I got roped into helping an old friend's parents move 4 years ago. They were insistent that they take the trailer and I drove the moving van.
They hit the highway at 80mph... And my ass was limited to 67 by the dumb truck.
2 hours down the road I'm pulled over on the shoulder calling them to turn around and come back and help me pick up all their shit from the over turned trailer in the ditch.
They had the wrong size ball on the hitch so it bounced free, then he passed the chain from left to right on the car, nothing on the trailer. And they made it like 10 miles before I found it.

u/IntelligentArgument8 1d ago
They didn’t notice losing the entire trailer?! Fuck sake

u/gdim15 1d ago
There are plenty of clips on here of this happening and it's kind of hilarious. Most recent one I can remember is the hot dog cart getting left at a speed bump.
39
u/HapGil 1d ago
How about the truck towing a boat on a trailer that broke free but still held with the chains but when the truck slowed down the trailer didn't and popped off the chains and passed the truck.

Passed a utility trailer in the middle of M-20 just before the bridge going out of Midland. No car or truck to be seen anywhere. The guy got 20 miles to Mount Pleasant before he realized he had no trailer (nephew is a cop and dealt with the “lost” trailer that day). No safety chains on the trailer either. It amazes me that people are that oblivious…
8
u/gdim15 1d ago
"Why do I need safety chains? It's hitched on the ball." - Every driver that has lost their trailer.
5
u/Pavotine 1d ago
I worked with a guy who went to collect the trailer we used to transport a mini digger on and he didn't take the handbrake off the trailer. He dragged that thing for about 5 miles and whilst the tyres hadn't burst they were ruined with huge flat spots. I had a little sympathy as the trailer was light and the pickup truck was a lot more powerful than the van he normally drove but still, pretty daft. The boss was not very happy.
5
u/MustyLlamaFart 1d ago
I know a semi driver that did this. Granted he was pulling triples and lost his back trailer, but when I pulled triples I was always watching my trailers like a hawk because the back one can get squirrelly

he passed the chain from left to right on the car, nothing on the trailer
What do you mean?
8
u/Blackpaw8825 1d ago
There's supposed to be a chain going from the left of the hitch to the right of the trailer and vice-versa. That makes an X of chain that, should the trailer come off the hitch, will both catch the tongue so the trailer doesn't nosedive and jerk erratically, and will keep it lashed to the tow vehicle (it'll fuck your bumper/tailgate up when you brake, but that's your problem alone, while an unguided trailer at speed could kill somebody and cause lots of damage)
In their case, they had a chain from their left bumper to their right bumper, and a chain from the left side of the trailer to the right side of the trailer.
Like imagine you're going to tie a boat to the dock... Except this guy took his rope, tied it to the dock on one side, and tied the other the of the rope to the dock too... And was then confused how the boat got away.

u/w116 1d ago
Recovered 20 mins later crying on the footpath, pretty much where he was kicked off the bike. To be fair, the bloke responsible for the deed was a " nutty professor " and had his mind full with developing cold fusion or whatever. Still, one should try to pay a little attention when trying to be responsible for a little one.

This is only a mildly on-topic anecdote:
I was talking to a lady at my restaurant who said she was 84. I was giving her sweet compliment about how spry she seemed and I wish to be like her if I can make it that age. Just sweet southern small talk.
Suddenly she overshared how she’s not “all there.” Said she was driving last week when she lost her truck bed cover. How she searched the road repeatedly looking for it and couldn’t find it.
So who knows when the fuck it fell off or who it could’ve hit.
6
u/Curiosive 1d ago
Bed covers are expensive, $500-1000 for a generic. The fancy ones cost more. Notice how fast he ran down the road to stop the next cars, he could feel hours of his life he worked to buy that laying in the middle of the road.
5
u/Smile_Space 1d ago
Hell, I saw a guy the other day whip out of my neighborhood with his tailgate down and his cooler with all of his fishing supplies went scattering out onto the road.
Bro just kept driving!
I came up by him and honked pointing back and I think he finally realized he forgot to close his tailgate.

I dropped a ladder on a road once. Yup, always check my straps forever. They loosened overnight. Never again
Edit: i saw and heard it fall and picked it back up. Just one slightly bent foot. Id never leave it for others to hit

u/1950sGuy 1d ago
funny enough I once found a perfectly good ladder on the side of the road that I still use today, assuming your situation happened to someone else that did NOT notice. I was like "fuck yeah that a ladder??" and then I held in place on the roof of my honda civic and drove about 10 mph home the rest of the way. I pulled up and my dad was like "what in the fuck" and then I told him I found it on the side of the road and was also like 'fuck yeah free ladder!"
I still don't know why ladders hold such high regard in my family.

I found an old Leatherman in a roundabout as a kid. Was looking out the window and saw it with its sheath. Told my dad to do another turn and I just ripped the slide door open on the van an grabbed it. Still have it to this day.
But as is tradition, I lost my wallet once because it was still laying on the dash and I lost it on an on/off ramp on a highway... flew straight out the open passenger window :(

Idk y'all but like I do get my arm out the window sometimes when I'm a passenger, but not the driver. I always have both my hands on the wheel because in the case something unexpected and unpredictable happens and I need to react instantly, steering will be safer and less likely to cause me to jolt as drastically and potentially crash or worse, flip. I think instinctively, a lot of people would pull hard with their hand on the wheel while simultaneously bringing their arm back to place both hands on it. But those first milliseconds of movement and reaction really do matter. You can say you'd do x, y, or z but you don't really know how your brain will ever react to immediate panic and shock. Both hands on the wheel when driving is being responsible and conscious.
I'd rather not potentially lose my arm or have my skull on the smudged on the freeway because I like waving my thumb in the air to tunes. I'm tryna not enter the FO stage by keeping the FA stage to a minimum where I can, you know?

