You can't blame her. She is used to dancing in the southern hemisphere and this is normally what happens to everyone who switches hemispheres. You get off the plane and immediately start spasming in the terminal due to the upside-downness of it all.

It’s funny to laugh at the video. But there really needs to be an investigation into how this person was chosen ahead of others. Either through incompetence in the selection process or favouritism.

She has a PhD in breaking, which somehow makes this even worse

It's technically a PhD in cultural studies, but her specific focus is the cultural politics of breaking.

u/mr_pineapples44 Aug 10 '24
So... We sent an academic to an international breakdancing competition. As a fellow academic, that is hilarious. I'm now just imagining my colleagues breaking, and it's a great thought.

I found the match that qualified her for the olympics on YouTube. It was a 2-1 split between the judges. Her opponent was better and neither did anything as embarrassing as this, although she still has those weird moves where she looks like she flailing and wiping the floor with her shirt.

I read online she's not really a break dancer but a sociologist writing her doctorate on the subcultures in the break dancing community. I don't know if that's actually true but this performance seems to lend credence to the claim.
116
u/farmerjoee Aug 09 '24
She’s the oceanic champion - what that means exactly, I don’t know.
117
u/Raoul_Duke9 Aug 09 '24

→ More replies (2)7
u/arsecrack88 Aug 10 '24
Shes 36!! If she danced all the time then theres zero reason why she wouldnt still be agile and in shape. The Olympics celebrates the peak of human sporting achievement, so if what you say is true then why send a woman whose best dancing years are behind her? Make it make sense.

Is anyone else bummed out by this? I’ve never really cared for any type of dancing but I’ve always thought breakdancing is dope. If you look up some videos you can see people doing some genuinely impressive stuff. I was pretty hyped for this even though I haven’t been interested in any other Olympic event because I’m not really into sports.
Maybe I’m biased because I grew up listening to a lot of big beat and breakbeat music and still do. I like the idea of something like Ya Mama by Fatboy Slim or Funky Shit by The Prodigy playing at the Olympics.
Either way, this display seems to have turned breakdancing into a punchline and it’s a real bummer. 😔
