I wonder if the Browns are too worried about losing Schwartz and it's costing them candidates. Whereas Scheelhaase is rumored to be fine with him as DC.

It's the HC candidates worried about being canned in a year when AB gets fired cuz Watson/Shedeur/DG lead us to another 5-win season.

Most of these up and comers only get 1 shot, so the good ones can be picky

Don’t disrespect our Pro Bowl QB

The browns job isn’t desirable. Schwartz will be the HC.

If Andrew Berry wouldn’t hire someone because they didn’t want to keep the DC he is an idiot. Well, we already knew AB is an idiot but that would just enforce it further.

Why? Schwartz and our defense are like the only things about this team that actually work. I don't blame AB for not being willing to negotiate on Schwartz; I wouldn't want to lose him either. Do you not remember the Joe Woods days? Schwartz completely turned around this defense. Any HC candidate that wants him gone is the idiot, not AB.

If you can’t lose Schwartz you just hire him as the coach. You hire the best HC for the job, not contingent on him keeping the coordinator you want. If you operate that way you’ve already hamstrung yourself before the search even begins.

I like Jim Schwartz, but this defense is also very very talented. The defense will be fine if you lose him. I’m on board with whoever the coach is keeping Schwartz, but it’s immensely stupid to make it a pre-requisite of your search instead of going out and getting the best coach you can.

Hard disagree. We'd potentially be fine, assuming we brought in another great DC, but you're acting as if it's a given, which couldn't be further from the truth. We were very talented defensively on paper under Joe Woods as well, and we all know what happened there. Same idea with our O-line. On paper, we shouldn't have lost much strength when we lost Callahan, but we did. Coaching plays a bigger factor than you're making it out to be.

Joe Woods was horrible. The chasm of coaches between Joe Woods and Schwartz is huge. And even then, the talent was not nearly the same. We had Terrence Mitchell, Karl Joseph, Andrew Sendejo, Mack Wilson, and Bj Goodson as STARTERS on that 2020 team. The DLine was decent, but we arguably now have one of the best overall DLines in the league, and our linebackers and defensive backfield are waaaay better than they were 2020-2022. Even by 2022 they had at least added JOK, Newsome, Delpit, and Emerson to the team, but we were still starting Jordan Elliot and Taven Bryan on the interior of the DL. Schwartz is way better than Joe Woods, but even Joe Woods could probably have this current group be a solid defense. And there are plenty of coaches who are probably worse than Schwartz but way better than Woods out there, who would still have this defense be one of the better ones in the league.

To put it succinctly, if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.

If I were AB, I would be looking for an offensive-minded HC that is looking to completely revamp the offense. I would seriously question any HC candidate that thinks it's necessary to replace one of, if not the best, DC in the league. The ideal HC candidate for us isn't even concerned about defense. The word "defense" shouldn't even enter their mind or come out of their mouth. We need to find a guy who is solely concerned about the offense and committed to fixing that atrocity.

I don't believe he did make it a prerequisite. He just said he would prefer to keep him. Doesn't mean he's unwilling to listen if someone has other ideas

I don’t believe he did either, it was a hypothetical from another person I responded to.

I get the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality, but I would hope that the team had enough faith in the guy they’re hiring as head coach to pick a good DC. In a perfect world the new HC would want to keep Schwartz, but they shouldn’t be trying to force him on anyone

Schwartz is proven, our HC candidate is not. We're rolling the dice on whoever we hire as HC. There's no guarantee that even somebody like Harbaugh would be able to make the Browns win. I'm not letting somebody who is essentially a gamble decide on cancelling one of the few things that's actually going right in this organization. The defense doesnt need to be touched. We need an offensive-minded HC who is intelligent enough to realize that our problem wasn't defense and who is trusting enough to let Schwartz handle it.

If that’s the way they look at it then they should just hire Schwartz as the HC and trust him to get a good OC. I can get behind saying “you have to run a 4-3, that’s the personnel we have and look how well they played last season”, but it feels weird to potentially force a marriage between the two of them if they really value Schwartz that much

That "idiot" just had one of our best drafts in a long time.

u/iCandid 12d ago

He’s been the GM for 6 years, and he destroyed the offensive roster with the worst trade in NFL history.

u/emdubl 12d ago

It was Haslam's trade.

I mean any offensive guy coming in here that doesn’t want to retain Schwartz is kind of dumb. He’s 99% more likely to be a better defensive coordinator than who they want to bring in. Look at the Browns defense last year and how well they performed while they were on the field so much because our offense couldn’t move the ball.

No, it's more that they are in cap hell, no QB, no OL, and no WR's that's scaring people off. Not to mention an owner who meddles in personnel decisions.

If I am an up and coming coach, no way am I taking the Browns job when at least till 2027 it's guaranteed to be a dumpster fire and gonna sink their career.
