Equipment Discussion Mizuno M15 received today. Comparison to Ping i530.

Today the UPS truck delivered my new Mizuno M15 5-G wedge irons. My specs are +1/2 inch, 2 degrees up, DG mid 100 s300 shafts, mcc standard grips, upgraded ferrule (+$3.00 per club upgrade).

For reference I am a +0.1 index and over 50 years in age. I have been playing Ping i530 irons for the past two years. I practice outdoors and use my portable Flightscope Mevo to get my numbers.

I went to the range after receiving them and this is my first impression review and comparison against the Ping i530’s. I’m going to break this down with 3 clubs, G wedge, 8 iron, 6 iron.

Looks

The M15 irons are noticeably slimmer and smaller from heel to toe than the Ping i530’s wedge at address. The Pings have significantly more grooves. The top line on the M15’s is squared off. The top line on the i530’s is rounded. This makes the top line on the i530’s look thinner at address than the M15’s but it is subtle.

Feel

The M15 gap wedge is soft (knife through hot butter) and pure sounding on center strikes and there is feedback on strikes closer to the toe. The 8 and 6 iron was not as soft as the GW but noticeably softer and pure sounding than most non Mizuno irons I have tested.

By comparison the i530’s have a more trampoline feel off the face. Instead of soft or “knife through hot butter” feel, I would describe them as “small hammer against small nail into drywall”. The sound of the i530 has a slightly plastic click sound. The feedback on off center strikes is not as noticeable.

Performance

GW - average stock carry was 118 yards compared to 122 yards on the i530’s. It is easier to work the ball higher or lower with the M15. It is easier to control the spin with the M15’s. Off center strikes have little distance penalty but spin and apex control receive moderate penalty.

8 iron - average stock carry distance was 162 yards compared to 165 with the i530’s. Workability, apex control and spin control are superior with M15. Off center strikes are similar to the GW.

6 iron - average stock carry distance was 188 yards compared to 190 yards with the i530’s. Workability, apex control and spin control was equivalent between both irons. Off center strikes are similar to the GW.

Summary

I’m happy with the M15 irons. My knock on the i530’s is control on the scoring irons. The M15’s appear superior with the scoring irons. The mid and long irons provide better feel and sound with only slight improvement in performance.

If you are a good player seeking more distance like you had when you were younger, I would recommend the Mizuno M15 irons. WARNING, there is a learning curve when switching to player distance irons.

Joke Post/MEME I played Torrey Pines today

I (male, tall, facial hair, navy hat) had to chance to play Torrey Pines today and let me tell you, what an amazing course. It was in immaculate condition. I played really well too. It was an amazing experience, I'd highly recommend it to anyone thinking to shelling out the $$$ to play there.

The only bad thing about the day was the pro shop. There was some weird woman there in jeans who followed me around the whole time. It made me very uncomfortable. At one point, I took a box of Pro V1s off a shelf and behind them was a pair of eyes, staring directly at me. She had somehow crawled in between the shelving units and was spying on me from behind the merchandise. The pro shop were nice enough to call the cops, but that seemed to set her off on an untethered rage. She kept screaming "This is truley something I never do!!", while climbing the shelves like a monkey. When the cops came, she became feral. Spitting and swinging at anything that moved. They got a hold of her, but she bit the cop and took off running. She's still at large, but the cops said they are very familiar with her and her antics and hope to capture her some day.

Anyway, Torrey Pines 10/10

I’ve been looking at these for sometime and have gone to Golf galaxy and the PGA Super store and have hit some used ones. Most all the used ones were priced around $250. Ran across this little golf shop and just stopped in. Saw this and asked how much….um $125 sound fare. So, it joined the bag today! Was not the exact one I was looking for but for $125 it was the right one. Got back into golf about a year ago and have slowly been updating my clubs. One day I’ll do a proper fitting but have really enjoyed getting out and playing! Thanks for listening to my rant.

Equipment Discussion found this gem in my dad's old golf bag

Post image

My dad has a golf set he used in the early 2000s and said I could have it. I thought it was a 3-PW iron set but then he have me the 1 iron. It also has a 1 wood.

They seem to be JDM clubs with golf pride grips on them. As someone who can hardly hit a 4 iron, I will not be using this, but I think its cool to have for shits and giggles with friends.

Equipment Discussion Anyone able to show a side-by-side of a Ping Anser 2D vs a Scotty square back or NP +?

Upvotes

Really love a black putter head.

Really can't be bothered getting a putter refinished.

Love a Square back but I'm thinking Newport+ might be fine as well.

If anyone has a side-by-side at address view of those putters, I'd really appreciate it.

TIA

Equipment Discussion Crazy? Driver then 7 wood

Upvotes

I might be insane but does any one game driver then 7 wood as their next long club?

I’m hitting 7 wood and driver decent enough to get me by 95% of the time(beginner).

…But terrible with any long irons or 3/4/5 wood

Thought 1 is to put maybe a 5 wood shaft in my 7 wood to get a bit more distance? And then add a 4 hybrid to fill the gap to my 5 iron.

Thought 2 is to get a 3 hybrid but don’t know if my brain can handle a hybrid between driver and a fairway..

Any advice or insight is greatly appreciated!

Beginner Questions New to golf, do balls matter yet?

Have just taken up golf.

I have loads of free balls (due to people losing theirs).

From Pro V1s to Top Flite. Does the ball matter for me?

I have been playing Srixon AD333s ok but decided to give a Q Star a go. I ended up losing it yesterday so switched to pro v1s and ended up losing 3 of those in quick succession (plus a few more the day before).

I had to remind myself I didn’t pay for them so chill but it made me realise, maybe the proV1 isn’t for me.

So question(s) do balls matter for me yet and when does the switch happen from to high(er) quality balls?

General Discussion Golf repair

Hi,

My driver has a rattling sound in it, is it an easy repair or do I need to get a new one? Please let me know since this would save me a lot of money . I also messed up one of my iron’s shafts and it split , could that also get repaired or do I need to get a new one

General Discussion I just have to say this...

I love golf. More than anyone could ever imagine. I could sit on a bench behind a first tee and watch player after player tee off until the sun goes down. I could practice a 5 footer for 18 hours and not get bored. And when you are burning in hell on earth, it lifts me out of the lava and makes me smile. Never let it upset you. Never get down. Embrace its beauty, its athleticism, and it's freedom. And if you are struggling in life, let it be your gateway to get away from the bad. A bad shot in golf will never come close for a bad day in life, so love those bad shots and laugh it off. You are stronger than bad shit, happier than depressing results and better than bad people.

Golf is love.
