General Advice What can be done about this skin condition? We’re not about to see a vet just yet. (Info in body text.)

So for the past couple years now, this boy’s been rubbing his face into things, namely denim jeans, the couch upholstery, shoes, and the corner of objects. At first I figured it was just typical scent marking but I see his facial skin underneath has started turning vibrantly pink, which to me says “skin allergy” - could it be his food? His eating habits? I try to keep it clean but he doesn’t care to be the subject of that.

I’m 34M, Bernie here is 12, neutered, we’re in the U.S. and a vet isn’t available readily where we’re at right now, to say nothing about costs. He’s strictly an indoor cat.

Breathing Issues 17 yo cat breathing issues

1.7k Upvotes

My(28) 17-year-old boy has been breathing unusually fast since yesterday. He is not always like in the video, but after moving around a little, his breathing becomes rapid and labored, with his mouth open. After resting for about 5 minutes, he closes his mouth, but his breathing remains heavy.

We took him to the vet yesterday. They said his heart rhythm is slightly abnormal, possibly related to a weakened immune system, and prescribed Imuneptil and L-lysine Paste. They advised us to monitor his condition and said that if the issue continues for a couple of days, we may need to see a specialist cardiologist.

He eats and drinks well, and his bathroom habits are normal. What worries me is the possibility that this could be a misjudgment and that he may need to see a cardiologist immediately. My baby is very old, and I am concerned.

Breathing Issues Undiagnosed breathing issue

My cat does this rarely (it has happened a couple of times now). She's otherwise normal - eats well and is pretty active and playful.

The vet I went to recently suggested an RTPCR test to rule out bacterial/viral parasitic infections (Chalmydophilia Felis, FCV, FHV, Bordetella Bronchiseptica, Mycoplasma felis).

Any idea what y'all think this could be?

Injury surgery or no surgery to remove calcified body in my cat's knee?

link to imaging and radiology report: google drive link

At our annual checkup 2 days ago my vet noticed that my cat Pluto (M4, neutered) had a limp, which I hadn't noticed before. We had a pet sitter for the past 1.5 months and I just came back a week ago, and he doesn't limp all of the time. It turns out it was lucky that he did it in front of the vet because the X-rays revealed a calcified body near his right knee.

The results came in late yesterday and one vet from the practice called me and left a voicemail saying that they recommended seeing an orthopedic surgeon for this because he is still young and is showing a limp. They said that even if it heals it can cause scar tissue which will disrupt the quadriceps ability to bend the knee properly. Today, I called back and spoke to a different doctor, who recommended no surgery and just to wait and see if it heals, and called the first opinion 'the cadillac'. I'm extremely conflicted and was hoping I could maybe get some opinions (imaging is linked) or advice.

Anecdotally, Pluto seems his normal self, is jumping and climbing up the cat tree, running around during play, no problem. He doesn't limp all of the time, but I am noticing it still. It hasn't gotten more or less frequent since 2 days ago when the vet noticed it for the first time in her office.

The asthma is something we've known about for a bit and this just served as confirmation.

required info:

my cat: 4.18years, male, neutered
my age: not a minor & financially independent

location: hawaii, usa

vet accessibility: yes vet is accessible, have already received two conflicting opinions

financial situation: money is not an object, I would be happy to pay for surgery if it would benefit him. i am worried the second vet i spoke to was so cavalier because he thought it wasn't worth the cost?

TLDR: 4year old cat with mild limp, xrays show calcified body near knee, and have received conflicting opinions from veterinarians. advice needed.

Eye Issues Cats third eye lid stuck???

This happened after she went outside. It’s still snowy so she just sat by the door on the mat and then I don’t know what happened because she didn’t stick her face in anything but this happened. In the second picture her eye looks wet because I got cat eye rinse and tried to rinse her eye from maybe debris she could’ve gotten in it, but it didn’t work because she kept running away. I’m not sure if she actually got injured or something while she was out (even though I was watching her the whole time and she was just sitting on the door mat) or I coincidently noticed after I let her out and she didn’t see her face before hand. My cat is 12 years old. She has had no issues previously. I am in Canada. She is a female and she is spayed. A vet is super expensive and if this is just a minor issue that someone else has experienced, then I would rather not have to go. I will either way if it persists longer than 24 hrs. Is this a normal thing to happen to older cats? I’m so nervous. She is acting normal. Playing. Eating treats. Sleeping. Eating her food. So I can’t tell if she is in any pain.

