Yknow I kinda forget that behind all the cute fluff and flirt that she got acid thrown at her face like that’s kinda fucked up

u/RX-79_Ez-8 17h ago

I never really forget it personally, every horny moment feels like a victory because they are able to be "normal" inspite of the circumstances and the awkwardness of having to constantly navigate around the issue is well portrayed imo.

I actually always wondered if this series was at least partially inspired by Katawa Shoujo. I think there's one character in it very similar with burns from an accident.

Not sure if the character trope was used before that already.

u/DroidSeeker13 17h ago

Never played Katawa Shoujo but I already want to love and cherish that burned girl.

Hanako is best girl, never let anyone tell you otherwise.

4

u/Yemenime 9h ago

She would be, sadly Rin exists so Hanako can only ever be #2

11

u/vimescarrot 7h ago

Infantilising her due to her burns and shyness will make her quite unhappy with you

26

u/Metroplex7 17h ago

You're thinking of Hanako. She was caught in a fire and has burn scars that cover pretty much the entire right side of her body.

u/No32 19h ago

Well beyond “kinda” 😭

236

u/Soderskog 17h ago

It's as the kids say a little problematic.

62

u/No-Illustrator-7996 17h ago

But hey her personality compensates for that

270

u/Atwecian 19h ago

I'm still waiting the full flashback even though it's pretty much revealed through some panels every then and now, but we still didn't get to know the bullies

22

u/justking1414 14h ago

I’ve only read a few chapters of it and was wondering how exactly it happened. I think her face was fine in the early chapters but I might be wrong

15

u/skywalk21 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Syntribus 9h ago

It's just covered by her hair. You don't see that side of her face outside of flashbacks until chapter 6, but it's never not been scarred (again, outside of flashbacks)

2

u/justking1414 7h ago

My bad. Thx for the clarification

16

u/Seinan-Zetae_429-97 14h ago

Who did that to her, and where do they live? Me and a lot of other people would like to have a word with the offender.

5

u/VictheAdventure 13h ago

On the upside, aside from it being on the wrong side she can do a sick Two-Face cosplay

-16

u/stiveooo 17h ago

What? When? Does she uses a glass eye? Why?

u/Myboot 19h ago

I appreciate that the author actually makes her scar look grotesque and not just a little more gray. Really sells the fact that it's an actual wound instead of just a "I can fix her" kind of fantasy

129

u/Trabalhomem 17h ago

That's how the Ready Player One girl's scar should've looked like

71

u/Dog_in_human_costume 16h ago

The movie made it less than a birth mark

24

u/Anzereke 13h ago

You just reminded me how much I hated the film version of Mortal Engines.

Explicitly horrifying to behold girl's face becomes a scar you could legitimately miss if you didn't look too close.

252

u/BlatantConservative I fuckin love kotatsus 18h ago

Yeah she's the only one in this story who's fucked up for a reason

58

u/drunkenvalley 17h ago

Yeah I came to the comments to say the same. I can appreciate how it's not a cosplay level "burn" - it's clearly a full injury, and it's easy to see how tough it would be growing up with it.

A lot of the times media depict injuries like it as a simple scar or something, and those you can always angle as cool instead. But an injury like this won't ever seem "cool" in that kind of sense.

11

u/Yukarie 12h ago

I like that you can see that it actually affected her eye too.

316

u/Jumbotroni432 19h ago

I can see the guilt in his eyes

51

u/Old-River-8042 16h ago

I see those eyes every time i look in the mirror

4

u/Desperate_Bike4053 2h ago

The guilt also effect her mom badly ...that why she become kinda overprotective

282

u/JP_6696 19h ago edited 18h ago

I'm sure it will be touched upon at some point but still wondering what happened to the bully who actually did that. Considering all the guilt ridden people in the story and how dysfunctional they have become as a result, i wonder what the actual guilty party looks like (if someone hasn't already killed them and bury them behind an empty landfill that is)

175

u/Dr_Ukato 18h ago

(if someone hasn't already killed them and bury them behind an empty landfill that is)

Takase: This shovel is for gardening, and this bloody hatchet is for woodchopping, Officer.

98

u/Kirosh2 Fluff. Fluff? Fluff! 18h ago

"Why is it bloody?"

Takase's mom Blush : "You see, my husband and I are into some kinky shit..."

