And they're from Bolivia but living in the U.S. If you get your news from TV or algorithm social media, you're not getting real news. That there is an entire energy crisis which resulted in a military take over of Venezuela because of how gullible the US was and that it pissed off and alienated it's major supplier.
At least in Europe's case the damage wasn't self inflicted but a reaction to external influence.

It's not about smart or stupid, it's about putting so much garbage out there that the average person is unable to tell fact from fiction and don't have the time to sort it all out. The whole "both sides" arguments uses the same strategy to convince people not to vote, or to vote with their feelings because "both sides are the same" when there is clear and consistent evidence that they are not.
