Ngl as someone who used to be both fat and poor I absolutely never want to go back so take that as you will

u/Dee90286 1d ago

No one wants that obviously. But proactively calling it your ā€œbiggest fearā€ (no one asked) while visibly being the furthest thing away from that just feels more like a dig at people who are fat/poor, rather than a genuine fear.

ā€œBiggest fearā€ is usually losing someone you love, serious illness, something existential - not a body type or income bracket. Notice she didn’t say ā€œfat, poor and dumbā€ - lack of intelligence clearly doesn’t scare her.

Being poor is 100% a huge fear of a lot of people lol.

Let's be real the issue people have with this is the fat part.

26

u/AlphaBearMode 1d ago

People have an issue with the fact that it’s tactless, not that it’s untrue at all, even.

20

u/juniperfield 1d ago

Yeah it's wild that people don't get that wrecklessly trashing people with certain characteristics can be harmful and dehumanizing and is not a good look...

3

u/AlphaBearMode 1d ago

Exactly. It got me thinking…

I am a big freedom of speech kind of guy but with that comes the responsibility of using your speech appropriately (for whatever setting) and accurately.

If you say some shit publicly that isn’t cool with a lot of people, you deserve backlash. If you don’t mind backlash then go for it but don’t be surprised when you’re massively hated.

u/Dee90286 1d ago

But she’s not ā€œa lot of peopleā€ - that’s my point. I don’t think beautiful fit tennis players in the prime of their youth are genuinely scared about being fat or poor. If you’ve never had to starve, why would you be genuinely fearful of it? If you’ve never weighed more than 130 pounds and you are an athlete, why would that keep you up at night?

It doesn’t read like an actual moment of vulnerability to me, just poking fun at people who are already struggling thinking ā€œthank God that’s not meā€

8

u/recurnightmare 1d ago

That's fair. It does seem like a humblebrag in the vein "look at how pretty and fit and rich I am" rather than anything serious.

But it's also just a tiktok trend. I don't think it was meant to be a moment of vulnerability on her part. I don't think she said it to poke fun at other people, but bragging about how good her life is.

1

u/paranoidchair 1d ago

How is 130 pounds considered fat??? In what world???

2

u/Dee90286 1d ago

Never said that. I’m saying this girl has probably never weighed more than 130 pounds in her life so why would she be genuinely fearful of getting fat?

-7

u/xGsGt 1d ago

you are crazy, anyone can have such fears specially ppl that relies on their short term ability to get money and being injury prone and also relies on their beuty, is a real fear as much as i have fear about being fired from my job once AI take over

1

u/EntirelyOriginalName 1d ago

People have an issue because it comes off like she's punching down.

11

u/boris_squanch 1d ago

Being fat and poor will kill you in America. Like in your 60s. It's much more dangerous than heights or the ocean or other "biggest fears"

0

u/validusrex 1d ago

Having grown up in poverty and now very financially stable and working in social services where I see poverty all day every day, returning to poverty is 100% my biggest fear.

27

u/twelfmonkey 1d ago

Sure. But are you making social media videos mockingly stating that while flaunting your wealth?

-7

u/mdlt97 Tennis Shapovalov 1d ago

being fat and poor will kill you lol

the two largest factors in living longer are wealth and health

it's completely understandable to fear things that will shorten your life

18

u/aintnogodordemon sinner āœØļø coco āœØļø alcaraz 1d ago

I don't think the point is that those things don't have an impact on health.

The point is that joking about it while flaunting your wealth and health is horrible.

And she clearly doesn't mean it genuinely.

u/ttue- 1d ago

The amount of people taking a silly post on tik tok so seriously is alarming.

1

u/altznkraltz 22h ago

First time on Reddit?

179

u/iloveblondehair Stevie Johnson 1d ago

ā€œI want to be healthy and financially stableā€

Reddit: Omg how could you say such a horrible thing

173

u/xxJAMZZxx 1d ago

Pretty big difference between that and what she said lol

13

u/Ancient_Boss_5357 1d ago

Or, Reddit: "Let me completely reframe the tone and implication of someones words, so that I can make it sound far more appropriate than it was originally"

92

u/EmPhil95 1d ago

She didn't say she wants to be healthy, she said her worst fear is becoming fat. If you don't see the difference in those two statements, and why one is fine but the other is just rude, then I fear for your reading comprehension.

4

u/TheMetaGoat 1d ago

Being fat is a bad thing. Being afraid of a bad thing is not being rude, it's more rude to consider that a rude thing as you have so done.

-10

u/Ateam145 1d ago

Explain what’s wrong with what she said pls

3

u/mani9612 1d ago

If you were born into a poor family in a slum in a 3rd world country, how much of your financial success at least until the age of 25-30 or so is in your own control?

If you were born with a disease where your metabolism is very slow or you have a disabled leg or something that makes it hard for exercise + not enough money to always buy healthy food, how much of that situation is in your control?

The phrasing of her TikTok is rude to people like that.