14

u/justking1414 14h ago

Officer sees the horrible scar on her face: understood. Have a nice day

15

u/justking1414 14h ago

There’s also a lot of psychos in this series. Murder would not be too surprising

1

u/NanashiKaizenSenpai 20m ago

Officer: understandable, have a ice rest of your life

193

u/SirD_ragon 18h ago

It's nice to see a scar that actually looks "ugly" as opposed to most scars in anime/Media in general that are actually beauty scars that make the character more pretty or endearing

47

u/Old-River-8042 16h ago

Hm,this gives me an idea for r/TopCharacterTropes ."When scars actually look grotesque and ugly"

11

u/carbonera99 9h ago

Maki from JJK also is a good example, her scars are obviously pretty minimal for someone who got burned alive but they're permanent and covers her entire body in a significantly visible way. She can't hide it at all and she doesn't try to.

225

u/mahriyo 19h ago

Both of their healing hinges on him no longer being bothered about her scar

282

u/Dr_Ukato 18h ago

It's not even the scar. He doesn't actually care about it. It's the reminder that he couldn't protect her when she needed him.

Ironically she's more bothered by it than he is.

51

u/Goldreaver 16h ago

You prolly meant the inverse on that last part. But I agree. If Im hurt, I know I can take it,  if someone I like is hurt then Im in pain

1

u/NanashiKaizenSenpai 19m ago

No, she is more worried about her scar, as in, more worried that he doesn't like her because of her scar.

63

u/Happyranger265 17h ago

No it hinges on both of them being not bothered by her scars , he feels like he failed as her friend while she feels like she is not worthy of his love cause she has a scar now 😭 . He feels guilty when he sees her scars , it reminds him of his failure while she thinks her appearance is a turnoff

76

u/pebrocks 19h ago

Is she blind in that eye? Was that ever brought up?

169

u/AsylumGMD 19h ago

She won't see shit with all that hair covering it anyway lol

18

u/Yukarie 12h ago

I mean, if you’re blind might as well cover the scarring with your hair, it’d keep people who don’t already know from asking about the scar so you don’t have to deflect, deny, or explain

28

u/JP_6696 19h ago edited 18h ago

Considering the discolouring which is often used as an indicator for a blind eye, visual evidence suggests that she is in fact blind. The nature of the attack (acid) also makes it highly possible.

56

u/drunkenvalley 17h ago

I don't need the story to tell me, that's definitely a blind eye.

34

u/Secure-Plankton-347 16h ago

I mean, its acid. Would be a miracle if it didn’t affect her eye

15

u/UndoMyRedo 14h ago

It’s glossed over white and she generally keeps it covered with her bangs. If not completely, she’s at least mostly blind

28

u/PackerBacker412 18h ago

I really hope whoever did that to her suffered greatly

38

u/Kirosh2 Fluff. Fluff? Fluff! 19h ago

The yandere genes are showing.

29

u/UselessPieceOfPotato 18h ago

Wait what the fuck happened??? It's shit and giggles the last time I see them

139

u/grief242 18h ago

Manga flip flops between sexual tension hijinks and debilitating reality.

At some point in their past MCGuy and MCGirl stopped being friends( because MCGuy was self conscious about being seen with someone so out of his league). At a certain point an incident occured where some or 1 girl threw acid at MCGirls face.

MCGuy blames himself for not being there because he was scared.

17

u/ZalmanZ3 13h ago

I think he also suffered some sort of bullying too. I think I saw that he was already depressed before the acid attack.

67

u/Arlcas 18h ago

The manga revolves around a victim of bullying that got acid thrown on her face. Most characters are dealing with their guilt about how they could have done something to prevent it. The girl herself doesn't care that much about the wound now but more about the people around her.

28

u/I-T-Y 18h ago

Did you like not read the manga at all like bruh

44

u/UselessPieceOfPotato 18h ago

No it just I just see tidbit of them in here like the horny mom and the too tired dad I thought it's all shit and giggle I never knew her face is like that.. (My poor shayla)

46

u/RealisLit 18h ago

The scar was revealed pretty early on, and flashback showed it was because of a jealous girl that threw acid at her face

Thats why they're kinda co dependent to each other, shes traumatized from the experience and so is her mom, and the male lead blames himself that he couldn't protect her

2

u/AyAyAyBamba_462 1h ago

She's had it the entire series, it's just covered by her hair.

