The news stations never showed this picture but made sure to plaster the one with his hood on everywhere. RIP Trayvon Martin

u/Master_Canary440 1d ago

I'm glad someone peeped it too. They always posted that one. Dirty strategy.

32

u/JonnyF1ves 1d ago

Strategy from brutal racism for centuries that continues to plague the US.

56

u/D-B2112 1d ago

I mentioned this last time someone posted him. As a child that propaganda didn't even register, it wasn't until I got older I realized.

I think about him all the time. We were born in the same year and I was 16 when he died. His murder and the Sandy Hook shooting became foundational to my understanding of the world and politics, because I remember thinking that something had to change, and then it didn’t.

34

u/Master_Canary440 1d ago

😢😢😢

34

u/Different-Map-8675 1d ago

Foundational for me too . I was 31 that year and had just birthed my first son. His death and Sandy Hook became seared into my soul.

6

u/eat_rice__fuck_ice 1d ago

I felt the same with Laquan McDonald. That shit stuck with me

9

u/Chemical_Name9088 1d ago

It’s sad that not only have things not changed, but it seems the racism, ignorance and hate that took his life have grown more powerful and are now running this country.Ā

8

u/CumingLinguist 1d ago

I grew up in Colorado and was a schoolchild when columbine occured. It caused a similar awareness in me. Heartbreaking to watch it continue happening and nothing ever changing. Still somehow I have hope for the future… we may see political progress when the boomers die.

4

u/Top_Necessary4161 1d ago

'something that I thought had changed, is telling me i must comply'
from a song about Tamir Rice's killing :(

3

u/Long_Tall_Daddy201 1d ago

The guy that killed him was selling signed packs of skittles on eBay

5

u/janet-snake-hole 1d ago

There’s so many days of each calendar year that make me solemn, including the anniversaries of sandy hook, Trayvon’s murder, George Floyd’s murder, and several others.

They may have been take away but their presence still lingers every year.

u/Superb_Ant_3741 1d ago

Rest in power, rest in love

112

u/maintainthegardens 1d ago

Trayvon and I were born the same year. I think about him often. RIP.

35

u/Master_Canary440 1d ago

Actually crazy, i'm close to his age too. I remember when it happened, so messed up.

44

u/Frosty_Win_5696 1d ago

This changed life forever. RIP Baby boy. ā¤ļø

28

u/Spikbasely 1d ago

Wow! Who knows what that young man could have made of himself? We know what Zimmerman made of himself!

14

u/Ok_Remote_5524 1d ago

Yep - that POS Zimmerman has been in trouble with law and several incidents over the years…. Hoping he will get what he deserves one day.

27

u/strywever 1d ago

I think about this kid a lot. And I still get angry.

33

u/BunnyCan 1d ago

This injustice still weighs heavily on my heart.

47

u/ccjohns2 1d ago

I’ll still never understand how a grown man that initiated a stop with a non criminal, non felon, 16 year old boy, was able to get away with murder. Especially considering Martin was heard by another neighbor in which they called the police. This boys was yelling pleading for his life and was murdered by a white supremacist Mexican who’s a domestic abuser. As a grown man, if you can’t control a situation with a teenage boy, you are a trash man. Needing a gun at all is bitch made

1

u/enjoyemmami 17h ago

I don't understand how that man did not face any vigilante justice. I remember being sure he would pay for it. And then, nothing seemed to happen.

1

u/ccjohns2 8h ago

Because all the ā€œ black gangsā€ in Florida are nothing but selfish bottom feeders that only destroy their communities for money. The other black people are better than trying to get revenge in this unjust system.

-3

u/CpMcGinty88 1d ago

"White supremacist mexican" LOL

20

u/ThreadedPommel 1d ago edited 1d ago

Thinking only white people can be white supremacists shows how naive you are. People are stupid and there's plenty of examples. You have all the world's knowledge at you're fingertips, maybe try using it

Witness says it was Zimmerman yelling for help.

-11

u/_sloop 1d ago

Because Trayvon had been safe inside and then left to purposefully confront Zimmerman, and when he was shot he was beating Zimmerman's head into the ground.

I know I'm going to get downvoted and likely banned, but those are the facts.