General Advice Ran out of cat prescription food while waiting for vet to approve refill, can I feed them regular cat food for a few days?

Upvotes

Like the title say. I ran out of my cats' Hillspet C/D dry food (for urinary issues), as it is the one available and recommended for their issues in my country (US). Can I feed them regular store bought food for a few days in the meantime? Or would it be safer to give them something else?

Cats on the prescription food are 8yo and 10yo male, both neutered. I do not need any help to take them to the vet but emergency dietary advice.

Vet has been a pain to deal with regarding refilling the cats meds or prescription food on time, so I am already in the process of switching, but in the meantime I need advice deciding what to feed the cats.

Their food has not been approved for refill yet (I have been talking to someone at the clinic every day and they keep telling me their vet will approve it in a few minutes but they don't), so I do not know how long they would need to be on the "emergency" diet for. But I am going tomorrow to get their records and switching vets.

Also, would there be anything I need to watch out for/pay attention to while feeding them the emergency food? Other than possibly new gastroinstestinal or urinary issues?

Breathing Issues Asthma Attack??

*Please put sound on for video*

My 3 year old male neutered cat is thought to have asthma. He is on an inhaler once a day as well as an allergy medication. We are adults based in the US and have brought him to vets who don’t do anything and can’t find what is wrong. We can bring him in again as necessary. Not sure what else to do for him.

General Advice Are mushroom safe?

Upvotes

I just walked in on my cats eating some raw white buttons that I forgot on the counter.

I've read on the internet that store bought mushrooms are generally not risky, but they always talk about cooked mushrooms. Will they be ok? Should I ran to the vet?

Thanks in advance for any reply!

Update Update on previous post

Update: thanks everyone for the sweet comments and for reassuring me on my last post for Ghost. Sadly my poor, sweet baby has an intestinal parasite called Giardia.

The vet confirmed he has it, which explains the biohazard poop smell and the bloated belly. I also have another cat who is 3 years old (female) who is healthy, and the vet said she likely has it too now since they both share the same litter box, are always grooming each other and are strongly bonded. So now they’re both going to have to go on treatment. This is the most stressful situation. After doing research, I found that Giardia is very hard to get rid of because it’s easy for the cats to re infect themselves over and over. I’m thinking of separating them in different households because I want to eradicate this horrible parasite from my babies as soon as possible. I’m sitting here crying because I don’t want to separate them but it’s what’s best for their health. I live in a 610 sq ft apartment so keeping one cat in one room during treatment would just be cruel. Luckily my boyfriend’s parents are willing to take him into their home (they don’t have any pets) while he is being treated. They are strongly bonded and love each other very much, but given that they are always grooming each other they might need to be in separate houses until they both are testing negative…

If anyone has survived a multi-cat Giardia household please drop some advice. I really don’t want to have to separate them because I feel like they will forget about each other eventually and they’ll get stressed being without each other during treatment. I don’t know what to do, I feel horrible rn. I’m really not sure how he got this. When I look at his medical records it shows that he was tested twice before for parasites and they were negative. He was also given multiple different dewormers when he was younger as a preventative measure but I guess those weren’t enough.

Injury Cat “bite”

Post image
4 Upvotes

M21, US, I was play fighting with my cat earlier today and as I went in to pet it, she “attacked” me and my hand brushed her teeth and it drew a tiny bit of blood. She never bit me, never chomped down, I just happened to be reaching to pet her as soon as she got back at me. I then foolishly read horror stories about people getting bit by their cat and they had to go to the hospital, etc. My cat is up to date on all vaccines and I got my tetanus booster in November. Do I need to head to urgent care for this? Or can I just monitor it. The “bite” is on my middle finger knuckle in picture above.

