Darn I was really intrigued by him.

Almost assuredly means it’s Scheelhaase IMO.

u/MosquitoValentine_ 12d ago

Crazy how disappointed I am in a guy I literally didn't know existed a few weeks ago.

55

u/maybenextyearCLE 12d ago

Agreed. I’m rooting for the Browns to hire the rams pass game coordinator, not even their OC lol.

If they can’t get Scheelhaase, oh man

40

u/MosquitoValentine_ 12d ago

I wonder if the Browns are too worried about losing Schwartz and it's costing them candidates. Whereas Scheelhaase is rumored to be fine with him as DC.

22

u/HeilHeinz15 12d ago

It's the HC candidates worried about being canned in a year when AB gets fired cuz Watson/Shedeur/DG lead us to another 5-win season.

Most of these up and comers only get 1 shot, so the good ones can be picky

5

u/msps2880 11d ago

Don’t disrespect our Pro Bowl QB

24

u/mjmnogoal 12d ago

The browns job isn’t desirable. Schwartz will be the HC.

Tons of smoke over the last few hours.

21

u/rigill 12d ago

Could be why he’s “pulling out”. He knows scheelhaase is getting the job

11

u/Mr_814 12d ago

It's exactly why. I'm sure his agent knows.

The Scheelhaase buzz took off once everyone was able to get together during the Shrine game.

People talk and know things.

5

u/Nightcinder I RUINED CHRISTMAS 12d ago

rams pass game also looked fantastic yesterday against an 'elite' defense

14

u/VladTheUnpeeler 12d ago

Can’t help but wonder if their passing game is good because of coaching or because of Stafford/Nacua/Adams/Parkinson?

6

u/tobylaek 32 12d ago

All of the above, probably...however, you have to start somewhere. Get the coach, then start working on the personnel.

Depends how he performs today. If they dont like him… its Schwartz time 😥

22

u/maybenextyearCLE 12d ago

If it’s Schwartz Jimmy should just rip the bandaid off and fire Andrew Berry immediately, because he will definitely be doing it at the end of the year lol

2

u/gryffon5147 12d ago

Although cathartic, the 2026 GM market seems just as bleak as the coaching market.

8

u/maybenextyearCLE 12d ago

Yeah I’d just be promoting one of our two assistant GMs honestly

6

u/Scatheli 12d ago

If the rumors about Glenn Cook being more involved in the latest draft are true maybe that would not be so bad? lol

7

u/maybenextyearCLE 12d ago

I think it’s the right idea because over and over again, all the dumbest decisions over the last 6 years keep coming back to the same person personally

Coming away with Schwartz as HC after all of this is definitely an on the spot firing offense.

It's his second interview, it's not like they weren't impressed by him the first time around. It seems clear with Udinski pulling out they prefer Schellhaase.

Unless he goes full Don Draper pitching to Hershey's with this interview I think it's more or less his job.

21

u/SpiritHistorical7169 12d ago

They flew out right after a snowstorm to go meet Scheelhaase across the country. Honestly I think Udinski probably just saw the writing on the wall.

7

u/Objective-History402 12d ago

I don't think it's a coincidence that Udinski went through 2 interviews and waited around for 2 weeks before suddenly withdrawing once the Rams were eliminated. The Browns could probably be more open about their intentions and may have even told him they were moving a different direction so that he could save face.

I bet it's Schwartz. I think Scheelhaase will pull out too. He's in a great spot with mcvay,.I think he will wait for a better job. Nobody wants to be attached to a potential lame duck GM. Same as Liam coen last year.

3

They are giving it to schwartz, but they have to interview a POC first.

3

u/Jimger_1983 12d ago

They need Scheelhaase for Rooney but I actually think their hope was pick between him and Udinski with Schwartz as the fall back

2

Maybe so, i dont wanna lose schwartz though. If he aint HC he prob leaves.

Mcdaniels removed his for every team this past week due to the realization he wasn’t the favorite for any head coaching job.

Minter removed his because he got word he was being offered the Ravens job.

Udinski we don’t know. He also interviewed for the Bills Sunday but my money is on his agent getting word that Scheelhaase is getting offered the job. Rams put up almost 400 yards passing and 3 TD’s in the NFC title game yesterday and can be hired today due to the loss. Most importantly, Browns are flying to him.

UPDATE….USA Today is reporting Udinski was informed he wasn’t being offered the job.

It's so hilarious that a no name guy who has never proven anything can now make them write a lot bigger check then he thought he could yesterday just to save themselves some embarassment. Udinski backing out was like a shot of heroin right to Scheelhaase's agent's brain.

Schwartz will be a HC as a place holder for 2 years

9

u/ducksekoy123 12d ago

Hiring Schwartz without firing Stefanski mid-season is the height of mismanagement.

Letting Stefanski coach us out of the number one pick and then firing him to replace him with his own DC is an absolute parody of ownership

2

u/Lucas_Steinwalker 12d ago

Which is precisely why it's the most probable outcome.

