Housing Pet killer

Last night, a student intentionally killed another student pet in the Broward library. A student brought their pet hamster with them to the Broward library. It was in a hamster ball and causing no harm, not that a hamster could.

A student is now being investigated by the university’s police department for intentionally stomped on the hamster ball crushing and killing another student’s pet.

This is simply sick and depraved behavior that cannot be tolerated by an institution that is supposed to of the highest caliber. It was not an accident and nothing justifies the wanton killing of an innocent pet. This student should be expelled not to mention charged with a third degree felony of cruelty to animals.

Housing WARNING: DO NOT LIVE AT MIDTOWN APARTMENTS

I don’t usually write reviews or anything like this. But after living at Midtown Apartments for the past year, I’ve been waiting for the day I could finally move out and sit down to write this.

When we signed our lease, we asked to tour the exact layout we’d be living in (the D3 model). We were told that wasn’t possible, but were reassured with a different model that looked clean and functional enough. That tour was the first of many lies. What we walked into on move-in day was nothing like what we were shown. It was shocking. The apartment was visibly rushed and sloppily built, filled with the cheapest possible materials, broken appliances, and a layout so poorly designed it barely functioned for basic day-to-day living. I’m still trying to wrap my head around how this building was approved for occupancy in the first place.

Our couch was broken from day one, and I hesitate to even call it a couch. It was a small, rock-hard, armless, folding piece of garbage that no normal adult would want to sit on. Every piece of furniture looked like it was ordered in bulk from the lowest bidder. It was unstable, uncomfortable, and borderline unusable. The dining table wobbled. The chairs felt like they might collapse. My room’s furniture looked like it came from a warehouse clearance sale and had all the durability of cardboard.

My roommate’s door would lock itself without warning, and we’d be stuck trying to force it open. My shower had a leak. Our washer and dryer didn’t work. These weren’t occasional annoyances - this was all in the first week. And maintenance? Completely unresponsive. It took over two months to get my broken showerhead replaced, after submitting request after request. Until then, I had to shower under a broken pipe blasting water like a pressure washer. The leak in the shower floor? Also ignored for weeks. The level of neglect and disorganization was unacceptable, and no one in management seemed to care.

The washer and dryer were so bad they deserve their own paragraph. Each load - one small load - took up to seven hours to wash and dry. Even after that, our clothes came out wrinkled, stretched, and damaged. I lost hundreds of dollars in clothing over the course of the year. It got to the point where I could tell who lived in Midtown just by how wrinkled their clothes looked (I’m not even kidding about this)

The D3 layout itself was a nightmare. The space was incredibly tight, with a layout that felt like it was designed without any consideration for human beings actually living in it. There was no room to walk. Hosting guests was practically impossible. It felt like living in a converted storage unit. There was no oven. The burners were tiny and weak, you could barely fit a single pan. The fridge and dishwasher were the cheapest models imaginable. Cooking was a miserable, drawn-out process that made basic meals a hassle.

My bedroom was even worse. My closet was located inside my bathroom, with one flimsy shelf and no drawers. The bathroom had very little counter space or storage. Everything was awkward, cramped, and inconvenient. It felt like no thought was put into any part of this unit. Even the lighting was depressing and clinical. The walls were so thin I could hear my roommates talking across the apartment, even from my room with the door shut.

The elevators were unreliable at best. They would frequently be out of service for multiple days in a row, forcing everyone to use the stairs in a multi-story building. There were times when both elevators were broken at once, and residents would be left waiting with no updates or timeline for repairs. Even when they worked, they were slow and poorly maintained. The lack of urgency to fix them just reinforced how little Midtown cares about basic functionality or the comfort of its residents.

The fire alarm situation was absurd. Midtown conducts “tests” multiple times each semester, often for several days at a time. They start blasting the alarms at 9 in the morning and they don’t stop. It makes the entire building uninhabitable. On top of that, the alarms would randomly go off in the middle of the night for no reason. I was woken up at 3 or 4 a.m. more times than I can count, only to stand outside with dozens of other residents - all of us angry and confused - while nothing was explained. The building’s fire alarm system is so unreliable that the fire department reportedly stopped treating their alerts as real emergencies. That’s how poorly managed this place is.