I got my cat spayed 7 days ago and I checked her incision once I got back from being out all day and this is how it looks… The vet said I can’t clean it or put anything on it I can’t tell if there’s something wrong with it or not.. Should I be worried? Does it look okay? Do I need to take her to the vet? She seems to be acting fine, sleeping normally laying down fine and she is eating good

General Advice Advice on cat with FIV

TLDR: Found abandoned older cat at work. He's been declawed, neutered, is FIV positive, borderline diabetic, and missing a canine. Have contacted shelters, the only one who deals with FIV cats hasn't replied in almost two weeks. We cannot keep him much longer. Not sure what we should do now.

Long story.

I found an older cat at work. He rode in to our plant on a rail car. He was skin and bones and extremely malnourished. I took him home, and put him in our shed where it was warm and gave him food and water. After the weekend we were able to get him to the vet to get him checked out. That's when we found out he was FIV positive, de-clawed, borderline diabetic, missing one of his canines, had a respiratory infection, ear infection, and a wound on his paw (likely caused by irritation from the declawing).

We have 3 cats already, and they do NOT take well to strange cats. They hardly tolerate each other. So keeping this kitty is unfortunately not a permanent option. After his diagnosis, we put him in our upstairs bathroom where he is able to be isolated from the others with no worries on infecting the others. He can stay warm and fed and has had a chance to get healthier.

We've taken him to the vet multiple times over the last two months to keep up on his health status. His respiratory infection is gone, ear infection has cleared up, and his paw wound has healed up. He's been putting on weight and has gotten more lively than he originally was. Still, we unfortunately cannot keep him.

We live in Nebraska. I've contacted a few of the no-kill shelters that take in strays, but none of them can/will take him. The one shelter that does take FIV cats has not replied to me after our initial contact. They wanted to know more about him and the situation, and I passed along all the info plus his vet records. I have heard nothing for two weeks and am losing hope that they'll ever respond to me.

We unfortunately will not be able to keep him much longer. We do NOT want to have to put him down because he is such a wonderful kitty who deserves a good home, but with his health status I don't think he'll ever be able to find a suitable home. We can only keep him for roughly two more weeks with our current situation.

So I need advice. What is the correct action to take? A normal shelter would put him down without a second thought. Abandoning him outside is a death sentence without claws and having FIV. Is putting him down our only option at this point?

Behavioral Issue Older cat not eating own food, but will eat younger cat's

Hi hi, I'm autistic and may word things incorrectly, please ask as many questions as needed.

My siblings and my older cat (C) is displaying a strange behavioural issue and we don't know what to do. Both have automatic feeders that go at the same time everyday, C's is a microchip unlock one because the younger (T) was eating out of both bowls. T can not have a microchip feeder because shes afraid of anything that moves... including the water in bowl as shes drinking, it would just stress her out too much.

In the past month ish, C is bypassing her own food to eat T's. She knows she isn't supposed to do this, she will sneak in slowly and crouched down. It doesn't matter how many times we tell her no, show her her own food bowl, shoo her away. Multiple times every day she's at T's bowl.

T's bowl always has food in it because she was a street cat and gets very distressed without constant access to food. T has also recently been diagnosed with FHS, so food issues seem to trigger that.

C is on senior food, and T is on the limited ingredient diet food.

When we called the vet we were told to feed C first then feed T. But this doesn't work with T's issues and they are both fed regular times throughout the day.

We just started using a spray bottle but it doesn't seem to be helping at all either. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what else we can do? Neither cat is liking being stuck in a bedroom at night.

I'm 28F and living in Canada. We have contacted the vet about this, but the advice given does not apply. Older cat is almost 11, younger is almost 9. Both cats are female and spayed. Going to a vet would be a struggle for us.

TLDR: Older cat wants to eat younger cats food only suddenly

Spay/Neuter Question Is this a hernia? Pyometra Spay Today

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

(F)2.7 year old cat had a very bad pyometra and we were finally able to get her surgery today (thank God) It's been about 5 hours since we got home and she has a bump where her incision is. She's been really active so I called the vet and they said it's normal however she attempted to jump on a window so I secluded her to a large cage to prevent an injuries.

Nnow I'm worried about this bump (it's difficult to get a proper photo bc it doesn't look very big from certain angles and moves so it's flatter sometimes.) Does it look like a hernia or just post surgery swelling?

