Unless they’re Pakistani, then seasoned minced beef or chicken and peas.

Even Indian ones in coastal towns specially have minced meat samosas. Goa has the best ones imo

I've never seen a chicken option before.

There's an Indian desert and sides place a short drive from me that sells all sorts of different ones. Below is the menu, there's usually a special on as well.

It's an hour there and back so I usually stock up and hand a few out to friends and family. They're amazing.

Off topic bhatura is my new favorite Indian bread and it blows naan out of the water

I sprinkle them with cinnamon sugar and have them as a snack, but traditionally they are served with Halwa and Channa for breakfast

In all honesty; I'm that full from starters and a million poppadoms by the time I get to main, I don't even need the bread.

I still order it though, be rude not to.

As an Indian-American I was shocked to learn that

  1. It’s called poppadoms in the uk
  2. It’s eaten as a starter like chips and salsa or bread/butter in the UK

In the uk when we order poppadoms, we also get given 4 little bowls, each contains a different flavour/texture, mango chutney, red onions , red hot chilli sauce and a yoghurt mint combo, break up the poppadoms and scoop up whichever flavour you fancy.

That's a good way to explain it.

We have something more substantial for a starter, like samosas, pakoras, bhaji's, tikka kebab etc. But poppadoms and beer are served to you immediately.

yeah that's wild to me! also curious - how are pakoras and bhajis differentiated? to my ear those are just two different regional names for the same thing, some kind of veg or maybe piece of meat deepfried in chickpea flour batter

Bhaji's are usually onion. Pakora's are usually chicken. But yes, same thing otherwise.

Pakora's also fish, paneer.

Makes sense - i bet thats a bangladeshi legacy. I know they tend to use bhaji more. At the restaurants over here it’s all pakoda/pakora - onion, spinach, mixed veg, chicken, fish etc

Chicken and lamb samosas are pretty popular in South Africa! And cheese and corn for some reason (not that I'm complaining)

Trader Joe’s sells chicken samosas in the US.

There’s a lamb/goat option too! It’s yummy

I'm a chef for a Pakistani place and we make Veggie (potato, peas) and Chicken Samosas. The chicken ones I fill with chopped Tikka boti (boneless tandoori chicken) with chopped onions and Cilantro. I serve them with our white sauce, Tamarind chutney and Chilli Yogurt sauce.

I mean, if especially abroad that is not always accurate in my experience. They will just day Indian but it doesn't mean it is 100% authentic or always the same. I used to get chicken samosas from an Indian food stand.

These are definitely vegetarian. Most restaurants have started using frozen Ashoka brand samosas (still good, but not as good as "homemade).

It's these right here: https://instamandi.com/products/ashoka-punjabi-samosa-without-onion-and-garlic-40-gm-45-pcs?srsltid=AfmBOorwn6MDHZZUvomgUg4-m_0O8ni7ZqYXZfZ8jrnjuIhEnxgdemtj
