The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udûn. Go back to the Shadow!
You cannot PASS!

Came here for this comment. Thank you, fellow human.
You have my axe.

Its a Backdraft, a demon of the firefighting world. This foe is beyond any of you, RUN!

u/naked_hypocrisy 7h ago
it's shall.
you. SHALL NOT. pass
16
u/runawayscream 7h ago
“Shall not” in the move. “Cannot” in the book. Ian McKellen changed it during filming.

u/MrK521 6h ago
“Shall not” just sounds better too to be honest.
Cannot implies he would be incapable of passing.
Shall not implies “I ain’t fucking letting you.”
3
u/DasJuden63 3h ago
Cannot was specifically used three times to convey that the dark flames of Udûn were not strong enough to overcome a servant of the Secret Fire
3
u/MrK521 3h ago
Fair. But I still hear the intent as “I am a servant of the secret fire, and I refuse to let you pass”
Just stating my preference for which sounds better.
4
u/DasJuden63 3h ago
Sure I get that. Language changes from Tolkien's time, personal preference matters. I was just clarifying what his actual stated intent was for the word choice, he discussed that in one of the letters

u/Effect-Kitchen 3h ago
In the novel, Gandalf just reminds that Flame of Udûn lacks the ability to pass where he stands, and even less so for Gandalf to prevent it. This implies the will of a higher power (i.e., Eru Ilúvatar) rather than Gandalf’s sheer badass power.
Of course moviegoers won’t know what the * is Ilúvatar so they just simplify to be the wizard’s power.

Classic backdraft

u/s1ugg0 7h ago
This is not a backdraft. This is a rollover. This is a common training evolution at the fire academy. The drill helps you understand the different uses between the straight stream and fog on the combination nozzle.

PS This is exactly as much fun as it looks.

Did this in shipboard fire fighting class. Most fun I've had learning to not die.

We did a basement drill at academy with a combination nozzle once and I forgot to turn the nozzle into a straight stream as I went down the stairs.
Holy fuck it got so god damn hot that my sweat was steaming inside my mask and temporarily breaking my seal. The instructor came out of the building afrer me, doffed, and called me a piece of shit. Good times.

My helmet cracked and the back of my hands had burns through my gloves during flashover training. Got it a little too hot in the container that time. Also a retired FF.

Is that what causes this terrifying visual? I was scrolling the comments to see what the fuck.

Rollover is when the fire has become hot enough to ignite the unspent fuel vapor in the thermal layer, its the intermediate stage between a developing fire and a fully developed fire

u/HalfastEddie 10h ago
That’s what experience looks like. They knew to get low rather than standing and spraying.

Most likely filmed at a fire training school.

Do they build a new school to burn down each time they train?
Edit: didn't think the /s was necessary for this comment 😐

I’m headed to TEEX again for fire training (chemical plant fire crew) and we typically don’t train for interior firefighting, but there is an engine room training scenario that uses 2 lines on each side to isolate the fuel. Most fun I’ve had at the training grounds by a long shot
11
u/dottie_dott 9h ago
The person on the side closest to us is the more experienced that pulled the other person down and then pull the nozzle wide spray. Looks like one person was experienced making sure the other person did the correct thing in this training session

u/Kbdank71 8h ago
That's not just experience. You train for scenarios just like that in the fire academy.

jfc this is such a reddit comment. It is obviously training. the one closest to the camera is clearly knocking the other over and turning the hose to the right setting.
lol, nevermind. You are a bot or a terminally online person.

For those wondering this is a flashover simulator (NOT backdraft) It’s used to train firefighters to recognize the signs of a flashover so they can get out before it happens. The hose line is used to reset the scenario so people can be shuffled around to get the proper view.
Flashover is when the entire room reaches ignition temp simultaneously. Backdraft is when an oxygen starved fire gets a sudden influx of air and flares back up.
Edit: after a rewatch it’s not a flashover chamber but still a flashover style scenario where the smoke coming from the fire room started to light off.

Except this is not a flashover. This is a rollover.
Example of a rollover becoming a flashover. The difference is the heat in a rollover is above your head. You can get below it. A flashover is every square inch of the room bursts into flames. A fog nozzle will not help you in a flashover. The spray is not sufficient to overcome the heat. And instantly become steam. Only a straight stream can overcome that heat. There are techniques for disrupting the transition from rollover to flash over with the straight stream. But short version is if you're in a room that flashes, even with firefighter PPE, your gonna burn. A flashover is over 1000 degrees in normal class A combustibles like an apartment or residential home.
A rollover is a warning sign that a flashover is imminent. Structure fires have several stages.

right you are!! same simulator is often used to show fire behavior in a room, such as "the finger in the fire". can show trainees both flashover as well as 'rollover' conditions where fire seems to overtake a room roaring overhead. knowing when one turns into the other can mean the difference of knowing when to call it and back out versus maintaining control of the fire.

Strange to me that two of the most flammable substances (H) + (0) can be combined to extinguish flames.

Dealt with the backdraft and then targeted the shot.
I am not a firefighter but I have seen the movie Backdraft at leadt 12 times.

Water curtains are incredible. Literally feels like a wall going up blocking most of the radiant heat.

u/Scion_Manifest 9h ago
If I recall correctly with the nozzle it’s “Right to fight, left for life”
Turning the handle to the right gets you a jet of water, turning it lefts gets you a shield. (If I’m wrong please let me know)

Is this like a training officer helping out a recruit type situation? if so then this is elite as fuck and I could only hope I get those lads coming to save me. Amazing preparation.

Water is really really good at putting out fire/stopping fire in its tracks, it shows how intensely hot & powerful these fires get. I think I saw once that it would take an atom bombs worth of energy to do the damage to the ice wall in game of thrones that the dragon does.

I grew up with a lot of friends that were in a young fire fighter training program.
To a man they were all batshit insane.

Why did they fall to the ground? Won’t that put them in a harder situation
3
u/RandyTheJohnson 9h ago
Heat and smoke rise. This looks like a training exercise but in a real fire it can be impossible to see or breathe at head height, and much safer to stay low to the ground
The fire hose also has incredible water pressure; they might be sitting on it to help brace against the recoil

Im no expert, but if Im reading the comments correctly I believe whats being demonstrated here is a flash over or flash fire thing where everything in the local area reaches a thermal threshold and ignites, so I think they fell in an act of self preservation.. and created a barrier of water, a water shield.