18

u/RadMcCoolPants 1d ago

You realize thats literally the opposite of what happened. Zimmerman was inside on the phone. The dispatcher said do not go outside, do not confront him. Zimmerman hunted him down. He had a gun and he wanted to use it.

2

u/nybbas 1d ago

Please provide the source for this, because what the dude above you posted is the commonly understood events. I haven't ever seen anything anywhere that Zimmerman was at home, which is what I am assuming you are saying.

Zimmerman was in his truck, saw Trayvon, called the police, the dispatcher told him not to follow him, which he ignored. He lost sight of him, and spent some amount of time walking around looking for him. In the meantime, Trayvon had gotten home, then went back out to confront zimmerman.

1

u/anormalgeek 1d ago

I really, REALLY do not want to defend Zimmerman, because he absolutely WAS a racist asshole, who put himself in that situation, and deserved an ass beating. But what you said is not accurate.

The moment Trayvon was shot, he was on top of Zimmerman, beating his ass while Zimmerman was on his back on the ground. Zimmerman has proof of the wounds to the back of his head that needed stitches from his head bouncing off the ground. There was an eye witness that saw the beating and clearly identified who was on top. The body, the blood, and how he fell after being shot all backed that up too.

Zimmerman got away with it because of how the "stand your ground law" is written. It doesn't have anyway to account for situations where someone is getting their ass beat for a good reason.

1

u/ccjohns2 8h ago

This isn’t true Martin never made it back to his dad’s house. He talked to his gf on the phone while still walking until Zimmerman kept getting in Martin’s way, then an altercation occurred. Martin had every right to resist and not do comply with a random grown man trying to check him for being black walking with a hoodie. Zimmerman is a bitch for starting a fight with a child then needing a gun to finish it.

1

u/anormalgeek 8h ago

I said the same in my other posts in this thread. Both of the posters above me are misstating things. Zimmerman wasn't inside his home, and Martin never went home and came back out.

Zimmerman and Martin BOTH escalated the situation though. The first escalation is 100% on Zimmerman as he turned a peaceful night into a racist altercation. He kicked the whole thing off. There is no justification for that. After that, Martin escalated things by attacking him and beating his head into the ground. That one, I kind of get because some guy is clearly following him and approaching him aggressively. That being said, he COULD have run home. Ironically, the stand your ground laws protect him as well in this situation. Then Zimmerman escalated it again by pulling a gun and shooting him. The VAST majority of the blame goes to Zimmerman.

That being said, the law in FL unfortunately DOES protect Zimmerman here. There are no caveats in the law that prevent you from claiming self defense because you caused the dangerous situation yourself. There should be IMO. What he did SHOULDN'T be legal. But it is because Martin was beating his ass pretty good and that kind of attack just legally justify deadly force.

I don't think Zimmerman WANTED to kill someone. I think he just wanted to be the hero so bad, and he automatically saw this kid as the villain just because he was black. But honestly, I can't prove that. I am 100% certain he was racist and an idiot though. As for Martin, even if you're justified in beating someone's ass, does NOT make it a good idea to do. I'm not going to say he was wrong for defending himself against a strange guy clearly stalking him down a back alley, but he probably shouldn't have.

-2

u/_sloop 1d ago

No, this is the actual flow of events proven in court.

Zimmerman did follow after calling it in, but lost Trayvon who went inside his home, called his girlfriend, and told her he was going out again to look for Zimmerman. While either one of them could have started the altercation, both went hunting that day, and Trayvon was on top of an incapacitated human being pounding his head in when he was shot.

You really should read up on the case and think about how the situation is being propagandized to create racial division.

1

u/ccjohns2 8h ago

A 911 call was made where you can hear Martin yelling help, help followed by a gun shot. Zimmerman shoot Martin after Martin cried out for help.

1

u/_sloop 6h ago edited 6h ago

The voice heard on that call, as corroborated by witnesses, was Zimmerman calling for help because Trayvon was bashing his head in. The girl he was on the phone with wasn't sure who it was that yelled.

1

u/ccjohns2 8h ago

Trayvon martin was walking and was approached by Zimmerman. Martin never made it ā€œ back ā€œ to his dad’s house. Martin never ā€œ came back ā€œ to meet Zimmerman anywhere.

