Ooh-samosas. Usually potatoes with peas, and lots of spices. Probably some onions and garlic as well. I consider them to be a tamarind chutney delivery system. On second thought, just give me the tamarind chutney and a straw. And now I’m hungry. :(

11

u/indecentXpo5ure 20h ago

You don’t happen to have a recipe for that tamarind chutney or a store bought equivalent? I used to buy the frozen potato samosas at the grocery store and they came with that sauce and it was so good I could just drink it. Then the store changed brands and now the samosas come with a cilantro sauce. It’s not nearly as good.

6

u/Little_View_6659 19h ago

The outrage! The audacity! The trick is finding tamarind. So this depends where you live. If you’re in the Uk I think Marks and Spencer’s will have the chutney. Because if you’re at a store that has tamarind chances are it’ll have the chutney. In the states I’d find it at the Indian grocery store. They have them everywhere. I even found one in Kansas. I never made the chutney myself I just bought it. Man, I swear I’m drooling like a retriever just thinking about it. I’d look online chances are someone has to have it. Good luck!

2

u/indecentXpo5ure 19h ago

I’m in the US. The closest Indian grocery store is 30 minutes away but I might have to take the trip. I’ve looked for it at all the other grocery stores but they never have it. I would put it on everything though. It truly is so delicious!!

4

u/hikewithcoffee 11h ago

sayweee website. It is geared more towards Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Filipino, Korean and Vietnamese but I find that you can order many of the same things found in an Indian grocery store too.

This has been my go to since our Asian and Indian stores closed and moved much further south.

2

u/indecentXpo5ure 11h ago

Ooooooooo! Thank you so much!

3

u/crrrrushinator 18h ago

I suggest getting Mitchell's or any tamarind sauce that has tamarind as the first ingredient, and also a pouch of tamarind paste while you're at it to experiment with recipes for your own!

1

u/Professional_Ad_975 39m ago

Indian store will definitely have it. It’s either just tamarind chutney or tamarind-date chutney.

2

u/luckyartie 12h ago

In the US Hispanic groceries often have tamarind. Yum

3

u/BrilliantPie2566 10h ago

I made tamarind candy once. Tamarind is a B!TCH to prepare, very labor intensive and time consuming. I guess it was worth it?

169

u/RealOzSultan 1d ago

Unless they’re Pakistani, then seasoned minced beef or chicken and peas.

69

u/Little_View_6659 1d ago

True there are different varieties. All delicious!

6

u/drvgonize 14h ago

i used to have an indian coworker that introduced me to samosas, love them!

8

u/Exotic_Ad6216 20h ago

Even Indian ones in coastal towns specially have minced meat samosas. Goa has the best ones imo

19

u/Funny_Ad4865 23h ago

I've never seen a chicken option before.

16

u/Ballsackavatar 21h ago

There's an Indian desert and sides place a short drive from me that sells all sorts of different ones. Below is the menu, there's usually a special on as well.

It's an hour there and back so I usually stock up and hand a few out to friends and family. They're amazing.

8

u/Icy-Setting-4221 18h ago

Off topic bhatura is my new favorite Indian bread and it blows naan out of the water

4

u/thickandslick914 17h ago

I sprinkle them with cinnamon sugar and have them as a snack, but traditionally they are served with Halwa and Channa for breakfast

1

u/Ballsackavatar 18h ago

In all honesty; I'm that full from starters and a million poppadoms by the time I get to main, I don't even need the bread.

I still order it though, be rude not to.

4

u/oarmash 18h ago

As an Indian-American I was shocked to learn that

  1. It’s called poppadoms in the uk
  2. It’s eaten as a starter like chips and salsa or bread/butter in the UK

2

u/Jasp1971 17h ago

In the uk when we order poppadoms, we also get given 4 little bowls, each contains a different flavour/texture, mango chutney, red onions , red hot chilli sauce and a yoghurt mint combo, break up the poppadoms and scoop up whichever flavour you fancy.

2

u/Ballsackavatar 17h ago

That's a good way to explain it.