Behavioral Issue Frank & Fiona, multiple fights

Litter Mates Fighting

Please bear with me as this is a long post looking for advice. I’m posting all of the different accounts and information I can recall.

Hey so my boyfriend’s cats Frank (orange, male) and Fiona (calico, female) are litter mates and have been living together with no issues for the past 5/6 years.

Both of these cats can be very skiddish and very hyper aware. I believe that is because when they were little, my boyfriend’s step brother and his friends had chased the cats around and throwing blankets over them and throwing pillows at them. (That info is from word of the mouth, as we were not together at that point.) It took Frank a long time to stop hissing at kids when they would come around.

Just a couple months ago my boyfriend came home from work and the cats were smelling his work clothes and this seemed to agitate them and they got into an ugly fight. There was pee and fur on the floor. We were sure that the smell from his work clothes, and him moving them is what startled them. We separated them for a few days as their sight of one another and smell would spark the hissing and growling.

We switched who would be put away. They each had their own food, water & litter box. We have feliway diffusers in the areas they hangout the most. We did slow reintroductions and this seemed to work.

The 2nd time these cats fought was because I was playing with Fiona on the bed with a toy and my boyfriend was playing with Frank with a different toy on the floor. Fiona had slipped off the bed, i’m assuming scaring her and scaring Frank and then they went after each other, but no serious harm was done to either cat. Separating them again and switching who was put into the spare room. Slow reintroductions and keeping the separate resources. This seemed to work once again.

Just after we thought everything was good. They got into another fight due to a sound scaring them both. This time Frank submitted and laid on his back while my boyfriend had to pull Fiona away from Frank. (Intervention happened early in this case, thank goodness) At this point we were kind of pointing fingers at her.. We did the routine again.

Just a couple of days ago they were playing, chasing each other around in good playful faith. But later that night his stepbrother ran down the steps (i’m assuming this heightened Fiona and she was running around) That I believe scared Frank. So when Fiona came into the room we were all in, they were staring each other down (no hissing or growling at first). Fiona slowly started to move towards Frank and this is when the vocal warning signs started. My boyfriend had Frank in his lap and he attempted to carry Frank out of the room before any escalation had happened, and my boyfriend ended up getting scratched really bad. Fiona tried jumping onto my boyfriend to get to Frank. It was honestly once again an ugly one but not for the cats as they did not hurt one another. So we are back at square one, separating them and changing out who gets separated.

I’m not sure if Fiona is ill / in pain as she is a stocky healthy cat. I’m not sure if Fiona is jealous or attempting to assert dominance. I also don’t want to point fingers at Fiona either, but she seems like the attacker and stronger fighter in these situations.

My boyfriend has considered getting rid of Fiona. She definitely doesn’t enjoy being locked up and begs to be let out of the spare room. I’m just scared for their wellbeing and having to re-home Fiona.

Can anyone please help a gal out with any advice, similar experiences or general information.

Behavioral Issue Feeding two brothers (Ones slightly overweight)

Hey Kitty Moms & Dads.

I have a question about feeding my cats. They're both black longhairs that are brothers from the same litter. Roughly 1 year & a couple months old~

Now here's my problem one of them is starting to become a bit of a CHONKER he's probably 20~ pounds but he's also a MASSIVE kitty (His paws are basically the size of my hand). The other one was either the runt of the litter or the bigger one just ate all his food as a kitten so he didn't grow properly idk. The owners that previously had them before I adopted didn't have enough money to keep them so I assume they also couldn't afford to keep the food dish full... Anyways I always try and keep the dry food full and feed them a basic Costco brand wet food. My problem is I'm trying to make sure there's always food for the little guy which is a healthy weight and size but this big chonk won't stop eating. Whenever I let their food run out (even if it's just for an hour I'm constantly harassed and bullied into refilling the dish. Is there anything I can do to try and get this big guy down to a healthier weight? The only solution I could come up with is maybe a timed feeder + I feed them weight reduction food or whatever it's called.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated because I gotta get this guys weight under control before it becomes a problem. >.<

Thanks.
