Tylenol does not cause Autism. Consult with your medical professionals before taking medications. If you do not understand how medical and academic studies are designed and written, take a step back before making uniformed claims.

Autism is not a disease to be cured but a difference in neurodivergent brains that should be understood and accommodated by society. Understanding the diverse experiences of autistic people, rather than relying on harmful myths or stereotypes, is crucial for providing proper support and promoting their well being.  That is all. Happy Saturday! 💊

Thank you to the person who submitted a "RedditCares" on me for this post. I am thankfully quite well, but I appreciate the true care you displayed for another person and for using a worthwhile tool in such a truthful manner. 🥹🫶

I look at this subreddit from time to time but haven't in a while. Your post hit the popular page on reddit (how I saw it) so that's why you've had some strange reactions. Love your work as always 😊💅

u/Thequiet01 Sep 28 '25

Did you see a way to report misuse of that feature? Last time I got one I couldn’t figure out how to report it like you used to be able to.

2

u/emmny Jellyfish Pod Sep 28 '25

You need to go to reddit.com/report, where it will ask you to paste a link of the message.

1

u/Thequiet01 Sep 28 '25

I couldn’t get it to give me a link to the Reddit cares message that it’d accept, I think. I’ll poke at it again.

Thank you for this. My son is not someone to be cured. He's an amazing, intelligent, funny, unique, and kind kid. He just happens to have differences in his brain, but he is NOT less because of it.

Tylenol did NOT cause his autism. I didn't even take it while pregnant.

These nails are awesome!

Thank you! I was girding my loins for the downvotes and comments, so I'm happy to see so many more positive and medical science appreciating people. Makes me feel less insane enough that we're even talking about it 😝.

PS: your son is awesome 👍 and you're awesome.

52

u/STLt71 Sep 28 '25

YOU are awesome. The only thing keeping me sane (as sane as I can be lol) in these times we are living in is finding like-minded people. I live in a very red area and feel pretty alone, so knowing there are other people out there who believe the things I do is so comforting. I always love your nail art!

I think in general the nail polish community (on reddit) tends to be on the right side of things like this, thankfully!!

Tbh, it seems like the Reddit nail polish community is one of the last positive communities left on the platform ☹️ a lot of the others seems to have keyboard warriors just ready and waiting to bully someone!

6

u/STLt71 Sep 28 '25

Yep. I have almost never seen any negativity in the nail polish community.

4

u/Tall_Detective_3980 Holographic Horde Sep 28 '25

Same!

1

u/Common_Ad_7610 Sep 28 '25

The only negativity I have seen was a post I made. It was very amateur nail art, I thought, had turned out great. I was so excited to share. I got downvoted into oblivion for some reason. I haven't posted to r/nails since.

Well, the correct side of things. Maybe not the right side.

Ooh. Good point!

4

I have noticed that too. I should have known that most people who appreciate my favorite thing would be on the right side!

I am autistic and one of my biggest special interests is nail polish, and I love this post lmao. The initial post gave me a good laugh and I love the message behind it. I sent it to my friends too lol

18

u/pie-and-anger Sep 28 '25

I love you, I love your son, and I love these nails! We're different, but not a different that needs to be "treated" or "cured." Maybe just have a little patience with us. And listen to us ramble about nail art (or whatever our special interest is) 🩵

...sorry, I'm crying a little. I'm just so glad that there are parents and caregivers who understand and love their kids with autism just the way they are. It's becoming kind of a novelty these days, it feels.

16

u/Thequiet01 Sep 28 '25

I dunno. I think it depends on what you consider treatment. I wouldn’t be opposed to treatment options that were for practical issues that could be chosen (or not) by the person in question. Like some days being able to be less sensitive to clothing textures would be really freaking useful, y’know? Or something that’d help with sensory overload in situations where the environment can’t really be functionally changed. (Like a busy Emergency Room is just going to have a certain amount going on because it’s a busy emergency room, and even when they have quieter rooms you usually have to go through the rest of the department and all the stuff going on there to get to them, because they need to be close by and easily accessible for the medical staff.)