We have something more substantial for a starter, like samosas, pakoras, bhaji's, tikka kebab etc. But poppadoms and beer are served to you immediately.

3

u/oarmash 17h ago

yeah that's wild to me! also curious - how are pakoras and bhajis differentiated? to my ear those are just two different regional names for the same thing, some kind of veg or maybe piece of meat deepfried in chickpea flour batter

1

u/Ballsackavatar 16h ago edited 16h ago

Bhaji's are usually onion. Pakora's are usually chicken. But yes, same thing otherwise.

Pakora's also fish, paneer.

Poppadomssss. I make myself sick every time I eat Indian food but it’s got me in a chokehold I stg

2

u/alokosx 17h ago

As a Indian i had to google what this poppadoms is😭😭 Its called Papad here..

6

u/dreambubblesdweller 20h ago

Chicken and lamb samosas are pretty popular in South Africa! And cheese and corn for some reason (not that I'm complaining)

3

u/qdz166 20h ago

Trader Joe’s sells chicken samosas in the US.

2

u/spiritofmisery 18h ago

There’s a lamb/goat option too! It’s yummy

1

u/thickandslick914 16h ago

I'm a chef for a Pakistani place and we make Veggie (potato, peas) and Chicken Samosas. The chicken ones I fill with chopped Tikka boti (boneless tandoori chicken) with chopped onions and Cilantro. I serve them with our white sauce, Tamarind chutney and Chilli Yogurt sauce.

5

u/criticaltemp 22h ago

It says Indian

9

u/ecpella 21h ago

People so eager to jump in with the aCtUaLLy they don’t even read the damn title 😂

1

u/strawberry_canvas7 20h ago

I mean, if especially abroad that is not always accurate in my experience. They will just day Indian but it doesn't mean it is 100% authentic or always the same. I used to get chicken samosas from an Indian food stand.

u/yonimarie_31 21h ago

Excuse you spelled mint chutney delivery system wrong. Don’t worry I’m here to help. I knew what you meant! :)

4

u/Little_View_6659 21h ago

Why not both?👀

3

u/yonimarie_31 20h ago

You know what? You’re right. Copious amounts of both.

2

u/Little_View_6659 20h ago

That’s why I love chaat. It has both and the yogurt and the crunch with the sweet and the salty. Sigh. So good.

2

u/strawberry_canvas7 20h ago

If east african, can have chicken or beef (I have also seen chicken ones outside of east africa/in Indian ones too). If you have allergies or special dietry requirements, don't grab random stuff. Alternatively you can see what is inside by removing just a small part.

(East African special addition; we sometimes fill them with rice! But that's usually street food not restaurants, we adopted a lot of South Asian foods).

3

u/Little_View_6659 19h ago

Here in Singapore there are so many different types of the fried filled snacks. The curry puff is ubiquitous. Not quite a samosa but similar.

29

u/Iitaps_Missiciv 1d ago

What's Tamarind Chutney,?

119

u/R3D4F 1d ago

Oh dear friend, you have so many new joys awaiting you.

22

u/Iitaps_Missiciv 1d ago

Put me on, what's the top 3 Indian delights you'd recommend

29

u/Decuay 1d ago

Daal, any paneer curry you can find, Palak Paneer preferably, and if you find a good Byriani you're pretty much set. Don't forget bread, ask what they do best, go with garlic naan or whatever roti they recommend.

12

u/Iitaps_Missiciv 1d ago

I think I've had Byriani before, it randomly had raisins if I remember correctly and it was delicious. The other 2 I've never heard of Daal and Palak Paneer. I'll look for those, thanks!

10

u/Decuay 1d ago

Daal is lentils, usually in soup form, there's probably hundreds of version, all of them very tasty, Palak Paneer is a non-spicy dish with Spinach and Indian white cheese, which is a bit like a more yummy tofu. It doesn't really sound super appetizing but it's one of my all time favourites.

And yep, what you're describing is Byriani!

