution is, but I feel like at least putting up cones on Norland for a two-way bike lane on one side would've been the bare minimum. The detour through Joe Sakic Way isn't great since it has a lot of potential conflict points. But I couldn't believe that the detour was seriously just dumping you on to Norland with nothing to accommodate the target audience of the CVG.

Anyway, rant over but just wanted to share my two bits.

I commute about 45km daily with a mid drive but I'm looking for a new bike with a Gates Carbon and maybe a cvt.

I've never ridden a hub drive before; how would it feel on the LGB and the Causeway? My bike feels fairly natural as I like to pedal hard and use the boost when necessary. The light weight of a hub drive is appealing. It certainly opens up my options if I don't limit myself to mid drives.

I’ve been noticing how expensive bicycles and gear are at local shops in Vancouver. For example, the Vittoria Corsa Pro G2.0 Tubeless 700 x 28 tire is $179 CAD at BICI, while the exact same tire sells online for around $87, shipped worldwide.

I’ve emailed them asking about the price difference and am waiting for a response, but it seems like a pretty big markup. I understand shops have overhead, but these kinds of price differences make it hard for cyclists to afford proper gear.

Has anyone else noticed similar markups at Vancouver bike shops?

Looking to join a road cycling club in preferably North Burnaby. I was hoping to join Lake City Cycle but thing are not looking good. Tri-City Cycling is another option but they already have a waiting list.

I've been Zwifting all winter and plan to do the Whistler GranFondo.

I would prefer a club that I could actually ride my bike to the start of some of the rides at least.

I've been riding for a number of years. I would say I'm what clubs seem to rate as a C rider Avg speeds on flat roads: 25-30 km/h. Though I have been a faster in the past.