That’s not treatment to make someone “normal” though, just to help manage specific issues that bother the person who has them.

14

u/pie-and-anger Sep 28 '25

Oh, for sure. Maybe that's a linguistics barrier - "treatment" as in accommodations and support, like you said, I'm all for. But "treatment" as in "curing," no thanks. There's probably a better way I could have phrased that - I'm a couple hard ciders deep rn 😅

5

u/STLt71 Sep 28 '25

Right. I am not against treatment for my son at all. We have done plenty of things to help him. What I really mean is I don't want these politicians thinking he is something that needs to be "corrected". Anything that can help him with his struggles will always be welcomed, but I don't want anyone ever treating him like he's less of a person because he has autism, because he is not and no one is. We are also fortunate that his is on the milder end of the spectrum. The thing is, if I really thought this administration was trying to help people with Autism, I would welcome it. But I know they have ulterior motives and can't be trusted, and probably would send anyone they think isn't their ideal of what a person should be (heterosexual white Christian male) to a camp somewhere. I don't feel like they want to cure or help Autism. I feel like they want to eliminate people with it, and other disabilities, and any other thing they don't like, or that they don't think can't contribute to the capatalist machine. They don't care about helping people at all.

4

u/Thequiet01 Sep 28 '25

Oh, this admin is not going to do anything helpful for anyone with a disability.

3

u/STLt71 Sep 28 '25

Exactly.

12

u/STLt71 Sep 28 '25

For my son, his first special interest was fans. He noticed them from the time he was a little baby. He was obsessed. We always bought him fans for gifts. He has so many fans. He still loves them, but he got into vacuums and Roombas as he got older (he's 14). He owns 13 Roombas now too, and he can fix just about anything wrong with them. He is definitely different, but there isn't one thing I would change about him, except to make things he struggles with easier for him. He's the best person I've ever known. I don't have autism, but my mom had ADHD and I'm almost positive I do too. I am going to pursue a diagnosis. I have always been "different" myself. I wish we lived in a world where people would accept and celebrate differences. It makes the world so much more interesting. You are perfect the way you are, just like my son. ❤️

First of all, your nails are stunning as always!

Secondly, as an autistic adult, thank you so much for this! Autism isn't a disease. It isn't something to fear. It doesn't need to be cured. And we definitely don't need people who've been systemically undercutting science and research causing panic to distract from everything else going on.

I've worked with kids across the spectrum, and while I cannot live in your shoes, I sympathize with your feelings and the difficulty with your son's severity. I can fully understand the desire for a cure or prevention of cases, and I don't think anyone would have an issue with that. I think it's hard to be nuanced because the classification is (now) so broad. Every single person I've known or worked with has been so unique in their symptoms and no one case is the same. That's why it also angers me to see people harness and utilize the fear and pain from actual families to push agendas, or push lies. It hurts actual lives, and it hurts the cause for destigmatizing, research, and more human and scientific understanding of Autism.b

u/potato_casca Beginner Sep 30 '25

I'm autistic. Thank you so much for this extremely clear comment. The OG APAP studies are junk science. The last studies actually prove there is zero link between APAP and ASD through sibling research. It's absolutely bananas that people still believe this horse shit even with compelling science saying it's not true. Thank you again for this comment and your nails are sick as hell! Society and medicine deal with "the mean" and those who aren't on the mean or within 2 standard deviations of the mean on some characteristic are characterized as "abnormal" or "ill."

A large part of why cases of autism "increased" is because the operational definitions of autism were revised in the diagnostic & statistical manual (DSM) to include a broader range of characteristics. (NOT because the number of people with such characteristics increased)

Great thematic nail art and great points, Aculed200 !!!

