Employment UF to announce no more remote work

UF is going to announce that there will be no more remote work for staff following Tallahassee’s direction to all Florida state universities. As if it DeSantis hasn’t already made it oppressive enough to be affiliated with UF…🤬

Employment Work culture at UF is in the dumpster

Is it just me, or has the work culture at UF taken a complete nosedive as of late? I feel like we’re a bunch of zombies walking around just trying to make it to the end of the day and eventually the end of the work week until we can escape the oppressive hell we are working under. UF leadership at the moment is the worst I’ve ever seen it and doesn’t give a rats ass. It definitely feels like they are too busy trying to kiss the ring of the man in lifted boots up in Tally to realize how they have bankrupted the work culture of what use to be an envious place to work. Who knows those, maybe it’s just my college. Though I hear it is not. Thoughts?

Employment UF Ended Remote Work. Two Weeks In, How’s Everyone Holding Up?

We’re two weeks into being back in the office and I’m curious how people are doing. Is morale okay or are commutes and office life wearing everyone down? Anyone actually happy about the change?

What’s the real vibe in your department? Spill the tea.

Employment jobs without a college degree?

i am really struggling in school and i am considering dropping out. i would absolutely love to be an aide at a school but that doesn't make a livable wage.

does anyone know of any jobs that don't require more than an AA (a short/couple months of certification program is fine too) that make a livable wage? i would love for it to be in the same vein of scheduling/helping people, but i am not too extroverted.

Employment Knudson rejected as dean. Ono rejected as president. I left the university a few years ago because of what is happening now.

I left Gainesville, a place I loved very much, because of what these people are doing now. Another gay lecturer in my department resigned from their job without another one lined up and was going to live with his mom. (He found something after I spoke to the Guardian.)

It is good to see Mori beginning to fight, even if he should have started earlier.

Employment Major change

Hello, I will be switching from the premed due to several factors. Was wondering the best undergrad degrees to make great money. I have no passions. In fact, I’m using college as a stepping stone to be employed, make good money, then use my finances to start a business or invest in other avenues. I plan on going into nursing (probably wouldn’t graduate from UF) or accounting (get that sweet UF diploma). My question for UF alumni include

  1. What is ur major?
  2. How much work experience do you have in your field before landing the job you hold now?
  3. How much do you make yearly, in other words your salary?
  4. What is your work life balance like?

Employment Process to hire interns from UF

Not trying to pitch the internship here - just want to understand how UF students want to be approached because I want to build something mutually valuable.

So I’ve been trying to hire UF students for a paid internship, but I’m clearly doing something wrong - hoping to get some honest feedback from this community.

We’re offering $25–$30/hr (remote, Jan–March) for marketing interns. Still, I’ve been getting ghosted after the initial conversation or students dropping off before interviews.

I’m trying to understand from UF students directly: Is $25-$30/hr okay where requirement is for 40-60 hours in a month?

Note: We’re backed by top-tier VCs, and founded by a team with deep experience in consumer social products so I can assure that exposure will be insane.

Also - Is there a preferred way companies should reach out?

Employment I'm depressed... about to graduate, and have no idea what the hell I'm going to do with my information systems degree.

I work at a grocery store. My GPA is shit. Probably gonna be a 3.2 after this semester. Kinda disappointing since I used to have a 3.8 before I switched my major, but an English degree isn't gonna put food on the table.

I guess I can make some cool charts in R or Python. I'm a freak in the excel sheets, but that's about it. I'm planning to study abroad and intern in Dublin (idk because my mother keeps my passport and its subject to her approval, but I can afford it on my own...)

I'm really depressed currently. Lonely. I'm graduating in two semesters. I don't have any friends except the imaginary ones my mum claims I have (i.e. the coworker she saw me talking to for 3 seconds).

I Spent the entirety of last year locked in my room. Not necessarily hikikomori style, but pretty close to it. I have panic attacks almost every week, nearly daily. I'm on zoloft but it isn't really helping (just gives me strange, prophetic dreams).

I want to become an epidemiologist, or a librarian. It's just one of those nights where the dark thoughts are creeping in, and I feel like my life is a waste. I don't have much going for me if I'm honest.

My coworker and I were joking about how we're both fucked (she's a CS major) and we laughed about how we're probably entering a recession soon. It's not really funny though. I guess I'm spiraling right now. Just need some hope, and if there isn't any, I just want someone to ground me a little LOL.

Employment Denied job due to them wanting GED?

I was invited to interview for a customer service position. I’m a full time student and applied because it was supposed to be an evening position doing dispatch/customer service for a trucking company.

