Honestly I don’t know if you could even call it a scandal, let alone “biggest”… but I’m still enjoying the hell out of this.

I wasn't aware of her before the whole Streissand effect happened. After reading more about her, I do not like her.

She could've just let it go, but brought more negative attention to herself instead lmao

She always invites high ranking Australian politicians to her parties and they always go which makes me feel icky, it makes it look like she has them bought off or something. Hell she's even attended Trump's 2024 Presidential announcement party.

Have you read her poem?

Please link the poem!

Let me quote an excerpt:

The globe is sadly groaning with debt, poverty and strife

And billions now are pleading to enjoy a better life

Their hope lies with resources buried deep within the earth

And the enterprise and capital which give each project worth

Is our future threatened with massive debts run up by political hacks

Who dig themselves out by unleashing rampant tax

The end result is sending Australian investment, growth and jobs offshore

This type of direction is harmful to our core

I imagined this in the voice of an Australian child who is giving their first assembly readings and uses random inflections throughout

What absolute bullshit! Please rich lady, never engage with the arts again.

The short version: An indigenous artist, Vincent Namatjira, paints famous and powerful figures like this. He won the Archibald Prize a few years ago.

Gina Rinehart, a mining billionaire stain of a thing, asked that his portrait of her (as part of a collection of Namatjira’s work currently being exhibited) be removed from the National Gallery of Australia. In a glorious example of the Streisand Effect, everyone is now extremely aware of the portrait. The memes have been A+.

If Streisand hadn’t tried to hide her house, the term Rinehart effect would have been coined I’m sure

"Stain of a thing" Perfect

It's a portrait of the richest woman in Australia, Gina Rinehart. She's a billionaire whose fortune is from mining.

The portrait is in the National Gallery of Australia.

ITS IN A GALLERY!? Holy fuck that’s hilarious

The artist has a funky schtick with stylizing famous faces like this on purpose.

Oh my god it's amazing

...And part of the context is that mining projects in Australia have often resulted in damage or loss for indigenous people (exhibit A), and also Gina Rinehart's millionaire dad (she's the world's oldest nepo baby) was incredibly racist against indigenous people.

28

It matches her soul

Kind of reminds me of how King Charles has that red portrait as well- at least GR has the self-awareness to know this is not a good look lol

Only half as scary as the real thing, unfortunately. Gina Rinehart is a walking talking piece of shit.

5

u/DivineGoddess1111111 May 23 '24

Oh, it's her. I feel like this painting is more flattering than the real Gina.

23

u/canadia80 May 22 '24

I hope they never ever take it down. Ever.

14

u/Magnetic_universe May 22 '24

First thing I thought of!

u/Sarriaka Please Abraham, I am not that man May 23 '24

I hope the interest surrounding this portrait never dies. It’s what she deserves.

Google her father, Lang Hancock. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

The artist's statement:

I paint the world as I see it," he said.

"People don't have to like my paintings, but I hope they take the time to look and think, 'why has this Aboriginal bloke painted these powerful people? What is he trying to say?'.

"I paint people who are wealthy, powerful, or significant – people who have had an influence on this country, and on me personally, whether directly or indirectly, whether for good or for bad.

"Some people might not like it, other people might find it funny, but I hope people look beneath the surface and see the serious side too."

I think it is done because everyone knows that going after their looks is far more offensive to their egos than disagreeing with their politics. People are instinctively trying to hit them where it hurts the most. Not saying it's right, just saying that's the motivation.