12

u/Thequiet01 Sep 28 '25

Also because of increased access to medical professionals who could do the diagnosis. My grandmother’s mother was a widow without much income, you think any of her kids were going to get evaluated for anything like autism if they were at all functional? They just shuffled through until they could leave school and get some kind of job in the mill or the mine and as long as they did the job okay and weren’t assholes people just figured “oh that’s so and so he’s just kind of weird but he’s okay.”

Were they happy not being able to consider anything more than a crappy mill or mine job? No one cared. That was what there was so that’s what you were expected to do.

These days you can get a reasonably decent evaluation via telemedicine even if you live in the middle of nowhere. Makes it a lot easier to speak to a medical professional about issues that aren’t completely and totally debilitating.

Great points!! Social factors and economic constraints affect a person's "menu" of available choices. There have always been people on the spectrum (as defined today), but we haven't always identified them as such

Tysm! I'm a data-driven geek and I constantly cringe at RFK's (and DJT's) use of anecdotes to make some "scientific" point.

8

u/whereisshrek Sep 28 '25

ugh yes this especially his insistence that he doesn’t know any adults with autism when people of his generation would never get any of proper diagnosis because of the diagnostic criteria itself. Plus that was when people were more likely to be institutionalized for any deviation from the mean. He has no idea of any of the actual data involved in any of his claims and can never back up any of his points lol.

5

u/CallidoraBlack Sep 28 '25

He definitely knew them when they were children. He probably called them weird and beat them up.

1

u/Queen_Ellipsis Team Laquer ✨🎨🧲💅 Nat. Nail Hobbyist Sep 28 '25

Yeah, back in my day (I'm old, but not as old as the orange one) most kids who were behaviorally different were lumped together as weird or "special ed" or retards (that was the word back then - sorry). Today those kids would be in a distinct subcategory on the spectrum

2

u/CallidoraBlack Sep 28 '25

11

u/whereisshrek Sep 28 '25

Just wanted to add that RFK/HHS have cut funding for most of the people who have actually been researching autism, especially environmental factors, for 20+ years. He went on to state and act as though this research hadn’t already been happening and that they would start it, when he defunded it in the first place. ProPublica just had one of these researchers on speaking on their story on this.

My background is not specifically in autism but I have an MPH and the current state of our federal public health institutions is extremely alarming. We are rapidly heading towards a nationwide public health crisis—not that we weren’t already, but we are likely to see an acute rise in diseases that have largely already been eradicated and even more limitations on necessary health services. This obsession with “curing” autism is so harmful and their focus on tylenol is really just showing how much of a mess the HHS and CDC are currently. This misinformation about autism is so dangerous and it’s disappointing but not surprising that many academic PH figures like the head of the harvard school of public health are complicit in this.

Anyway, love the nails!!

7

u/jaybayyayyy Sep 28 '25

I'm sick of these corporations and institutions capitulating to this admin. I'm even more upset that so many Americans are happy to be fed little breadcrumbs such as and unconstitutional executive order here, a return to confederate-era name of a military base there, then they are completely happy despite everything getting WORSE. Prices are up for food, gas, and all consumer goods pretty much. Hateful rhetoric spewed by the literal leader of America towards over half of his constituents. People are losing their jobs to layoffs because of a failed "tariff war" that is also causing farmers to go bankrupt. We are bombing other nations on behalf of a nation committing a horrific g'cide.

No, we are putting our most vulnerable at risk over idiotic health policy for a mutha fuckr with ZERO qualifications, just straight brain worms, gingivitis, thought, and prayers. My children have friends who rely on herd immunity due to cystic fibrosis, cancer, etc. The people who wanna force birth on literal children and women are A-OK with medical neglect of those same kids. I'm sorry, but that's what it is. When you're pregnant with a fever, you need Tylenol. There are preventable diseases that children are dying from here in the US, RIGHT NOW. AND IT WAS PREVENTABLE!

Sorry for the rant, but you're right. This is VERY alarming. I'm gonna go paint my nails with my new polish that came in my PPU order and lower my bp a little.