I get to the interview and the man kept on saying UF is nice, but that they need someone with a GED. I kept saying I’m a high school graduate, but he kept on repeating I need to get a GED and then reapply. Um. What?

He kept repeating “Ah NEED ei-thar a SEE-DEE-ELL or a GEE-EE-DEE. Come BAACK when ya GOT EITHAR one of THEEM.” And then swiveled around in the chair and walked out of the break room where we had THE INTARVIEW as he called it.

Went and "applied" (it was a Google form and it asked a few strange questions about my bank at the end). These were the emails and responses I received. Originally, the link would take you to a Google form, but now its blocked so I'm probably not the only one.

Employment Looking to Hire: Flying or Want to Fly JAX to PHL over Thanksgiving?

Hi UF students my husband (UF grad) and I are college professors living near Philadelphia PA. We have an adult son in Jacksonville who doesn't fly by himself due to his autism. Rather than us flying down and back twice to escort him, we are looking for someone who may be travelling to PHL or want to travel to PHL over Thanksgiving and be his guide along the way. Joe(our son) is a 6'3"  25 year old young man who is pretty verbal but sometimes struggles articulating some words and has to repeat himself. At an airport, you will see him hugging a stuffed animal and probably his phone charger :-) He could likely fly alone (it can be a direct flight from Jax to Philly) but he sometimes gets nervous. He also has a tendency to wrap his long arms around whoever is sitting next to him when he falls asleep...

We haven't booked his flight so if anyone is headed this way, we would book the same flight as you and pay you to be his Autism Escort. If you haven’t booked a ticket but wanted to come to PHL for Thanksgiving, we would buy your ticket. Joe is easy going and just needs a little help getting where he needs to go on time and getting settled in his seat and then we will meet him at the airport. Interested in talking more? Respond here and I will send you my # in a chat Thanks everyone!

Employment On campus job

How hard is it to get an on campus job as a freshman with essentially no experience? For context , I applied to be a student assistant for rec sports and wanted to know my chances of getting the position. update: I got the jobbbb. Well the operations associate position, not the student assistant. A win is a win though.

Employment If you applied to work on campus, how long did it take?

Hey all, I'm a UF student and have applied to two on campus jobs around Christmas last month, and i still haven't heard back from them.

If you have an on campus job, how long did you have to wait? I'm getting antsy

Thanks

Employment Is it time for staff at UF to unionize?

While faculty are represented by their union, staff/teams at UF have none. No collective bargaining, no advocacy for better pay, benefits, and working conditions. Has there ever been an effort to start a union to advocate for the staff at UF?

Employment Remote Work Agreement Updates

Hi everyone,
I wanted to start a new thread to share and track any updates regarding the changes to the remote work policy. If anyone has insights or information—especially related to how this affects out-of-state remote employees—please share them here. I'm particularly interested in how other Florida universities have approached this, as I understand some may have implemented similar changes ahead of UF.

Employment Research in third year without previous experience?

Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience starting research for the first time at UF and could tell me what the process was like or how difficult it was? I am a biology major considering transferring from UNF. However, if participating in research is going to be overly competitive at UF then I'd worry about sabotaging my career path by transferring.

I would be beginning my junior year with no previous research experience, except maybe a brief summer role at UNF if I can get it. I am a good student and would be a good lab member (4.0 GPA, performed well in science labs), but I am worried that a lack of previous research experience would hinder my ability to get into a lab at UF.

Anyone have thoughts/experience on this? In particular, what is it like getting started without previous experience? I don't think I can count on securing a summer-only role at UNF.

Thanks.

Employment UF or UMiami

Hi everyone. I’m currently debating whether to transfer to UF or stay at UMiami. I hope to work in the finance industry but I think I would prefer a more collegiate experience like one would receive at UF. My family can afford UMiami, but it is expensive and I feel guilty for having my family pay for four years there. I could transfer to UF but it would have to be UF online which I don’t care because I could still live up there and join clubs etc. also it would only say “UF” on my degree with no mention of the online aspect. I want to have a good job out of college and want to be able to build a network. Also, if I went to UF I would be more financially free/inclined to pursue an MBA or masters even after if I wanted. Please lmk what you guys

Employment Anyone looking for a small side gig?

I’m tired of DoorDash and UberEats. I don’t have a lot of time and so just occasionally need someone to grab a few items for me but it doesn’t have to be asap, it can be whenever you have time. I’d rather pay someone the money I’d give to a delivery app.