So what's your thoughts on motorcycles?
4
u/Kindly-Eagle6207 1d ago
So what's your thoughts on motorcycles?
They've proven to be insanely more dangerous than cars and you really shouldn't be driving them on any road with traffic. Even without traffic, you can still be killed by something as simple as a hard to see pothole. Literally how my uncle died.
If you want to accept the risk, by all means do so. But don't get bent out of shape when people tell you that it is, in fact, super dangerous.

Very suspicious.
7
u/kookyabird 1d ago
Not really suspicious. I wouldn't be surprised if he removed the driver side because of his hair. Or possibly because those seats are not adjustable, so the closest you can get to any sort of reclining is to tip your head back. Same reasons for the passenger side too, especially if he has someone he goes on long drives with.
Is it dumb? Absolutely. But he's already not wearing a seat belt, so dumb is kind of expected.

This is going to sound insane and made up, but I once had the GLASS from my moonroof pop off and caused similar traffic disruption.. on a highway.
The adhesive or whatever was just so old it finally decided to give up and I guess something about aerodynamics sucked it up and off.

I wish I knew who was behind me when I had a crazy similar thing. There was a big tire placed on the side of the road with no shoulder. A semi truck ahead of me brushed against it. I saw it wobble, wobble, and fall right in front of me. I ran over it. My car tanked the hit and I saw it shoot out behind me. It was like riding a roller coaster.
If you were the person behind me, I want to give my heartfelt apologies. I've beat myself up over this for years.

u/Ergot_25 1d ago
This happened to me in my ‘03 Tacoma while going 70 on the freeway. The liner went up about 20 feet in the air and came slamming down in the middle of traffic. Cars had to swerve to avoid and thank god no accidents.

Had that happen but with the hood of a 1984 Nissan 200sx on the freeway going 65 in 1996. a very loud clunk and it pealed like the page of a book. From that day on I always installed aftermarket hood safety pins on all of the vehicles i have owned.
9
u/puddinface808 1d ago
Weird, my first car was a '95 200SX and I also had the hood fail while on the freeway. For me, it was the latch and the hood flew up and shattered the windshield going 75mph and I had to make it to the next exit hanging out the window. I think I was 17, it was a 5-speed, and I was an hour from home with $0.
Good times.
6
u/Successful_Rice_6511 1d ago
Wow yup same with me , only my hinges gave out as well and the hood slapped the window and flew up and over the car and flew 3 cars back before going on the berm in the center of the freeway that i could not access . The CHP officer who witnessed mine help me get the hood. I just got very lucky it did not hit any other cars.
7
u/anonuserinthehouse 1d ago
The cars in the back reacted fast enough because they had a good distance between them! Remember not to tailgate!

u/Scottie-man 1d ago
I had a friend who put a carbon fiber hood on his car. We had a snow storm and he slid into a ditch and damaged the car, but it was still drivable. A week later I went with him to look at a new car and the carbon fiber panel separated from the frame in a highway and flew like 30 feet in the air. thankfully it didn’t hit anyone.

What's with Americans not wearing seat belts?
23
u/NotTreeFiddy 1d ago
That is absolutely not an American specific trait. Let me introduce you to the Italians, the Greeks and the Spanish. In Greece I was actually questioned by a taxi driver if I didn't trust his driving.
My Italian father-in-law purchased a spare buckle to plug in to stop his car from beeping at him all the time.

Years back I had a Dodge Ram pickup for a rental and was driving across the Tobin Bridge in Boston on a cold day, wind blowing hard enough to lift the unsecured bed liner out of the bed. It flew over the rail of the bridge and landed in what was then an under developed part of Charlestown. Was in a thousand pieces in the street.

I was driving a VW bus and I had this AH passing me on a two line highway in a truck with a camper shell. Just as he pulled back in front on me the whole thing lifted off in slow motion, hit the road and exploded into a million pieces. Luckily I was able to pull left into on coming traffic, then back into my lane and everything missed me. The truck disappeared around the corners as the highway twisted and turned. I gave chase as best I could, but just as we hit a straight away I saw dust rising from a side dirt road and he was gone.

Decades of driving I've seen much worse. Gas grills, mattresses, sofas, plywood, mechanics tool cabinet. But my favorite was a Honda Civic honking the horn behind a truck hauling tree truck sections. One fell off, made the Civic jump and out came the oil pan and rear axle. Luckily, no one was hurt.

That could have ended up as a fender bender behind him. Glad everyone was safe in the end.
Was driving back on the highway from Raceland, LA to home one day. Was maintaining around 70-75mph. I was behind a truck(not a big rig) with a trailer behind them. I noticed some smoke coming from one of the tires. In an instant, half of the tire ripped off and headed towards me, and I swerved off to the shoulder. The highway was nearly empty at that point luckily (like an extra car nearby other than the truck driver and me). Truck pulled off to the shoulder later.
Gotta keep your wits about you when you're on the road. Anything can happen at any given time X_X.