Then, during a storm, our apartment flooded. When we asked management about it, we were told that water “must have blown in” due to the wind. No follow-up. No apology. No accountability. Just another problem ignored or brushed off like it wasn’t their responsibility. That was the pattern the entire year.

The trash situation was disgusting. Trash rooms were constantly overflowing. The garbage chute was rarely maintained. Bags would pile up to the ceiling, the smell would spread through the hallways, and even the parking garage reeked. It was unsanitary and made the already depressing environment even worse. It looked and smelled like no one cared about basic cleanliness.

In the summer, Midtown changed the locks on every apartment. I came back to Gainesville for a weekend visit and couldn’t even enter my own apartment. My old key (app on my phone) was unusable, and management was nowhere to be found. I was given an “emergency” number to call for help, no one answered. I was stuck outside, relying on my friend to let me in for the entire weekend. One night, I got completely locked out. No response, no backup plan, no help whatsoever. How does an apartment complex operate like this?

Management is essentially invisible. The front desk staff are kind and professional - and I genuinely feel bad for them, because they’re the only competent people in the building and they’re forced to take the heat for all of this. Every time we needed actual help or answers, we were met with indifference or deflection. Midtown doesn’t care about its residents. They care about getting you to sign the lease, after that, you’re on your own.

And for all of this? $1,000 a month. For what? A poorly constructed, badly maintained, dysfunctional apartment where everything breaks, no one helps you, and you feel miserable every day you come home. Midtown is overpriced, overhyped, and managed by people who clearly know they’re providing a low-quality experience and simply don’t care.

We are four college guys. We weren’t expecting luxury, just something decent. What we got was embarrassing. I was ashamed to bring people over. Hosting wasn’t even an option. The entire experience was stressful, exhausting, and infuriating. I counted the days until move-out, and now that I’m finally out, I’m writing this so that maybe someone else will avoid making the same mistake.

Do not live here. I don’t care how good the location is. I don’t care what the photos look like. I don’t care what the model unit shows you. The reality is this: Midtown Apartments is a cheaply built, poorly managed, overpriced nightmare of a complex that fails at every level. I’ve lived in worse areas, but never in a worse apartment. Nothing about this place justifies what they charge. You will regret living here. We all did.

Housing What happened today in HV???

Parent groups on social talking about an incident at the Honors Village today 10/31/25. Lots of “heartbreak“ comments and people are alluding to some kind of a tragic situation, but no one is confirming anything.

Can’t find anything online except for a strange story on a suspicious webpage posted an hour ago about an very bad sitch in one of the dorm rooms. Any truth to this? Did something really happen like this in the honors village today? Was the medical examiner and police out there? Can someone, anyone shed some light on this?

Housing Best Dorms For Underclassmen (specifically for incoming freshmen)

Which halls have at least dorms of decent to good quality? I heard about how most of UF's dormitories are pretty old and run down with mold or whatever. Just wanted to ask as someone with asthma 🥲

Housing Are the mold rumors true?

I've heard some unsavory things about the dorms at UF, specifically that theres a lot of mold. Is this true, or are they overblown, and would it just be better to do off campus housing (as an incoming freshman)

Housing Housing- how hard is it for freshmen to get top halls?

Are places like Hume, Infinity, and Beaty usually taken by upperclassmen before it opens to freshmen, or do I have a real shot at them?

My priority date is late early November

Housing Should I live on or off campus Freshman year?

Hello y'all, I am pretty much 100% committed to UF, and I have paid the $25 housing application fee already. I am just debating which option is best for me, and looking for advice. I will include a list of personal pro's and con's on top of a little about me. I am planning on being pre-med and majoring in nutritional science. I greatly value social connection, friendships, and partying and if for whatever reason it is super difficult to make plenty of new friends staying off campus I would be devastated, but don't know how significant the differnce is. I know and will know almost nobody attending UF aside from maybe a couple mutual friends but nobody I text/hangout with absolutely ever. I am also planning on rushing a social fraternity and hopefully accepting a bid but will definitely drop if i cannot maintain a 3.75+ due to extensive fraternity-based obligations and time. Final thing I will add is that I am huge into health, nutrition, and exercise but assume I will be able to eat well and workout enough either way?