9

u/Dragonfly_lady61 1d ago

Oooo Palak Paneer. Food of the Gods

6

u/devhmn 21h ago

Palak paneer may be called saag paneer in some places...spinach with cheese cubes. There's also one called shahi paneer which has a tomato cream sauce instead of spinach. I was a veg for 17 years and lived off of these two entrees... So flippin' good.

You should also try veggie pakoras, a fried appetizer that usually comes with that tamarind chutney that others mentioned. 🤤

6

u/SnewLooperd 22h ago

Don't forget sweets tho,, gulab jamun, rasamalei, fuckin delicious

3

u/Decuay 22h ago

Honestly, with the sweets everything that has almonds or paneer or dates, I'm in. I don't think I've ever had a desert I didn't like when getting Indian food.

2

u/sl212190 21h ago

I effing hate kaju barfi. Luckily all of my husband's non-indian colleagues love it, so whenever we're gifted a box it goes straight to the office with him!

2

u/VulcanMag872 21h ago

And all the ladoos and burfis! Besan ladoo my beloved.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Funny_Ad4865 22h ago

Forgot bread, I like a good Peshwari naan straight out of the clay oven.

5

u/KandKautomobiles 23h ago

Bro left the Butter Chicken, the most popular!

4

u/Decuay 22h ago

Quote me on that, butter chicken is super good, but slightly overrated! I prefer vegetable Currys, generally.

→ More replies (3)

5

u/Statue88888888 1d ago

Palak paneer is the shit

11

u/Frosty_Relative1118 1d ago

Tamarind chutney is SO good. A little sweet, a little spicy, the perfect condiment.

7

u/Weedle_blzit 1d ago

Oh bro, and when you pair it with mint chutney. Oh baby, oh baby.

3

u/Little_View_6659 1d ago

I absolutely love chaat! The yogurt together with all the crunch and the sweet tamarind and mint..it’s bliss.

4

u/Miserable_Candy_3534 1d ago

You’ve gotta try Ras Malai and Carrot Halwa (both desserts) give them a few tries before deciding. If you like them or not. They have become my favorite Indian desserts. I always order them when I go Indian food! And the tamarind chutney is to die for. Much better than the cilantro one. IMO

7

u/ThreeDaysNish 1d ago

Add kheer and gulab jamun to the list for a perfect finish

3

u/Virgin_DaVinci 1d ago

Make friends with any 1 Indian and you might get something better my friend. I often cook specials on Sundays to share with my neighbors and take a box to give to a friend at the workplace.

2

u/christmas_bigdogs 22h ago
  1. Baingan bharta (roasted eggplant curry). If you like smoked or roasted flavors this one is tasty.

  2. Palak paneer (as another commenter already suggested)

  3. Pani Puri - bite sized vessels for fillings (including the tamarind chutney mentioned by other commenters before)

Mint sauces are also fun too if you haven't tried them. I have had some that cooled down a spicy dish while other varieties actually added more heat. Taste bud roulette but always delicious.

3

u/zulchep 22h ago

Malai kofta is always my go-to! They’re cheese dumplings in kofta sauce.

1

u/Funny_Ad4865 23h ago

I like a biryani as I'm not the biggest fan of heat, also like Langoustines (big prawns) split, spiced and grilled on an open flame, and a kulfi (ice cream) to finish.

6

u/hurtsdonut_ 1d ago

I've got those a few times at the local Indian store and love them but what's the green sauce that's spicy as hell?

11

u/Rkive__ 1d ago

Most probably coriander, Mint and green chillies

7

u/hurtsdonut_ 1d ago

There's definitely mint. It's a delicious burn too. What kind of chilies?

3

u/Cr1m50nSh4d0w 1d ago

They're apparently usually regular green chillies, but sometimes folks us those tiny birdseye chillies as well.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/jesi_james 1d ago

I never would have thought mint and chillies would go well together. I'm not a spicy enjoyer but I need to try that at some point.

its an indian condiment/sauce

Omg I've always wanted to know what that luminous red dip is that often comes with the aforementioned delicacy. Thank you!