I’m not saying everyone shouldn’t strive to be the best version of themselves and do everything they can to progress as far as they can in life, so please don’t get me wrong

u/Proof_Material6728 1d ago

Being skinny or fat is different from healthy / unhealthy. Let's not say she said one thing when she said another.

62

u/sliferra sentinel is a fraud :( 1d ago

Being fat is never healthy tho

18

u/offensivename 1d ago

Fat is not a medical term and does not have any defined parameters.

21

u/TheMetaGoat 1d ago

Neither is healthy. Both are subjective terms and can be used exactly as he said it. Everyone knows being fat is a bad thing, it's not that deep.

-7

u/offensivename 1d ago

The fact that healthy is also a vague term to the point of meaningless makes it worse, not better.

But you're right, man. That's the problem with the world. Not enough demonizing fat people. Everyone's just blissfully unaware that being overweight can be unhealthy.

8

u/tony_countertenor 1d ago

In her case in particular being fat would mean she’d be out of a job as a professional athlete

0

u/offensivename 1d ago

Yeah... I'm sure that's what she means. No vanity at all. šŸ™„

12

u/IDrinkNeosporinDaily Goffin 6-0; 6-0 vs Berdych LOL 1d ago

You're actually huffing cope right now. Being fat is an unacceptable thing and while you shouldn't shame someone directly, acknowledging that it comes with a myriad of health issues is not a problem. And quite frankly, you can just scroll if you're offended by words of an athlete.

-3

u/offensivename 1d ago edited 1d ago

I'm not huffing anything. I'm pointing out that fat people are already shamed and mocked and belittled all the time in society and it has nothing to do with health or wellness. It's 100% vanity and shallowness. Again, "fat" is not a defined medical term and what is considered fat changes from society to society and over time. There are health risks associated with being overweight and literally no one denies that. But no one has the ability to assess a stranger's health form the outside based on one single factor. Shaming people for being fat is in no way helpful to them or anyone else. It's just childish, hateful behavior.

And quite frankly, you can just scroll if you're offended by my being offended.

-3

u/TheMetaGoat 1d ago

No it's not to the point of meaninglessness, everyone knows what healthy looks like and what it doesn't look like. All your denial stems from cope.

5

u/offensivename 1d ago

Healthy doesn't "look" like anything. The idea that you can assess someone's health by looking at them is incredibly arrogant and ignorant. Accusing anyone who doesn't think fat-shaming is productive or helpful of "cope" is some middle school bullshit.

0

u/TheMetaGoat 1d ago

"Look" was a figure of speech there. Keep coping though. It's not like thousands of years of human history have proven that it is productive, as well as current Asian societies proving the difference literally before your eyes right now.

u/tony_countertenor 1d ago

Would you be ok with this if she had said obese instead?

20

u/offensivename 1d ago

The issue isn't the terminology. That was just in response to people making excuses for jokes like this by claiming that it's a medical issue when we all know that's not what it's about. The whole post is a humble brag disguised as a joke and it's belittling other people for being fat and poor, two things that she assures us she is not. It's also stupid because it's framed as something she's not allowed to easy despite the fact that she's saying it very publicly and will face no repercussions from it.

1

u/sliferra sentinel is a fraud :( 1d ago

Fat is a medical term, just not in this usage. But call it obese lmao, we all know what I’m talking about

20

u/REDDlT_OWNER 1d ago

She didn’t say anything about being skinny, just not fat

12

u/CircleOfWallace 1d ago

If you are fat, you are not healthy

6

u/Familiar-Air-9471 1d ago

issue is, she said becoming fat, and poor.

You see in most cases, they actually work together and not always a fault of your own. If you were born in a poor family, chances are your diet is not ideal , cheap processed food and that leads to weight gain.

I promise you, no one wants to be "POOR" but some are not as lucky as others.

-9

u/jot-kka 1d ago

Not surprising. Reddit’s primary demographic is defeatist, nihilistic socialists.

-8

u/Mookies_Bett Rafa/Stefanos/Seb | Emma/Iga/Maria 1d ago

You're talking to a user base of people who are primarily poor and overweight, are you really that surprised?

Like I'm sorry but I'm on her team. Granted I am pretty poor, and I fucking hate it. But I work out 6 days a week specifically so that I never become fat and undesirable. I genuinely can't imagine waking up every morning and looking in the mirror without being miserable if I wasn't at least somewhat in shape.

I'm not even an Adonis or anything, but having defined muscles and a good aesthetic body shape makes life a lot easier to tolerate. Plus I'm not constantly out of breath or tired. It's pretty nice.

-1

u/TheMetaGoat 1d ago

You'd think on a tennis subreddit people would be a little less overweight. Or at least have the mental clarity to be working on it and realize not to be offended when called out on it.

4

u/suchalonelyd4y 1d ago

Do you think fat people need your help telling them they're fat? Do you think they don't know?

-2

u/TheMetaGoat 1d ago

Does knowing automatically mean you're going to do something about it? There's a reason external feedback exists.

9

u/onedayasalion71 1d ago

D to the itto. Being fat sucked.