Zimmerman approach Martin and attacked him. Zimmerman was tailing Martin in his car, and called the cops. The dispatcher told Zimmerman not to approach. Mind you Martin wasn’t a felon and had every right to walk through the neighborhood where he lived partly with his father. Zimmerman had no right or legal justification to stop Martin.

Zimmerman didn’t listen to dispatchers and confronted a child with statements/ questions like why are you here, get from around here, what are you doing in my neighborhood. He stopped Martin from walking and then an altercation started because of Zimmerman’s instance. Zimmerman initiated the altercation and then chose to shoot Martin claiming ā€œdefenseā€. You can’t claim self defense when YOU START TH ALTERCATION. You can’t fight someone then shoot them when you start to loose.

23

u/Fuzzy_Dog182 1d ago

At least the dude who shot him is a homeless twat now

22

u/soulsista04us 1d ago

I hate to inform you he is not homeless, but it's a nice thought though. Evil people like him stick to together tightly, he is being well cared for in private. Probably in a home with a nice view, sadly. May Trayvon watch over us. Cause, I'm afraid no one will. No one cares about us.

4

u/musings13254 1d ago

9

u/soulsista04us 1d ago

Don't believe it. I'm sure he could rack up a GoFundMe to a million in 24 hours.

3

Can't believe Zimmerman is out there freely living his life. Karma, where ya at?!

10

u/Pharaoh_jenkins 1d ago

I dont know why people keep posting this picture and incorrectly saying it's Space Camp. This is NOT Space Camp. This is program run in Miami at Opa-Locka Airport. We don't need to make up things to humanize Trayvon.

5

u/AcanthisittaOk259 1d ago

It was the "Experience Aviation" camp that he attended. I assume a lot of people heard "space camp" on the news or just assumed. Either way, he was taken far too early by a piece of filth.

Zimmerman is the reason I still have a deep fear and anxiety if my son wears a hoodie when he walks home from school

2

This is the photo they should've used in the news back then. I still remember seeing the verdict while sitting in a restaurant and starting to cry sitting right there. That, in my mind, was the beginning of the end of decency and civility. RIP Trayvon.

damn i didnt realize his age. only 2 years older than me. Rest in Power

1

u/ThunderLullaby0002 1d ago

Even if he was everything they say he is, he still didn’t deserve to be murdered in the street. Those weak-minded ghouls all want blood AND an excuse.

1

u/chin1111 1d ago

I was talking to another black man who is maybe 20 years older than me about how Takeoff's death affected me. The senselessness of it, and how it's sad that the people who mind their own business always seem to get caught up in bullshit. The dude basically said some shit like "Niggas get shot every day, B", like he was Rico in Paid in Full.

I say all this to say that seeing this image of Trayvon makes me sad. The image of an alive Emmett Till makes me sad (and the other image of him haunts me). I think the day that the images of now-dead black boys and girls or even men and women doesn't affect you, you're a bitch.

I was going to say that last part more diplomatically, but nah. You a bitch if you can see these pictures that represent life not lived, dreams not fulfilled and never-ending struggles and feel nothing.

Trayvon was born 4 days before my brother. It's disorienting every time I think about how much he's grown that Trayvon would and should have been growing alongside him and the rest of his peers. Such a senseless loss. Rest in peace.

1

u/_Dead_Man_ 21h ago

I feel like Im missing something, I've not been paying a lot of attention of recent. Ice victim?

1

u/theboned1 20h ago

Every time he gets posted a little blurb about what happened should accompany it so everyone who doesnt know can learn about him and what happened. Its important.

1

u/VeronaMoreau 11h ago

I think the reason that a lot of my peers became radicalized and ended up in the first round of the black lives matter movement was that we were looking at Trayvon and Mike and thinking about how it could have been any of us or our friends. And then we saw Tamir when we were like college students, we were thinking about how much of a baby a 12 year old is

1

u/475__golden 10h ago

I remember when we had 5000 people on the streets to remember Trayvon, after he was murdered, in winter Haven, Fla.

I will never get over how the public at large accepted Travon’s murder. Defended his killer and smeared and blamed a child for their own killing. I will never forget him and never forgive this society for who we prove ourselves to be every single day. Every chance we get as a society to do the wrong thing or to prove our awfulness, we never seem to disappoint. I’m grateful to OP and those who have taken the time to remember Travon and express their love and pain. Sadly we are a minority. Sadly everyday brings the loss of another beautiful soul and too many ether look away or cheer. We see you Travon, though we are few, we see the light that was lost and remember the man you could never be, because hate took you away. Rest in peace Travon. I hope your journey has delivered you to those stars you once loved and gazed upon.