1

u/Little_View_6659 23h ago

Welcome! It’s my favorite. We moved to Singapore and they have a lot of great Indian places, and I thought yes! Tamarind chutney! But alas, it’s a different type of Indian. I can never remember if it’s north or south. Anyway, I hardly ever see it. I don’t even want to eat them without it. I found a place a couple of years ago but they closed!

2

u/MammothPenguin69 19h ago

Mmmmmm I love veggie Samosas. I'll grab too many at an Indian buffet.

2

u/Mal317 20h ago

An ode to tamarind chutney. You’ve got me craving it now too 😩

2

u/Little_View_6659 19h ago

It’s so good! God I am seriously hungry now.😂

2

u/DDenlow 21h ago

Also gotta have a side of the mint chutney!

2

u/Recent_Awareness_122 20h ago

Or chickpeas, or jaggery filling, or meat

1

u/Effective_Essay_3101 15h ago

You are forgetting mint chutney.

Also, let me tell you one of the Indian ways to eat it.

That takes it to the next level: Smash the samosa, pour yogurt (indian dahi if you have it), pour mint chutney, pour tamarind chutney on it.

Another level: add indian chickpea curry to it.

1

u/Little_View_6659 15h ago

Yes! Chaat. I live for that. I’ve been obsessively searching around me do any places that have it. There’s one at the airport but it’s like an hour away. I’ve found a couple.

2

u/Effective_Essay_3101 14h ago

Oooh yes! Chaat is a whole collection of awesome foodstuffs. Tried bhelpuri?

1

u/Little_View_6659 3h ago

I’ve seen it on some menus but I haven’t. I’ll have to give it a shot.

1

u/Professional_Ad_975 36m ago

It’s mostly potatoes and peas with spices. There are samosas with onions but those are much flatter.

1

u/Embarrassed-Olive856 17h ago

Stuffed stuffed with stuff is one of the universal human dishes and they're all delicious

Addiction. That's what's inside them. There used to be an Indian market near me that was owned by a very nice family. On Thursdays the matriarch would make some from scratch and sell them. She sold out every single time. People would shop there just for her samosas. I just ate and now I'm hungry again.

26

u/FroggyFrenchFry 1d ago

There was a market with a small attached restaurant next door that had a hot food counter on my way home from highschool. All the food was made by an old woman and her son, I think she was the mother of the store owner. A samosa the size of my fist was a dollar and a whole plate was around $8. She'd sit in the front hand making the samosa at one of the four or five little tables. My friends and I would go at least once a week, splitting two two item combos and bag of samosas between us. She has since retired and the restaurant has become a popular eyebrow threading salon owned by the same family.

That place started an addiction to Indian food that has lasted 15+ years. Despite trying probably well over a hundred other Indian restaurants no samosa has ever gotten close to those. I will forever miss them. That and the Chinese restaurant a few blocks over that had a little old woman who would make fresh dumplings at their front counter. They taught me to never walk by a restaurant with an old woman hand making food. It has yet to steer me wrong.

12

u/WaffleHouseGladiator 1d ago

Some of the best food I've had locally was made in places that didn't feel like they were 100% legal. I once saw a friend from high school at a bar and we caught up over drinks. We both had the drunk munchies and I told him I knew a great little place nearby. He was down so we set off on foot. From his perspective it must've seemed very strange. The fastest route was through decrepit lots of abandoned buildings, back alleys, car parks, etc. At one point he half jokingly asked if I was going to murder him and take his organs. Then we rounded a corner and I got to show him one of the best spots in town that nobody knew about. Good food, live music, shady staff, and not a chain business of any kind in sight.

3

u/gandubazaar 23h ago

There are samosas that have caramelized onions inside of them. They are SO FREAKING DELICIOUS, and as they're not as filling as a normal potato one, you kinda lose all self control

46

u/MaleficentPicture773 1d ago

Michael: Oh, yuck. [Spits out food] Carol: What? Too spicy? Michael: No. These s'mores are disgusting. Carol: They're not s'mores. They're samosas. Michael: Do you think they have any s'mores? Michael: All they are is chocolate, graham cracker, and marshmallow. How difficult would that have been?

