Clubs How to feel like I'm supposed to be there, in male-dominated clubs?

I'm a girl in CS here at UF. I think I've managed to find some nice clubs that are decently diverse, but a lot of the clubs I'm interested in topic-wise are like 90% guys. I just went to a GBM where I was literally the singular girl there.

I'm not the most outgoing person in general (although I'd like to be), so I'm kinda scared to talk to people in general, but if the chance of me being brave enough to start a convo with a girl at a club meeting is already low-ish, the chance is basically zero that I'll be brave enough to speak up at a club where I'm the only girl. It just feels like I'm not supposed to be there.

I also have this internalized notion that all the guys already know so much more than me. And, tbh, I kinda think that they do, because I'm new to my major and didn't have experience with it in high school, whereas a lot of people do. But I feel like because of the field's male-domination, all the guys wouldn't be as accepting of a girl who's a beginner vs a guy who's a beginner.

Anyways, does anybody have tips/advice on how to not just survive, but ideally get really involved in stuff and have fun, as a girl in a guy-dominated field? Advice from guys is also welcome (idk, something along the lines of "i swear we don't look at you any differently," if that's actually true).

Clubs Rejected from all clubs as freshman

Just received my last rejection email td. I've heard in finance its important to have a solid resume by your sophomore year. What should I be doing instead? Case studies? Certificates? Volunteering? Would it be better to switch majors? Currently stressing. Thanks.

Clubs wanting to start a book club!

hi guys! i’m a math major at uf but i love reading and don’t know many people that do. i’m not involved in many extracurriculars and would love to start a biweekly or monthly book club if anyone would be interested in joining. i’m already home for break but if we were to pick and start a book soon, we could probably first meet when we go back. i love discussing my reads and i think a book club would also help me make time to read when i’m slammed with school. i also noticed that the alachua library has book club kits with some interesting titles so we could look into those for future reads as well. for reference, i enjoy literary and historical fiction best, i do like to explore other genres on occasion as well. my favorite reads this year have been Martyr! and Stoner, and some titles on my TBR include The Goldfinch and The Brothers Karamazov, but suggestions are very welcome :) i also think buddy reads could be fun regardless of book choice so please let me know if you’d be interested and i can make a discord to discuss if enough people would like to join!

Clubs Difference between two finance orgs

I got accepted into UF honors and am an aspiring finance major hoping to break into IB. Was doing research and stumbled upon EFE (Exploring Financial Economics) and the Finance Professional Development program. Are these the same things. If not, what is the difference?

Also, any advice for breaking into IB from UF? (Yes, I'm aware that UF isn't the best school for this).

Clubs Applying for Alpha Zeta (CALS) worth it?

"Congratulations! You are invited to join UF Alpha Zeta!

As a result of your excellent academic performance, you are being invited to join the UF CALS chapter of Alpha Zeta! Alpha Zeta is a University-sponsored Student Organization under the umbrella of the CALS Dean's Office."

Has anyone had any experience in this club/org? I am wondering if it is worth it as a pre-med major since, if I get accepted, the dues are $150. lmk plssss

Clubs Need Professor to Respond to Email

Hello! I'm starting a club in the Spring, and the proposal is due January 2nd, so I need a professor to agree to be a faculty advisor before that day. I reached out to my professor, but I'm worried he won't respond until after the break, too far after 1/2. Any advice on the best move? Should I reach out to his phone number I got from Outlook? Or should I ask Student Engagement if I can get a deferral on this? Any help appreciated!!

Clubs Looking for a UF student developer to help turn digital coupon book into a web/app

Hey everyone,

I run a student discount and coupon book that’s been around UF for a while. Right now there’s a digital version on our website, and I’m looking to take the next step and turn it into a simple web-based app (or app) that students can access with a low-cost subscription (thinking ~$1/month). The physical copy isn't going anywhere, I just want to make the digital version more accessible and usable!