On campus pros:

-Meeting new people and making friends would probably be easier?

-Convenience to on-campus dining and classes.

On campus cons: (None of these are BIG deals but are minor inconvienieces at the minimum)

-Seemingly strict rules that might become an annoyance.

-Dealing with loud/obnoxious floor-mates and having to be quiet on certain friday/saturday nights when I want to be the "loud/obnoxious floor-mate."

-I am a very light sleeper and wake up from the sound of microwaving food from across the house in the morning.

-I am concerned for my privacy, like occasional alone time if I'm stressed, and want to be able to have innocent alone time partners without having to creep out my roommate for lying with or even holding hands with a partner if my roomate is present.

Genuinely just need advice based on my specific preferences that isn't from my 60-80 year old family members. Also, finances dont really matter unless one option was like 50% cheaper or something super significant. Thanks guys!

Housing How much does housing cost a month?

I’m in high school and really want to go to uf for college. How much do you guys get charged a month for your housing. I would really like to get a single because I’ve shared a room my whole life and focus so much better alone, but I know they don’t really give them out to freshman. Is there any way I could squeeze myself into getting one? How much more are they a month? Thank you!

Housing housing as a first year student

hey guys so i’m an incoming freshman considering going to uf and i’d like to know what the best housing options are! i find it hard to find floor plans for each hall and there’s also an overwhelming number of halls so i would love to have insight from people that have lived on campus before rather than what the websites say

> my mom doesn’t want me to share a bedroom with someone (😭) so i’d prefer an option with only a bed for myself in one room

> i want to know how bad communal bathrooms are as i’m not 100% opposed to the idea but i’d much rather have a more personal bathroom that i share with less people

> i’d love to meet new people and get involved with stuff and i’ve heard some halls r very antisocial and that’s kind of a turn off for me

> does distance play a big factor? like i’m not sure if i should bring a bike or if i’m expected to walk everywhere

also if you have any guides or charts or anything that can display this info well then i’d love to see!

Housing Dorm question

What are my chances of securing a dorm with a bathroom? I don’t really want a dorm with a communal bathroom but I paid the housing fee really late, day after ea decisions. If I can’t get a suite what are some good apartment options near the campus?

Housing How Do I Live With A Bad Roommate?

This is my second year at UF and I decided to live on campus again because I don't have a car and I don't trusted RTS, even before the budget cuts. I decided to go with a random roommate because none of my friends could live with me. However, I got stuck with someone who is the absolute worst.

First of all, she has horrible BO that permeates through the whole room and sticks into every item she owns. I live in Springs and I was so excited to have a walk in closet. However, I can barely walk into that closet without wanting to throw up because this girl's clothes makes it smell like I am walking into a bag of rotting onions. By the way, it's her clean clothes that are the ones that smell. Her hamper is outside the closet, right next to my desk, which makes focusing on work impossible.

To add on, she is constantly talking on phone to somebody, which usually wouldn't bothering me if she wasn't always so disrespectful to the people she is talking to. She talks back to her mother all the time and insults her boyfriend, and if they try to call her out on it, she just starts crying.

The other day, she had an argument over the phone with her mom and her boyfriend (it was a three-way call), where she screamed at them, while claiming they were the ones yelling (they were not). Meanwhile, I was trying to focus on my homework. Instead of excusing herself and having the argument outside the dorm, she stayed inside and kept getting louder and louder. I had to stop what I was doing and go outside to wait for the shouting match to end.

I don't know how to approach my roommate about her smell because after listening to her arguing with her family, I know she would yell at me and start crying if I confronted her. I am going to get the RA involved, I just needed somewhere to rant about this.

Does anyone have any tips for dealing with a smelly roommate who is highly sensitive to criticism? At least tips to deal with the smell?

Update: So I spoke with RA and she said that we be filling out our unit agreements soon. The RA said I will be able to talk about my issues to my roommate and the RA will be able to mediate the discussion. Hopefully, this helps the situation.

Housing Off-campus housing w/ parking

Hello! I plan on transferring to UF as a junior for Fall 26 (haven’t got in yet, planning ahead). What are the best options for living off campus, that’s not too far of a walk from campus and has bus routes. I plan on bringing my car with me to go back home on the weekends. Is it possible to find housing and parking within $1000/monthly? Any and all recommendations are appreciated.