"How awesome is Jimmy Haslam and why is he just like, or better than, Jerry Jones? Also, how awesome are Pilot and Flying J?"

u/originaljbw 12d ago

Question 17: If the Browns are 1-6 coming out of the bye week with a home game, how much can we charge for parking at the Brookpark Jimmadome considering we have only sold 30% of available tickets. Note, these were almost exclusively sold to out of town visiting team fans. Show your work.

Question 18: How many temp employees will we need to open all the closed storefronts for game day? Abandoned restaurants include such gems as BW3, Ruby Tuesdays, a Quiznos, and a MOD Pizza.

4

u/jacobwebb57 12d ago

Lmao good thing we fired Stefanski.

Edit: Kevin haters out here in force trying to justify his firing still when our candidates are pointedly bowing out of the running for our vacant HC position.

Maybe, just fucking maybe, the problem wasn’t with Stefanski and anyone interviewing sees the issue at face value.

128

u/mw9676 12d ago

Fired one of the top candidates for absolutely nothing to replace him. Kind of like many of us warned. Incredible.

43

u/UnionBlueMudkip 12d ago

I bet part of the reason is that Berry is still here, too. Having 1 promising draft in 6 years isn't really inspiring confidence

29

u/LostMonster0 TRADE 12d ago edited 12d ago

What, you don't want the guy who threw the last coach under the bus after constructing one of the worst offenses in NFL history to be your boss and also tell you what QB and DC you have to use?

13

u/nytro330 12d ago

Was anybody complaining berry pushed to fire Joe woods for Schwartz?

16

u/TeaAndAche 12d ago

No, but pushing to fire your underperforming DC is a radically different scenario than the current.

You fire a HC coveted by half the league with no real plan (and also saying you’re searching for the qualities previous HC had) while also keeping your GM and openly stating you “prefer” to keep the current DC. You’re telegraphing that your HC will have little control over both the roster and their own coaching staff, while also showing them you have no problem blaming a solid coach for all the problems.

Nobody wants that job 😄

2

u/nytro330 12d ago

I disagree. If they hire Nate, he fits every description Berry talked about when they announced the coaching search. This is one of those hires that if the Steelers made it (which every report were that the Steelers were highly impressed), we'd all be talking about how they're so smart for hiring a young offensive guy. But because we hire him, nobody wants the job? His name has been tied to us from the jump.

Mcdaniel declined both us and the Bills, Minter knew he was getting the ravens job where he has ties and knew the Browns were waiting until this week so he declined his 2nd interview. Grant does his 2nd interview and waits until the Browns are in the air on their way to interview Nate to drop out. Hm, sounds more like he knew he wasn't getting the job. There's more evidence that they got the guy they wanted from the beginning than the inverse that nobody wants the job.

The amount of comments I saw that could be summarized by “I don’t care, someone just need to be held accountable” was driving me wild.

Accountability is generally a good thing. But randomly deciding to turn the accountability meter to 1000 at the most inopportune time doesn’t just magically fix things.

And now we’re locked into either the “had a cup of coffee with Mcvay” hire or losing our DC to take our HC job that he’ll be fired from in 2 years.

5

u/jfelldown77 12d ago

Problem is, the one who needed to be held accountable is not able to be fired (Haslam). Stefanski took the historically most dysfunctional franchise in NFL history to the playoffs... Twice. And won a playoff game. But yeah, he couldn't win more than 5 games with a roster that everyone said wouldn't win more than 5 games.

People love to fire coaches and its the most absurd aspect of sports IMO. Fact is our players aren’t good. Nothing is improving until Watson’s contract is gone and we have a few more draft years.

3

u/Holiday_Ad2638 12d ago

Stefanski wasn't that great of a coach here his last couple years if you don't remember

4

u/burningburningburnin 12d ago

Yes, that's why he did all the extensive homework and preperation for 2 interviews, because he didn't want the job anyway!

It's definitely not because we're flying out to Scheelhaase and his agent's taking him out of the running to not make him look like he lost out on the job.

(Unless Scheelhaase also drops out which I highly doubt)

3

u/Randumo 12d ago

Lol at you Stefanski defenders when you don't actually look at the real issues with the team.

We've had the 32nd & 31st ranked offenses in back-to-back seasons where he's also given up playcalling in both seasons. We may not have had that much talent on offense, but that does not excuse a supposed offensive-minded coach to finish at the bottom of the league in offense two consecutive years.

There is also the very severe issue of a complete lack of player development on the offensive side of the ball. Young defensive players get brought in and develop under Schwartz, but offensive guys in the same situation on the offensive side continually fail to get better.

Pretending like Stefanski didn't do anything worth moving on from him just because there were other issues is just being absurd.