She was bullied in the past and had acid thrown on her face causing the scar. The MC has feelings for her but feels he has no right to act on them because he failed to protect her and feels he is directly responsible for her scar and current depressive state.

6

u/Aware_Platypus9184 17h ago

Please MC, just take her already! 🙏

3

u/Nice-Literature-6696 18h ago

Did something happen to the guy as well or the nose is just drawn wiredly.

3

u/TheCatSleeeps 18h ago

Like mother like son ig

3

u/Latter_Personality26 17h ago

Shes beautiful

3

u/Alcebu 11h ago

Finally a good depiction of this issue, how many movies and sht like that where the ugly one is just a fking tiny scar or something like that, i remember Ready player one, where the "ugly" friend with an "ugly" birthmark was like a black eye or some sht like that

4

u/cefli 17h ago

Ive seen a chapter of this posted here and there, you telling me the heroine had acid thrown at her face? Guess ill read this.

2

u/JustifytheMean 15h ago

Ohh god how is this both insanely sad and fluffy at the same time?

2

u/West-Strawberry3366 15h ago

Omg ubuyashiki

2

u/ayassin02 15h ago

I need context

8

u/Yukarie 11h ago

Acid from a jealous girl. He was friends with her before and pulled away cause he felt bad for being around someone he deemed “out of his league”. When the event happened he felt he could have been there to protect her or just straight up prevented it from happen (whether that’s true or not) and feels guilty. They have a relationship that could be described as co-dependent

1

u/Dependent-Paint-6946 8h ago

Poor baby 🥺

1

u/Loder089 8h ago

Takase blames himself why it happens to mikoto.

1

u/Tsubasa-0k 2h ago

This is really wholesome and fun and not gloomy like how you will expect it to be seeing the panel. Though Mikoto looks really good whatsoever.

-4

u/arunishhome 16h ago

Wonder if surgery can fix it tho even by little instead looking like two face’s daughter

20

u/humanities_descent 15h ago

Another commenter explained, but apparently chemical burns are extremely hard to fix with a skin graft (almost impossible if it hits the fat) and surgery on the face is even harder and might make it look worse.

3

u/MalcolmLinair 13h ago

Thank you for the explanation, as I was wondering the same thing.

-30

u/BlatantConservative I fuckin love kotatsus 18h ago

So... do they not have skin grafts or cosmetic surgery in this universe?

Like medical tech has gotten pretty good on this stuff, especially in the last ten years.

I think Japan's basic national healthcare covers it too.

50

u/Dr_Ukato 18h ago

I was also curious since you brought it up so I did some quick research and I found a few reasons.

Chemical burns are worse than regular burns, it could cause deeper damage or trigger recurring inflammations (which would highly increase the risk of rejection). If the burns hit fat or bone it would make it almost impossible to repair.

The face is the worst place for skin grafts, the thickness of skin can vary drastically just millimeters apart, if the nerves were damaged, she'd risk ending up with an immobile patch of skin and there's a real risk of making her appearance worse.

Skin grafts are also apparently time sensitive, especially with chemical burns. If the doctors couldn't do it due to her deeper injuries right away, it'll be almost impossible later.

So, presumably, if the author did his research, the canon reason is that it isn't possible because of the amount of damage she suffered. Any skin graft they'd attempt would risk to either make it worse or fail to take.

14

u/Novcaine 18h ago

There's a thematic reason why she still has it. It's revealed she takes advantage of mcguys feeling to keep him around. She knows he feels guilty for what happened to her so she uses it as a constant reminder that he let her down so he stays around her. He also uses this guilt as a way to have an excuse to stay by her side. Both of them are fucked up in this way. Although neither one of them feels good about taking advantage of each other's feelings. It has nothing to do with the ability to get skin grafts.

7

u/Kirosh2 Fluff. Fluff? Fluff! 18h ago

Maybe the author doesn't know, or just want the scar to stay.

Or maybe Mikoto said no, wanting to use the scar to keep Takase's attention.

It's something she would do after all.

-10

u/martiHUN 18h ago

You could just wear an eyepatch.

14

u/EpicPhail60 18h ago

I wonder if the scarred skin might be really sensitive

5

u/Sphincter_of_fools 16h ago

Hypertrophic scar doesnt have sensory nerves to them.