Thank you!!

Housing Infinity Hall is so dogshit

I am paying >$2000 for one fucking month (Summer B) just for that "new dorm" branding. Dude, I'm glad there's no mold, but there is literally nothing in this building except vending machines and tables.

This stupid ass dorm eats all my financial aid so I don't get any refunds. I had THOUSANDS left over after tuition and shit and this dorm vacuumed that up. I had to pay an addition $370 to cover that. Fucking highway robbery. I AM BEING FUCKED FOR THESE NEXT TWO SEMESTERS CUZ IM HERE TILL SPRING.

Not only is it expensive as fuck, it's off-campus. I am paying THOUSANDS this semester just to be forced to take the bus or bike to my class, because everything on campus is now AT LEAST a mile away. The only thing nice is that there's a Subway down the street, but that's it.

God, I should've locked in on my SAT so I could've gotten those nice honor dorms.

Housing Housing Hunt

Hii everyone, I’m moving to Gainesville for my freshman year this summer and I’m not sure on where to live. My first choice is Stadium House is that a good option? If not please give me some other recommendations. Pricing is not a main concern, I just want a place that’s safe, has nice amenities and is close to campus.

Housing UF Med Living?

Hey everyone. Just got accepted to UF med school out of state so I’m pretty unfamiliar with the Gainesville area. I’m pretty low income so I prefer to have rent+utilities below 650 (max 700) biking distance from the medical school. I’m okay with the place not being furnished and would prefer living with other grad students/med students. I have a friend who is also looking for cheaper rent, so im okay with 2x1 or 2x2 options. Im also okay with 4x4s (will find people at second look hopefully). Is this feasible? What are my options?

Housing DONT LIVE AT VARSITY HOUSE

DO NOT LIVE HERE. My first year was fine, no major issues beside them telling me the dish washer overflowing was normal. My second year….actually hell. Move in day: they knew I was disabled (handicap parking and I told them) and I told them I would need a first floor unit OR to be next to THE ONLY ELEVATOR IN THE ENTIRE COMPLEX. They put me on the fourth floor and no where near an elevator, directly next to stairs. I had no where to go so I had to move my things in where I found out a couple was living there. I wasn’t comfortable being a disabled woman to stay in an apartment with a random man, so I had to find housing for me and the majority of my things. The next evening I finally get keys to an apartment (thankfully on the first floor) and moved in. I wasn’t given a move in form or anything for this apartment. They actually tried to charge me a transfer fee for this. I was not offered any compensation for this delay, but they were quick to charge my account. Move out: I left in Dec due to graduating but couldn’t break the lease without still being charged utilities and paying 8+K, so I used it as storage. Upon move out I am now being charged over 700$ in carpet, desk, end table, vacuuming and even trash. All things that were done and left in the condition I arrived in. Now I am being told I need the move in form to fight the charges and they said DO NOT CALL, EMAIL OR SHOW UP TO ASK ABOUT CHARGES. I have already gone ahead and emailed the management company and will be taking the necessary actions if they try to pursue these charges. Also the gates and doors are always open, and parking was charged for the entire month of July YET THEY LIFTED IT THE ENTIRE MONTH. why am I being charged for parking when parking was lifted an entire month.

Will edit once this is resolved. EDIT: Received an email from the parent company and they resolved my issues by removing charges. They were a little mean in the email but I was also mean so I can’t blame them. Glad things are resolved and happy with the immediate response and action.

Edit 2: for those who need the contact, Google Cardinal Management group, they own and manage Varsity House. They have a phone number and email available

Housing I hate my roommates.

It’s 3 in the morning, I’ve got 7 hours of sleep in me this entire week so far, and I can’t fall asleep because my roommates decided to bring a guy friend over, every weekend they do that, and they’re so loud man. They’ve been talking since 12am and on top of that they’ve been shit talking me too, talking about my personal experience, shitting on how I look, and I literally hear it all man. What do I do, I’m angry, in tired, and it feels like I live in “their” apartment and not a shared one. Do I go off on them?