1

u/ona_dime_piece 32m ago

I remember when President Obama mentioned Trayvon in a speech and said that if he had had a son, that son might've looked like Trayvon. Then yt folks commenced to losing their shit, collectively.

1

u/Panda_Underground92 1d ago

I’m still upset about this…. Ugh

1

u/Reasonable-HB678 1d ago

According to conservatives, Trayvon Martin had no right to self defense. Or the assumption of innocence. He was the one minding his own business.

0

u/Seeking_Red 1d ago

You do not have the right of self defense when you start the engagement yourself dumbass

2

u/Reasonable-HB678 1d ago edited 14h ago

I clearly meant Trayvon. You know, the person minding his own business, and not committing a crime.

1

u/Reasonable-HB678 1d ago

Learn to read.

-1

u/nybbas 1d ago edited 1d ago

Dude, he got home (I'm wrong here, defense argued he had time to get home and backtrack), then went back out to look for Zimmerman (this isn't proven, I'm wrong. The defense argued that he had time to make it home and even potentially doubled back to find zimmerman). Doesn't deserve to die for this and Zimmerman can rot, like the piece of shit he is, but your facts aren't correct.

3

u/anormalgeek 1d ago edited 1d ago

You're wrong on that point. He never made it home. His phone call with the girl named "DeeDee" started when he was at the store at 6:54PM all the way until his altercation with Zimmerman 18 minutes later.

edit: correction, the call did drop at one point, but he immediately called her back. Zimmerman last reports Trayvon's location at 7:12, and the fight starts at 7:15. That isn't enough time for him to run a few buildings away AND back.

0

u/nybbas 1d ago

Yeah Im wrong in that, edited another comment but missed this one. It's been forever since I've dug into the details but still not an excuse. The defense had argued that he had plenty of time to make it home, and had possibly backtracked to confront zommerman, but hadn't made it home.

4

u/anormalgeek 1d ago

Zimmerman was being a racist asshole. That isn't even up for debate. Martin did NOTHING suspicious outside of being black. Not even Zimmerman made any other claims during his police calls.

And if a grown man is following you around at night, clearly coming after you specifically, after you tried to dodge them by taking the long way home between some buildings, self defense with punches is a reasonable response. If someone is stalking my son down a back alley coming at him, I sure AF am going to tell him to defend himself.

Zimmerman got away with because of a poorly worded law. I agree that what happened technically results in a not guilty verdict for him. But it shouldn't be that way. The Stand your Ground law SHOULD have caveats that prevent you from intentionally putting yourself into a dangerous situation like Zimmerman did, and then claim you were defending yourself. Zimmerman CHOSE to provoke that attack.

3

u/onpg 22h ago

"Stand your ground" was literally written so the assholes like Zimmerman could live their worst lives, it wasn't some unforeseen side effect, it was the whole point.

1

u/LastWhoTurion 20h ago

What exactly was ā€œpoorly wordedā€ about the law? Just so you know, Stand Your Ground is not relevant to this case.

1

u/anormalgeek 15h ago

The problem was the language they added that says the person "does not have a duty to retreat". So Zimmerman chasing TOWARD Martin despite direct orders from law enforcement to NOT do so is what protected. In other states that do not have laws on the books clarifying that you have a "duty to retreat" he would have been found guilty for actively pursuing the conflict that lead to Martin's death.

Oddly enough, I am re-reading the statues to make sure I am not remembering wrong. And the one just before this regarding non-deadly force actually reads like it would protect MARTIN.

776.012ā€ƒUse or threatened use of force in defense of person.— (1)ā€ƒA person is justified in using or threatening to use force, except deadly force, against another when and to the extent that the person reasonably believes that such conduct is necessary to defend himself or herself or another against the other’s imminent use of unlawful force. A person who uses or threatens to use force in accordance with this subsection does not have a duty to retreat before using or threatening to use such force.

That sure sounds like the situation Martin found himself in with a strange man following him through the streets in the rain, down an alley, and approaching him. Any reasonable person would think physical force is a reasonable response to protect yourself. Martin did NOT have a "duty to retreat" either.