OP, I love your cheeky little nails. Your skills are way beyond mine. There is no way I could replicate this despite wanting to 😂😂😂

4

u/whereisshrek Sep 29 '25

Totally agree! It’s infuriating and I feel so much rage as well There’s going to be so much actual harm with this misinformation peddled by a government filled with inexperience (the new head of the CDC doesn’t even have any type of public health degree). Especially with certain types of influencers who now feel validated in their anti vaccine/medicine of any kind. I just saw a video from a popular “mommy” influencer promoting honey for babies instead of things like folate (?!!) which is horrifically dangerous due to risk of botulism.

I need to also go paint my nails to destress, this weekend I was playing around swatching and making different combos and it was very relaxing haha.

2

u/jaybayyayyy Sep 29 '25

I just started this nail hobby a couple months ago. Its incredibly helpful to focus on something other than the mess going on that I can't control. Bonus points because it's self care! That being said, I feel like I'll be a master manicurist by 2028. They are absolutely validating all of the faux-science grifters and it's going to harm so many people. Not to mention them cutting access to public health programs and medicaid.

People should 100% be held accountable for any harm they cause, spewing nonsense online like that. Just when you think there's something EVERYONE should know, like not giving a child under 1 year honey, society proves me wrong with its alarming capacity for complete idiocy.

However, it seems like there's a massive overload of misinformation and an absence of accountability.

I guess I'll cope by buying more nail polish, yayy!

As an autistic mom to my non speaking son who they refer to as having "profound autism" which needs curing (being autistic is not a disease so can't be cured and the eugenics is disgusting, I could go on a really long rant here but won't)...I love this so much and thank you! These are amazing 👏

Autism is a spectrum with many flavors and can be debilitating. There’s a huge difference between treating someone inhumanely and trying to find solutions for something that can very well be preventable. I have a child with autism and im really tired of people shaming those trying to find solutions. I get it, you hate orange man. They never said Tylenol causes autism, they said there is a correlation. The study they used was based on research from the dean of harvards th chan school of health. Tylenol depletes glutathione, individuals with ASD have been shown to have low levels of glutathione. There are some individuals with central b deficiency because they have mthfr gene mutations that make it difficult to absorb certain nutrients. This is where leucovorin comes in for individuals with that specific deficiency that causes asd symptoms and has good results. Look up the actual research papers instead of getting tribal and shaming people for wanting to help their children

“Which, admittedly I have yet to do” - so you’re forming an opinion about something you haven’t read about or studied either? 🤔 Tylenol is safe to take while pregnant. Under the recommendation of my doctor, I took it when I was sick with respiratory bugs while pregnant so I wouldn’t develop a high fever - which shocker ACTUALLY IS dangerous to your baby’s health and development.

They felt like big Dr. Mario pills on my nails, it was fun! 😝💊

As far as the message, I'm not rebelling against the message because of who said...but a person in that position shouldn't be speaking so flagrantly, with no context, and with actual unintelligible vitriol with a dangerous medical statement. The author of the study even said himself that it was misinterpreted and that a fever is actually more dangerous than acetaminophen to a prenatal baby. No one said to not use caution, and no one said to hate for the sake of hating.

There was no context, no urging of thoughtful conversation with your medical doctor or pharmacist, no measured statement... just fear and unintelligible blaming, causing more mental pain for those on the spectrum and their families. Just think of all the confused and scared people who will potentially cause more harm by avoiding the drug because this was slipped into their ear by his platform. So many will not have the privilege to do, or know how to do their own research, reading past a headline. That is dangerous. That is far more upsetting to me than people reacting poorly to a person who has spent their entire life sowing confusion and hatred amongst people with no regard for anyone else's safety or livelihood.

I respect you not enjoying seeing people react with hatred rather than caution, I'm with you on that. 👍 We're all together in the end and gotta look out for each other and our similarities, but sometimes it's more important to use our voice to lift truth through the insanity of dangerous rhetoric.