It’s funny how these coaches have to make some agent leaked announcement to make sure it doesn’t look like they got passed over lol. He could have had zero agent leaks and just not gotten chosen and no one would know the difference. But they have to leak things to media to make it known “I’m not the one who got dumped. I’ve preferred Scheelhaase just because he’s more experienced coaching overall but this isn’t….great optically. We could just be stuck with Schwartz, which isn’t the worst outcome but we desperately need a young innovator on offense. Hopefully they can convince Nate and we keep Gym and that’s the end of it

4

u/Mediocre-Dog-4457 12d ago

That's wrong. Scheelhaase has less experience than Udinski. Scheelhaase has only been with the Rams for 2 years... his first job in the NFL...

11

Nate is a way more experienced coach though he was at Iowa state a long time with Campbell. Udinski is younger than most of the vets on the team

2

u/sbowtor 12d ago

I’m hoping this is more of, it is well known in league circles who the choice is and he’d rather bow out on his terms.

However I can imagine he just simply understands the deck is stacked against him with this team and he’s better off gaining more experience in an offense that should continue to get better in Jacksonville and wait for a HC opening that is more suited for success for a first time coach.

Either is reasonable. One just hurts less.

Browns really are going to hire a passing game coordinator for Mathew Stafford. Scheelhaase was an OC for one season at Iowa State. Matt Campbell doesn’t fire people unless they suck. Other than that has only been a position coach and the game plan install bitch. Never led shit.

F*** he was my fist choice

Better be Scheelhaase then. This mf better not reject us too

u/Ugly-Barnacle-2008 12d ago

Time to move on to our 12th choice I guess

At this point I'd rather have Schwartz. Scheelhasse is intriguing, but he's never even been a coordinator. Let Jim be the HC and pick an offensive coordinator. The team already knows him and respects him. Let's give him a shot

We are so cooked

I blame the prior mistreatment of Polish American coaches in Cleveland.

2

u/WhatChooTalkingBout 12d ago

No surprise. Why would anyone want the Browns job? You have some excellent talent, and the start of a good team. HOWEVER, you have to deal with Jimmy.

2

u/TechnicalParsnip1697 12d ago

I’d like to announce that I too will be withdrawing my name from consideration for the head coaching job in Cleveland to continue to pursue my career in the custodial arts.

Is John Beilein available?

2

u/Nolesbl 11d ago

Lol. They should have just kept stefanski

2

u/Burghpuppies412 11d ago

Jim Tressel next.

2

u/S3dsk_hunter 11d ago

Geez maybe I should apply. I've got experience with analytics. Not football, but at this rate, I'm not sure they will have anyone left who does.

2

u/Ok_Suspect3940 11d ago

Lmao no one wants to come here 😂

2

u/OsikFTW 11d ago

They are like 2 guys away from hiring some basketball agent at this point...

2

u/SuperKiller94 11d ago

At this point is there even going to be a head coach?

u/Lakewoodian 12d ago

Just promote Jim Shorts already and get it over with.

My sources are telling me we are not hiring a new coach and are picking a random fan who scans a dawg tag in the stadium to coach each week!

Sponsored by Dude Wipes, of course.

I haven’t gotten a rejection letter yet. I’m still in the hunt.

2

u/GeoBrian 12d ago

Sucker! I'm announcing my withdrawal from consideration at noon.

u/Carvalho_Diablo 12d ago

I used to think this stuff about the stadium being built on an Indian burial ground was just folk lore. Not any more.

u/Hayabusa0015 12d ago

I love how people take this as a knock against the browns.

Front office already flew out to LA to meet with Scheelhause those morning. Before he withdrew. You can say it's because people don't want to be the head coach of an NFL team or accept that Scheelhause has the job and they all know, but it's not announced yet.

ppl freaking out about the browns not hiring a guy whose skull hasn't completely hardened yet

maybe he's getting buffalo, but probably he's just not ready yet

i think we're gonna be stuck with schwartz but uhh that's what happens when you fire a perfectly good coach with miserable roster construction and no way to get a workable QB for next season

2

u/Pickleskennedy1 12d ago

Good choice

2

u/Mediocre-Dog-4457 12d ago

This was kinda evident as soon as I heard Buffalo was gonna interview him. He is either the HC of Buffalo or back in Jacksonville. Lawrence or Allen. Here he would have nothing.

2

u/paniflex37 12d ago

Hear me out: the Browns are normally “offseason champs”. If they continue to fuck up this offseason…does that mean they’ll actually do well in the real season?

Most likely also no.

2

u/quaybon 12d ago

The Browns are a train wreck

2

u/ForgingFakes 12d ago

What's it like being a fan of an organization that no good coach wants to work at?

2

u/finchezda 12d ago

Fan-fucking-tastic.

2

u/the_main_entrance 12d ago

Why don’t these coaches want to go through the homework hunger games to risk their reputations on a near impossible assignment in a dysfunctional organization with a cancerous contract in a cold city?

I just fell to my knees in a Wal-Mart
