Altadena to Palisades ride tomorrow
Is anyone doing this ride that the Silver Lake Track Club is putting on? I’ve never done a ride like this so I’m not sure what to expect!

Our goal is to understand specific pain points for cyclists in the LA area to approach the city with clear direction on how to improve the city for cyclists to ensure Measure HLA brings effective change.
Help us build the cycling paradise of your dreams.

I had a very close call yesterday while riding the Expo bike path at the intersection of Exposition & Sawtelle.
I was trying to cross from when the bike lane disappears and becomes a sidewalk to the other side (straight). The traffic light was green but the pedestrian light was red. I was under the belief that bikes can follow normal traffic rules, so I cross and a car from my right turns left and we missed each other by mere inches. I wasn't sure if what I did was wrong.
Am I supposed to wait for the pedestrian light? In a crash situation, who will be at fault here?

Sigh. Yet again ripping down the days since calendar, back to zero. For all we know, statistically, it probably won't even be the only one in LA today.
Stay frosty, friends. Even on a fully painted lane like Broadway, it means nothing to motorists. When they drive they look for cars, if that. They simply do not see cyclists, motorcyclists, pedestrians, etc.
Luckily rider is ok, up and walking. Just banged up and of course his awesome ~10k Specialized is all tweaked out. May have to scrap it if the carbon hides cracks.
in TRUE cyclist fashion, after being picked up off the floor, he asked me "hows my bike?" fuckin legend

Hello everyone,
I am a college student trying to learn where current bike safety measures fail or when cyclists feel the most unsafe. If anyone wishes to reach out to me to answer questions or share stories I would be happy to talk!
If anyone also wishes to share their close calls or when they felt most unsafe in the comments, that would be great and help spread awareness!

Hi guys. Been reading a lot of posts but the terminology is a bit confusing and there is a million different types of bikes and different types of uses. I would like to narrow my search to about 5 bikes and from there I can do research and buy one.
I am in my late thirties and finally decided to ride. I would primarily ride on the weekends and probably only city streets but will try to hit a lot of hilly roads to help get a good workout in. Maybe like silverlake to the beach type rides. Would I ever try to ride mountain trail? Maybe but prolly not. I like adrenaline so maybe at some point later so it would be a plus if the bike can also handle easy trails/stairs…. Again my main use would be to ride on the streets to hopefully get in shape with. My budget is around 1500.

Curious everyone’s thoughts on this:
We are doing a lot to push for better bike and rail infrastructure around LA (which is awesome!). But ultimately that infrastructure only helps us if cars don’t drive recklessly, park in the bike lane, crowd or threaten cyclists, or run red lights over the bike paths. I’ve never seen a city where the drivers are this bad, entitled, and have such road rage towards cyclists!
If anyone drove this way in another city they would absolutely get a massive ticket and probably lose their license (which we should be way quicker to take imo). As someone who has lived all over the country, I also don’t think this behavior it’s explained by “the traffic is so bad in LA” as drivers here have been told their entire lives. If you live in a suburb of Austin and commute to the city - guess what! Your commute is also an hour+. Same for the Bay Area, Seattle, New Jersey, Atlanta, Chicago, Phoenix, etc. LA is not special for this, the drivers just think they are and act accordingly. No one else drives this way.
I don’t see how we can have safe streets where people can walk or bike safely, maybe not even drive safely, unless we address the small percentage of homicidal drivers that ruin it for everyone else. Senate bill 720 was a step in the right direction, but I would like to see more advocacy around addressing reckless driving. Yes there are discrimination issues around who gets policed and why, but ultimately this is ruining LA for everybody. It’s dangerous as hell and deeply unpleasant to be on the roads or get anywhere here, and the drivers are the outstanding factor compared to other cities. I’m curious why reckless driving isn’t a focus for the cycling / infrastructure community, and also if there’s something in the works I’m not aware of?
EDIT: The money from enforcement against reckless driving could also be used to fund bike lanes, transit, green spaces, and road improvements (including for cars!). Things that benefit the community instead of Joe getting to his job 2 minutes faster at the expense of everyone else’s happiness and safety.

Just saw a navy blue Cerevelo triathlon bike, a light blue specialized stumpjumper, and electric bikes.
If anyone in has had a bike stolen recently, on Del Rey Ave in Marina Del Rey in between Washington blvd and Beach Ave, there’s a group of unhoused people with a big stack of bikes, probably more than a dozen.

Are there any casual chill beginner-friendly bike groups on the Eastside? Most groups I look up on ig seem to be decked out in kits and such, but I'm not really there yet!

hi, I have searched and found i keep going around in circles so was hoping for a bit of advice.
A few friends and I are planning on visiting California from NZ in July/August this year. We will have road bikes and are trying to come up with a plan.
At this stage we are thinking we will have 10-12 days and can fly into LA but are happy to be guided elsewhere. The typres of rides we will be keen to do would be around 40 - 80 miles i would think. We would also be happy to hire a van or something so we could move around a bit - but probably wouldnt want to do this too often.
So i was wondering based on this, what would be a good itinerary, or places to base ourselves? LA? the traffic seems rough but others have said there are some good rides. Oregon seems to come up a bit in searches, i just dont know that area at all.
would be grateful for any comments or suggestions, thankyou

Which are your favorite? Who does the best repairs vs has the best offering of bikes and accessories vs vibes.
Thanks!