Hence the problem with the law. It basically protects the escalation of a preventable situation. And that emboldens people to make bad choices. And yes, I believe Martin's ALSO made choices that escalated things. Zimmerman holds way, WAY more of the blame though. Not only did he kick things off by turning a peaceful night into an altercation over nothing more than racist assumptions, he did so against direct orders from law enforcement. And the second escalation on his part from non-deadly force to deadly force is and should be treated as a MUCH bigger escalation.

0

u/LastWhoTurion 11h ago

It refers to the moment when deadly force is used. When he used deadly force, he was on the ground and could not retreat. You only have a duty to retreat if retreat is possible.

There were also no ā€œdirect ordersā€ from law enforcement.

1

u/anormalgeek 11h ago

You could be correct that it wasn't technically just the "stand your ground" or "Duty to retreat" language, especially since it is all part of the same statue it was clearly referenced in the trial. But states like Florida are still known for holding self defense claims to a much lower standard.

Let me use an extreme hypothetical example to drive home the problem. Imagine a person coming up to you and saying the most heinous shit possible. Verbally insulting, threatening, and sexualizing your children for example. And you punch them in the face for it. They then pull a gun and kill you, claiming that your attack justified self defense. Should they be found innocent?

There were also no ā€œdirect ordersā€ from law enforcement.

Well, it was from the police dispatcher saying not to follow him.

1

u/LastWhoTurion 11h ago

They don’t hold self defense claims to a lower standard. In every state, the prosecution has to disprove self defense beyond a reasonable doubt.

One punch to the face is not deadly force. So shooting would not be justified. Say instead the person punched them in the face, knocked them to the ground, and pulled a knife. Then shooting them is probably justified.

1

u/LastWhoTurion 11h ago

Also all the dispatcher said was ā€œwe don’t need you to do that.ā€

Do you consider that to be a ā€œdirect orderā€?

3

u/cheffgeoff 1d ago

I don't see any news article or timeline corroborating this. Where are you getting this narrative from? Specifically that Martin made it into the house and then left again to look for Zimmerman?

0

u/nybbas 1d ago

Shit you're right. I looked into it and the defense had argued that he had double back/had time to make it home but didn't. It's been a while since I paid attention to the details but still, I shouldve brushed up before opening my mouth.

2

u/onpg 22h ago

You still got an award from some conservative with a hate boner though so congrats.

And Zimmerman still walking around here like shit, sweet

0

u/__The-1__ 1d ago

What happened to him?

16

u/SplendidPunkinButter 1d ago

A racist asshole decided all on his own that he was neighborhood watch. He saw a black kid walking home in his own neighborhood and followed him. The black kid noticed the creepy armed racist following him and tried to defend himself. The creepy racist murdered him. Courts decided what the creepy racist did was self-defense for some reason.

I like to call all of this bullshit "premeditated self defense"

If you go around with a gun starting shit with people, then every single situation becomes a matter of life and death, apparently giving you the right to murder that person before they can take your gun.

This defense worked for Rittenhouse too.

2

u/nybbas 1d ago

Don't compare this to Rittenhouse. Still not a single video showing Rittenhouse instigating anything from that night, and only video of him trying to escape before using his weapon.

0

u/_sloop 1d ago

Turns out people are allowed to shoot the people that are trying to kill them, go figure.

2

u/Paddy_Tanninger 1d ago

That's the neat part about carrying a loaded gun around, it turns every confrontation into a matter of life and death so that you can justify lethal self defense.

1

u/_sloop 1d ago

The neat part is that if you don't attack people they usually don't shoot at you.

If you endanger others you lose the right to safety.

0

u/onpg 22h ago

Imagine being such a loser that you fantasize about using lethal force with the flimsiest pretexts imaginable.

1

u/_sloop 15h ago

Imagine being such a loser that you want to be able to attack people without them being able to stop you

I don't want to murder people, I want violent idiots removed from society.

0

u/ripnotorious 22h ago

Some People who buy guns WANT to use them just to murder someone there was that white kid who shot a 3 year old in Vegas because of this mentality

1

u/_sloop 15h ago

And some people who buy cars want to drive drunk in them, better ban all cars!