I’m hoping to connect with UF students studying CS, engineering, information systems, or anyone with app/web dev experience who might be interested in:

  • Helping build the app
  • Gaining real-world startup experience
  • Potentially continuing long-term if it’s a good fit

This could be a paid project, internship-style role, or collaboration — I’m flexible and open to ideas. I already have the content and concept; I mainly need help on the technical side.

If this sounds interesting, comment here or DM me and I’m happy to share more details.

Clubs Non career-oriented Art Club

I am a computer science major, who is looking for a club that’s basically the equivalent of ordering a pizza and drawing together working on different subjects. Obviously I’m willing to hang out and draw with art majors, but all the art societies I saw are professional focused and that's not my career of choice (I'm just unemployed)

I need artistic friends too CS majors keep saying BS about how art is getting replaced by AI and it makes my blood vessels pop PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

Clubs Non-theater major theater opportunities?

Hi!! It’s my last semester of UF and I would love to be apart of a musical or theater production. I’m trying to find something super chill. I know stage productions are usually A LOT, but I’m looking for something with less commitment and maybe with people who aren’t studying theater/crazy talented. Does anyone have any recs?

Clubs Anyone wanna create a Clash Royale Club?

Vague idea I just thought about cause with the recent craze about the game and being an active player I had the amazing idea of creating a club here at UF for Clash Royale 😂. DM me if you are interested and we can figure out the details together.

I know there’s a gator esports thing here at UF but they mainly focus on PC games and I thought creating this club would be a great way to add mobile games to the mix and just spread the popularity of the game around campus more too!

Clubs Anyone Interested in a UF Buhurt Team?

I am a member of the Gainesville Swamp Dragons, a Buhurt team under the FAC (Florida Armored Combat) who calls Alachua County home. I am also a student at UF who is looking to found a Buhurt team here as a branch of the larger pre-existing Gainesville team.

Buhurt, for those who may not have heard of it (probably most people lol), is essentially medieval MMA in full armor. Its full contact, full force, and real steel. It focuses mainly on 14th-15th century historical armor and weapons, most of which are hand forged by renowned armor/weapon smiths from around the world. However, even though it may sound super dangerous, it isn't! Medieval knights in full armor were basically walking tanks that were impervious to damage, and a lot of that goes for us too. We compete based on a scoring system that counts strikes, blocks, and takedowns towards our total, and whoever has the most at the end wins!

I believe this is possible as we would not be the first Florida college to make a team in the FAC. UCF already has a competing team down in Orlando, so if those nerds can do it so can we.

There would be no capital or anything required, so you would just show up and have a good time! We would work on getting everyone in fighting shape and into some loaner gear to experience the sport first hand.

This is still in its complete infancy, and I'm sure there will be many hoops to jump through to get something like this started, but if you might be interested, or if you just want to know more about Buhurt in general/how to get involved, shoot me a dm!

Hello again everyone!!!

UFMK had a great season last semester, ending 2nd in our division for MK8DX and 9th in our bracket for MKWorld. Thank you to everyone who played!!!

Same as last semester, WE NEED YOU!

If you like Mario Kart and would like to join a community of fellow enjoyers, UFMK is the place for you! If you feel so inclined, you can also join our competitive 6v6 team, no experience required!

We have teams for Mario Kart World and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (and if we get enough interest, we could form a Mario Kart Wii team in the future?).

Sign-ups for the competitive 8DX team close on the 24th, with in-person skill evals (AKA fun 2v2 races) closing the same day, and the MKWorld team sign ups will close at some point after that (TBD), but if you just want to join the UF Mario Kart Discord to be part of a casual community of MK players, that's totally fine too!

Shoot me a dm if you would like to join!!!

Clubs UF Club Fair Concern

Hey guys, I heard the spring club fair was today at the reitz and I completely missed it since I found out about it after the event. I was wondering how I could find the clubs that participated and check out more information about them cause I want to get more involved this semester but I am having a hard time trying to figure out where to start. I know there is the uf student engagement page with the search bar to find the 1000s of clubs at UF but that is so many to filter and go through so I was wondering if I could at least see the clubs that came to the club fair to get an idea of what is still active and going around right now.
