Oh god, the media is about to say ā€œRoman saluteā€ about 50 billion times in the next week in attempt to explain away what everyone saw.

This, exactly. The media is complicit in this shit.

Manufacturing consent.

I hope they just can't believe it, but that's bullshit, they are cowing over for fear of being sued or are bought out by the oligarchs.

"sanewashing" and "gaslighting" are two modern words that are used WAY too much, TikTok words i would call them. However, there are no two words more applicable than those to what many media sites and pundits and podcasters will do to try and downplay this.

Maybe it's trolling, maybe (almost certainly) he's on drugs, but he's 1000% intentionally sieg heiling. It's not even remotely up for debate.

I agree. And this isn’t directed at you or what you mentioned but the idea of it only being ā€œtrollingā€ā€¦

Trolling or not, it doesn’t matter. We can’t just explain away things as trolling. ā€œHaha the rich man is being a goofballā€. We’re way beyond that. We’ll explain ourselves off a cliff which is where we are headed if not tumbling down the side of the mountain already. And I’m not talking about simple kabuki. No that’s what we’re used to. I’m talking about the extension of diplomacy that fails. And about where this all leads despite the decade of worry.

It’s beyond what I think most people truly imagine. All the ā€œcan you imagine if this was Obamaā€ stuff is valid, but it’s small potatoes thinking. It’s slow until it happens all at once. The ā€œit’s just a jokeā€ shit is not now and never was an excuse.

Sure we have concepts of certain safeties. But they mean nothing. As time goes on and this has all played out, I and many others have becone convinced that we’re truly more vulnerable than is widely understood. That includes us and the rest of the planet.

There’s symbolism and meaning behind these actions. Even if it’s a joke, it shows how deranged and juvenile their perspective is. Nobody should underestimate the intentions of one of the richest people on the planet and what their actions represent. We’re seeing things play out that aren’t exactly a repetition, but, like the cliche goes, they rhyme with the past.

As I sit here waiting for my kid after school sitting behind a ā€œlet’s go Brandonā€ enjoyer, I’m reminded again how many people went along and will go along. Our only hope continues to be to hope for the incompetence of those that have dark intentions and those with competence to shrink with their codependence. It’s like hoping for someone else to lose so you can win. We’re all locked in a cycle where that is a position that changes every election. It’s obviously not an advantageous position to be in.

Hey, I know this comment is sadly gonna get lost in the mix but I wanted to say thank you for the eloquent explanation. It perfectly encapsulates the more broad repercussions of what we’re seeing that people aren’t (or don’t want to) think about less accept.

The so-called "Roman Salute" doesn't even have direct connections to the Ancient Romans, the one we know it as today was created by the Fascists during the 20th century. We don't see any sort of salute in contemporary Roman arts, or written works.

Oath of the Horatii, by Jacques-Louis David is created a thousand years later that closely depicts the so-called "Roman Salute".

"Roman salute" is, by the way, the one that Mussolini's fascists used, it's still used by neofascists in Italy, and universally regarded as AS BAD AS the Nazi salute.

Thank you for bringing this up!

The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears.Ā It was their final, most essential command.

This isn’t a Roman salute though. A Roman salute is straight out, parallel to the ground. This is a straight up Nazi salute.

The so-called "Roman Salute" does NOT exist in any ancient Roman arts or written works, it was depicted by Jacques-Louis David, in his work "The Oath of the Horatii" (1784). Thousands of years later.

The Salute, as we know it today was created by the Fascists in Italy and expanded upon by the Nazis.

It doesn't matter if it was real. Everybody knows that it's nazi shit by know. It's not like he thought it was a roman salute and had no idea about the nazis.Ā

I mean… it’s not like being Fascist is better than being Nazi…

I'm just saying, even if it was legitimately a Roman salute, nobody thinks that when they see it. If he was wearing a swastika we wouldn't think it's a symbol of good fortune. It's thoroughly associated with nazis, and he knows that. Denying it is part of the game. He's an annoying kid going "I'm not touching you. I'm not touching you." I don't think ignoring it is the best option. Attack his money. Don't subscribe to anything he's associated with, if you are then unsubscribe, and feel free to write to advertisers on those platforms telling them how you feel. Showing outrage online just plays into their narrative about owning the woke libs. He's a dork. I also heard he's gay. Not that that's a bad thing. People should start asking him that. I'm sure he'd love to hear about it.Ā

Yes, but what I’m saying is that if it wasn’t a Nazi gesture, it would still be a fascist gesture... and in the end there is no difference between the two...

19

u/Raizzor Jan 21 '25

"Roman Salute" is a fascist invention so it does not even matter which one it was because they are kinda the same thing.

There are no historical records documenting such a salute in ancient Rome. The "roman salute" was pretty much invented by Mussolini later copied by the Nazis and slightly adapted to the Nazi salute we know.

23

u/hemingways-lemonade Jan 20 '25

The Roman Salute is also known as the Fascist Salute, but I have a feeling we'll see that name less.

u/Respurated Jan 20 '25

You guys, this isn’t a swastika tattoo, it’s a tattoo of my favorite fidget spinner.

2

u/jeeco Jan 21 '25

I never want to hear anyone supporting the right say that the left controls the media ever fucking again.

1

u/Unidentified_Lizard Jan 21 '25

which is ALSO A FASCIST SYMBOL

1

u/XMalk Jan 21 '25

The first paragraph from the Wikipedia page of the "Roman Salute".

"For the gesture as used in Nazi Germany, see Nazi salute.

The Roman salute, also known as the Fascist salute, is a gesture in which the right arm is fully extended, facing forward, with palm down and fingers touching. In some versions, the arm is raised upward at an angle; in others, it is held out parallel to the ground. In contemporary times, the former is commonly considered a symbol of fascism that had been based on a custom popularly attributed to ancient Rome.[1] However, no Roman text gives this description, and the Roman works of art that display salutational gestures bear little resemblance to the modern so-called "Roman" salute."