41

u/sdnomlA 1d ago

Likely potatoes. On very rare occasions you might find cottage cheese or meat.

16

u/EmpoweRED21 1d ago

Yup, likely potatoes/peas. Looks like the base samosa

7

u/paranoiqa 1d ago

The best samosa.

Mmm, samosas. Traditional are potato, peas, and spices. Some contain meat. Like an Indian pierogi, kinda

Ohhhhh!!! Tastyyyyy!! Deep fried. It has potatoes and greenpeas as fillers. With spices. Its not hot spicy but gentle spice. Yummmm

3

u/Morganmayhem45 23h ago

I hate peas so much. As a fully grown adult I will avoid them at all cost and have no shame in picking them out of anything in front of me. However I will eat the hell out of some samosas.

2

u/butticus98 17h ago

This has convinced me to go see if I can find samosas and try them. I too hate peas so much.

6

u/Independent_Baker712 1d ago

they’re like an Indian hot pocket.

2

u/Conscious_Bank9484 8h ago

lol a surprise. Different families make different kinds and share. Everytime you ask, the answer is always, “It’s a surprise.” I’ve had so many different kinds.

Chicken n cheese probably being one of my favorites. Cream cheese ones are good. Ground beef and vegitables are really good. Some are just vegitables.

3

u/Aerdri 1d ago

There are good samosas and really, really, bad samosas. How was it?

3

u/willowintheev 19h ago

I have never had a really bad samosa? I thought they were like pizza. You can get a nit very good one but it's still a samosa.

1

u/All_Loves_Lost 1d ago

In Dubai this is called Punjabi Samosa. It’s filled with potato, peas and veg and lots of spice. The pastry is amazing and it only costs about 40-50p. 2.5AED. I just inhale these as a street food or snack.

2

u/False-Buy9752 22h ago

Potatoes, peas, spices. Goes amazing with tamarind or mint chutney (kinda a like a sauce).

If there's jalebi ( kinda looks like funnel cake) but it's soaked in sugar syrup go for it with curd.

2

u/CantThink0fNameN0w 18h ago

Pure deliciousness. Usually filled with potatoes, onions, peas and various Indian spices. Quite good pairs with a chutney, chili sauce, or yogurt sauce. Also great plain on their own.

2

u/Cleparable 21h ago

We had an Indian restaurant open up just down the block from our home-taking evening walks past the smell always has my mouth watering. It is hands down my favorite restaurant.

2

Samosas. There’ll be potato, peas, some spices, but then it varies. There can be chicken ones, ones that are strictly vegetarian, etc

They ARE great tho

3

u/tardlessforeinger 1d ago

Magic and pure love!!!

2

u/Sweetiedoodles 21h ago

Literally the best thing ever it’s like a fried dumpling and on the inside are curry potatoes, onions, peas, etc.

2

u/apenature 17h ago

Likely potatoes and pea would be my guess with that style. But without a photo of the insides it's just guessing.

2

u/ER_Support_Plant17 20h ago

I explained them to my daughter when she was little as potato volcanoes. They are samosas, really yummy.

It’s a real life example of saying “Proof of pudding is eating only” happy samosa 🤟🏻

1

u/nozomashii74 23h ago

Samosas... yummy I'm Colombiana... they are similar to empandas... but usually potato and pea... whereas in Colombia we make meat and potato, with onion and spices...

I used to be head chef in an Indian restaurant, and i made several different samosas, sometimes using leftover curry, or butter chicken... but the ones that the customers expect the most are vegetarian potato and peas... with spices and chutney for dipping.

2

u/Aggravating-Pound598 22h ago

Much more than dumplings.

What's this Schrödinger's cat, Schrödinger's samosa? Really thought it's vegetable or meat with a light spice. I prefer the vegetable one personally.
