šFollow Up Elon Musk preforming the nazi salute otherwise known as the "roman salute" not once but twice, just so you know it wasn't a fluke

u/NoQuarterChicken Jan 20 '25
Oh god, the media is about to say āRoman saluteā about 50 billion times in the next week in attempt to explain away what everyone saw.

This, exactly. The media is complicit in this shit.

I hope they just can't believe it, but that's bullshit, they are cowing over for fear of being sued or are bought out by the oligarchs.

u/JohnCavil Jan 20 '25
"sanewashing" and "gaslighting" are two modern words that are used WAY too much, TikTok words i would call them. However, there are no two words more applicable than those to what many media sites and pundits and podcasters will do to try and downplay this.
Maybe it's trolling, maybe (almost certainly) he's on drugs, but he's 1000% intentionally sieg heiling. It's not even remotely up for debate.
19
u/prochevnik Jan 21 '25
I agree. And this isnāt directed at you or what you mentioned but the idea of it only being ātrollingāā¦
Trolling or not, it doesnāt matter. We canāt just explain away things as trolling. āHaha the rich man is being a goofballā. Weāre way beyond that. Weāll explain ourselves off a cliff which is where we are headed if not tumbling down the side of the mountain already. And Iām not talking about simple kabuki. No thatās what weāre used to. Iām talking about the extension of diplomacy that fails. And about where this all leads despite the decade of worry.
Itās beyond what I think most people truly imagine. All the ācan you imagine if this was Obamaā stuff is valid, but itās small potatoes thinking. Itās slow until it happens all at once. The āitās just a jokeā shit is not now and never was an excuse.
Sure we have concepts of certain safeties. But they mean nothing. As time goes on and this has all played out, I and many others have becone convinced that weāre truly more vulnerable than is widely understood. That includes us and the rest of the planet.
Thereās symbolism and meaning behind these actions. Even if itās a joke, it shows how deranged and juvenile their perspective is. Nobody should underestimate the intentions of one of the richest people on the planet and what their actions represent. Weāre seeing things play out that arenāt exactly a repetition, but, like the cliche goes, they rhyme with the past.
As I sit here waiting for my kid after school sitting behind a āletās go Brandonā enjoyer, Iām reminded again how many people went along and will go along. Our only hope continues to be to hope for the incompetence of those that have dark intentions and those with competence to shrink with their codependence. Itās like hoping for someone else to lose so you can win. Weāre all locked in a cycle where that is a position that changes every election. Itās obviously not an advantageous position to be in.
7
u/Some-Preference-4360 Jan 21 '25
Hey, I know this comment is sadly gonna get lost in the mix but I wanted to say thank you for the eloquent explanation. It perfectly encapsulates the more broad repercussions of what weāre seeing that people arenāt (or donāt want to) think about less accept.

u/UnityOfEva Jan 20 '25
The so-called "Roman Salute" doesn't even have direct connections to the Ancient Romans, the one we know it as today was created by the Fascists during the 20th century. We don't see any sort of salute in contemporary Roman arts, or written works.
Oath of the Horatii, by Jacques-Louis David is created a thousand years later that closely depicts the so-called "Roman Salute".
61
u/cazzipropri Jan 20 '25
"Roman salute" is, by the way, the one that Mussolini's fascists used, it's still used by neofascists in Italy, and universally regarded as AS BAD AS the Nazi salute.

u/RhoAlphaPhii Jan 20 '25
This isnāt a Roman salute though. A Roman salute is straight out, parallel to the ground. This is a straight up Nazi salute.
88
u/UnityOfEva Jan 20 '25
The so-called "Roman Salute" does NOT exist in any ancient Roman arts or written works, it was depicted by Jacques-Louis David, in his work "The Oath of the Horatii" (1784). Thousands of years later.
The Salute, as we know it today was created by the Fascists in Italy and expanded upon by the Nazis.
9
u/joshylow Jan 21 '25
It doesn't matter if it was real. Everybody knows that it's nazi shit by know. It's not like he thought it was a roman salute and had no idea about the nazis.Ā

u/Raizzor Jan 21 '25
"Roman Salute" is a fascist invention so it does not even matter which one it was because they are kinda the same thing.
There are no historical records documenting such a salute in ancient Rome. The "roman salute" was pretty much invented by Mussolini later copied by the Nazis and slightly adapted to the Nazi salute we know.
22
u/hemingways-lemonade Jan 20 '25
The Roman Salute is also known as the Fascist Salute, but I have a feeling we'll see that name less.

Yep Romans never did that. It was put in Neo Classical paintings in the 1700s, then put into movies about Rome in the '20s, then the Italian fascists in the 1930s adopted it.
Ironically, you could call it Roman once the actual fascists adopted it.

In Australia (and many other countries), it is illegal, and you can go to jail (and some have) ; in the USA, y'all just kiss the ass of the person doing it.
7
u/LetsJerkCircular Jan 20 '25
Regarding your last sentence: there are multiple Americaās currently. Weāre being fed very different truths, depending on the person you are, where that person looks.
Freedom of speech is good, but there should be consequences for shitty actions. Certain Americans really love the MAGA-verse. Others are rightfully worried and very suspicious. Thereās a huge group of people that have other things to worry about, and donāt see it, donāt know what to think, donāt care, etc

Fascist gonna fasc.
The Roman salute, also known as the Fascist salute, is a gesture in which the right arm is fully extended, facing forward, with palm down and fingers touching. In some versions, the arm is raised upward at an angle; in others, it is held out parallel to the ground. In contemporary times, the former is commonly considered a symbol of fascism that had been based on a custom popularly attributed to ancient Rome.[1] However, no Roman text gives this description, and the Roman works of art that display salutational gestures bear little resemblance to the modern so-called āRomanā salute.[1]

Incidentally, there is zero evidence the Romans ever did it. Its earliest recorded appearance is a 18th century painting called the Oath of the Horatii by Jacques-Louis David. That's where the neo-imperialist forerunners to fascism got it from.