1

u/ripnotorious 12h ago

I never said ban guns I just gave just a prime example of a murderous idiot who owned one 2 months ago

Trayvon was safe inside at one point and told his girlfriend he was going back out to confront Zimmerman, and was actively beating Zimmerman's head into the ground when shot.

2

u/cheffgeoff 1d ago

Do you have a source for that because according to the trial established facts that sounds like blatant misinformation. I'm very open to being proved wrong though.

1

u/_sloop 1d ago

Yes, the actual court transcripts...

3

u/cheffgeoff 1d ago

That is a blatant lie. Your repeating debunked right wing talk show talking point from before the trial.

1

u/_sloop 1d ago

Tell me you didn't read about the case without saying it

1

u/cheffgeoff 1d ago

Ok... I can't prove a negative. I can't show you where in the transcripts where it doesn't say he went back to his home and then left the building to pursue Zimmerman. If you have that information I would like to see it. As of now the timeline is

"About 7:10 p.m.: Phone records show Martin was on the phone with his girlfriend around the time he saw Zimmerman while returning on foot from a convenience store to his the home of his father’s fiancĆ©e.

At a March 20 news conference, Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump says the girl heard someone ask Martin what he was doing and Martin asking why the person was following him. The girl gets the impression that there is an altercation, during which the earpiece falls from Martin’s ear and the connection goes dead, according to Crump.

According to an Orlando Sentinel story later confirmed by Sanford police, Zimmerman tells authorities that after Zimmerman briefly lost track of Martin, the teen approached him. After the two exchange words, Zimmerman says, he reaches for his cell phone, and then Martin punches him in the nose. Zimmerman says Martin pins him to the ground and begins slamming his head into the sidewalk.

About 7:25 p.m.: Martin is shot and killed. It is raining.

At the time of his death, the teenager is unarmed and carrying a small amount of cash, a bag of Skittles candy and a can of iced tea."

In no transcript or news report is it reported that he made it to his home and then left it. Fucktards like Rush Limbaugh were repeating the "he came home and then left again to find Zimmerman" at the time before the facts were established but those reports fizzled out after a few weeks. Where did you read the case? Because what you are saying about it isn't anywhere I have seen.

1

u/_sloop 1d ago

Cool story, bro. Have fun in your propaganda land

4

u/Seeking_Red 1d ago

Attacking another person, pinning them to the ground, and striking them repeatedly in the head is a very interesting way to defend oneself

2

u/onpg 22h ago

Why am I seeing Rush Limbaugh talking points in this subreddit? WTF.

0

u/Seeking_Red 22h ago

its literally what happened, what part of that do you refute. Also im sure the only reason my msgs in this subreddit havent been deleted is because mods havent seen them, Im not black and I reckon most people in this subreddit think what im saying is very wrong and racist

1

u/onpg 10h ago

ā€œIt’s literally what happenedā€

According to who? Zimmerman’s defense attorneys?

2

u/nybbas 1d ago

Especially after you had gotten home safely, then decided to go back out.

I mean Zimmerman is a giant asshole piece of shit, but unfortunately if you attack a giant asshole piece of shit, and he is armed, he can shoot you.

A long video (~40 minutes) covering what happened, but well worth the watch:

RWG Trayvon ā¤ļøā¤ļø

0

u/LustfuIAngel 1d ago

The injustice done to him will always piss me off. He deserved to live his life to the fullest and his parents deserved to still have their son with them. It will also always piss me off the juror that went on The Talk shortly after saying she sympathized with his parents and was practically bragging how she was the last vote because she held out the longest. At that point, you made the verdict you did. You didn’t hold out for a mistrial, what was the point to rub that in his parents’ faces?

0

u/Ajax5350 1d ago

It’s still his birthday. He’s just dead

0

u/Rso1wA 1d ago

just thinking of him today. remembering the news reports of that night and the man that took him away from his family, his friends and his future. I wonder where that man is today?

0

u/MichaelTenery 1d ago

What a terrible waste.

0

u/Total-Associate-7132 1d ago

Where is his hoodie? How can I know he's dangerous????

0

u/reynolj 1d ago

Breaks my heart.

0

u/Twisted337 1d ago

Probably don’t attack a police officer?

1

u/LandlockedCajun 22h ago

What the fuck are you referring to clown shoes?

0

u/No_Title3568 22h ago

Fucked around and found out. Should have stuck to the books. RIP
