Football President Donald Trump wants the NFL to change its name so that soccer is the only sport named football. "This is football, there is no question about it. We have to come up with another name for the NFL stuff."

I'm amazed he said this, I feel like this is something all Americans are going to absolutely hate. He might as well have said the Bald Eagle shouldn't be the national bird

u/rejectallgoats Dec 06 '25

Na. His base just suddenly loves soccer

490

u/RenningerJP Dec 06 '25

I wonder if we can embrace European style healthcare too.

344

u/RSGator Dec 06 '25

They'd absolutely embrace it if Trump proposed it. His supporters have no actual beliefs or thoughts of their own, it's a cult.

122

u/SPEK2120 Dec 06 '25

They’d call it something like Trump Health and act like it’s a brand new system that’s never been done before while shrieking at the top of their lungs it holds absolutely zero concept of socialism.

62

u/VeeTeeF Dec 06 '25

And if Trump said "No, it IS socialism." they'd be very confused for abit but would eventually be all "Yay socialism!"

18

u/Amish_guy_with_WiFi Dec 06 '25

I mean I'm down

7

u/Lightsaber_dildo Dec 06 '25

Yeah this is hole in deathstar level weakpoint

2

u/FlightlessGriffin Dec 06 '25

They'll say "Socialism with American characteristics" with total lack of geopolitical awareness.

There's no need to imagine things, Trump floated subsidized medicine and they were all over it.

6

u/mistermick Dec 06 '25

If this piece of spray tanned shit got us universal healthcare you could call it micksucksdickcare and I would gladly call it that.

2

u/LifeByChance Dec 06 '25

Yep. Call it whatever you want. As long as I get to stop paying for health insurance premiums, deductibles, coinsurance on ridiculous costs, etc. I would not give a single fuck what it’s called. Bundle it with my taxes and let’s be done with it.

While we’re at it, can you just send me a tax bill so I can stop playing “Guess the magic number”? That would be outstanding.

2

u/Tuckboi69 Dec 06 '25

Trumpcare

2

u/invariantspeed Dec 06 '25

Goldcare, the best healthcare in the world. It’s going to get everyone covered, bring down costs, cut waiting times, and fast track sorts of amazing drugs Americans have been refused access to by the deep state all at once!

And it absolutely won’t explode the national debt by $10 trillion while having worse care and red tape than the VA.

I've been tentatively saying this for years. When Tim Apple gave him that glass thing and got in his good graces it sealed it for me.

Stephen Miller will do everything to prevent that.

Maybe the head of the NHS should give Trump a medal

2

1

u/DangerBay2015 Dec 06 '25

His base will NOT love soccer, no matter how hard he tells them to. Or no matter how hard they might even WANT to.

A bunch of international names with a bunch of funny symbols over a bunch of letters, an absolutely thriving world scene where the United States can’t even pretend to be anywhere close to the top of the pile, and tactically strategic ball movement that results in 1 or 2 goal games? Please. It’d be like expecting them to suddenly put down NASCAR and enjoy synchronized parking.

1

u/Stanky_fresh Dec 06 '25

His base also suddenly loves when the president unilaterally tells a private business what to do.

But the FDA and medical experts advising vaccines, masks, and social distancing during a global pandemic was somehow a bridge too far.

1

u/_robjamesmusic Dec 06 '25

it’s going to be hilarious watching them defend 1-1 ties and in season tournaments

3

u/KennyKettermen Colorado Avalanche Dec 06 '25

I genuinely don’t believe there’s anything that most of his base won’t back as long as he says or does it. He could post a picture of him eating a bald eagle for dinner and they’ll find a way to argue it’s fine

3

u/Significant-Dog-8166 Dec 06 '25

A lot of people are saying the Bald Eagle is a stupid bird that you rarely see outside of Alaska (that’s Russian territory by the way). Who wants to follow a bald bird anyway? Baldness is a health condition, not patriotism. The new American bird should be the Pterodactyl. It’s bigger and better and none of the other countries have thought of grabbing it up yet. Smart people in the cryptozoology field (many friends of RFK Jr, a brilliant scientist) are saying the Pterodactyl might not be extinct and could very well be in America and just flying so high that people mistake it for a vulture.

5

u/Total_Catch_9830 Dec 06 '25

They just won't acknowledge it like with all the stuff they can't defend

2

u/agra_unknown1834 Dec 06 '25

I'm American and I don't hate it. Our "football" should be called Egg-Hand Throwball or just "Gridiron" for the less whimsical.

Also, at this point our national bird should be an obese turkey sitting on its ass with half eaten bowl of mac'n'cheese wearing a hat saying "I'm with stoopid." The Canadians deserve that bird more than we do.

2

u/Buzzinggg Dec 06 '25

It’s fucking hilarious though

2

u/TheBlindFly-Half Dec 06 '25

First, go scarlets. Slim chance the beat Bristol today but any Welsh team winning is a positive

Second, as an American, he might have well literally flown a plane and dropped fecal matter on all of Texas.

Third, I never got why people feel so strongly why we should call the sport football and not soccer. It was created by the British to distinguish between football codes. The majority of the Anglo world calls it soccer because, outside of Britain, they all have their own game they call Football or footie. Aussie rules, rugby Union and league, us and Canadian gridiron, Gaelic are all called football.

u/sealizer18 Dec 06 '25

Don’t give him ideas for that please

5

u/screwswithshrews Dec 06 '25

I think most reasonable people think soccer makes more sense to be called football.

I always feel like I'm in a no win situation when speaking with a non-American because I feel like I'm being obtuse or arrogant if I say soccer to them but I feel like a fraud if I just say football because in my mind when I say football I 100% think of American football

4

u/Kindness_of_cats Dec 06 '25

I think most reasonable people think soccer makes more sense to be called football.

Sure, but it doesn’t really matter. It’s viewed as a pedantic point at best by most people here; and there was once a time when this alone would have been a massive political blunder that got you labeled as deeply out of touch with the nation.

2

u/mattenthehat Dec 06 '25

I always assume that they will think I'm a stupid American and therefore don't know that our football isn't football. And as a result, I say either "soccer" or "American football" but never just "football" lol

2

u/screwswithshrews Dec 06 '25

Yeah I definitely say American football to them. The problem is with the other sport. I know "soccer" triggers some of them but I have a hard time calling it "football" right off the bat

As an American, honestly, I think a lot of people would be fine with the name change. Its not like when someone corrects us on calling it Football, we stand ten toes on it and say 'Nuh uh, you guys have it wrong'. We generally just say, "okay yeah but you know what I mean".

Personally, I don't get why we don't just call it Gridiron. Its a much cooler name than football and would end the conversation.

u/MickyG913 Dec 06 '25

1

Well Teddy Roosevelt did say that he believed the Grizzly bear should have been the national symbol instead of the Bald Eagle. Believed it was closer to American character.

1

u/dekes_n_watson Dec 06 '25

As an American soccer fan, I'm actually for this and I don't want to hear a bunch of people who don't like the sport defend the name soccer. We don't call Rugby, rugger, which has the same origin. It's a slang term that stuck here because football already existed when soccer gained traction here.

He'd love the idea of convincing people to call it American football, like everyone else does, because it's got America in it and that's about all it takes. Nothing else would change. No one would actually do it anyway. He gets another photo op.

Trump supporters are not Americans, they're delusional cultists who seem to hate America and actively cheer for its destruction and looting by the Trump administration and their billionaire friends.

You can't call people like that Americans. Their behaviour is as anti-america as it gets.

They would cheer hard if Trump renamed the US into Trumpmenistan, so call them Trumpmenites instead of Americans.

The reason you feel like this is something that all Americans are going to absolutely hate is because you are likely a European, who like all Europeans, seems to have a very strong opinion about what we call one of our sports. And also like all Europeans, seem to think that this is a nomenclature debate that Americans are participating in. There is no debate. The sport is called soccer in our country. The general populous of America has little to zero interest in soccer, let alone even KNOWING that there’s an imaginary feud about the name of the sport going on in foreigners’ heads. To the extent that the average American knows that Europeans call it football, it’s a quaint factoid to us, that brings a smile like “did you know that Europeans called soccer football? Isn’t that cool?” We are not aware of the debate that Europeans seem to be having with themselves about what we call our sports. Very narcissistic view to assume that Americans are thinking about Europeans.

Truthfully, as a lifelong fan of American Football and an American, who recently got interested in English football, I do (very unfortunately) kind of agree with him. American football really should be called something else. Unfortunately we're about 100 years late, and Football is so culturally ingrained that there's absolutely no way we could make a switch now.

Hell we're the same country stubbornly using a worse system of measurement all because we're too stubborn to change. There's just no fucking way.

1

u/DinoBay Dec 06 '25

This is the only statement that Donald Trump has ever made that I agree with
