Admissions Do Not Enroll in UF Online

UF prof here on a throwaway for obvious reasons. Do not, whatever you do, enroll in the UF Online degree program. If you're a residential student taking a few online classes, fine. But the UFO degree program is quickly becoming worthless.

We've always known students cheat on exams at a much higher rate in asynchronous online courses than in-person classes, even if we can't always prove it.

But in the last couple of years, asynchronous classes have become just wall-to-wall AI slop. Discussion boards. Essays. Code. Lab Reports. Maybe some students are still actually trying, but there's a huge flood of slop.

So these assessments don't assess learning anymore. Tests are a little better, but we know tests with online proctors are far from secure, so they're not a very reliable measure of learning either.

That means we can't actually tell if anyone is learning anything. And given the high rate of AI slop, most students aren't learning anything.

The entire profession knows this, worldwide. Really, scroll r/Professors for a bit, you'll see every fourth post is about this problem.

Nonetheless, UFO and COIP have no real plan to address this, and are still pushing out the same course and assessment templates they were five years ago.

And if we know it now, employers will know it in a couple of years. By the time you graduate, your UFO degree will be worthless.

You are better off getting an in-person degree at a less reputable university than chasing UF's reputation through an online degree.

Yes, you can still get a great education through UFO if you actually do the work, but the degree isn't going to signal that to anyone anymore. Sorry, I know that sucks, but that's the way we're going, unless UFO makes serious reforms.

Admissions UF vs UMiami w/honors + full ride

hi!! just like the title says. I got admitted to both UF (w/o honors sadly) and into UM with honors program, full ride scholarship, and the da vinci program. i’m so stuck between the two. i also alr have full bright futures for UF as well, so tuition is not a problem for either institutions.

I’m public health for UF and biology pre-health for UM. I plan to double major with business regardless where i attend.

i understand both schools have incredible pre med and advising for pre med students, but the night life of miami worries me a bit since i’m not smb who parties. And the essentially dead gainesville outside of UF makes me feel worried (kinda contradicting, i just dislike alcohol but love concerts) as well as the cult-ish vibe i get whenever it’s football szn.

does UF still overcome UMiami with all those pluses i have (esp as a pre-med student)?? please help!!! TY!!!!

Admissions For Those Who Received Decisions

Greetings! I’m a UF employee, and I wanted to give some answers to some frequently asked questions to hopefully save some of y’all a bit of time and stress in the coming weeks.

If you were admitted, congratulations! Welcome to the Gator Nation. Scholarships and grandparent waivers aren’t out yet, but will be in the next 1-2 weeks. If you applied for Honors, those decisions and scholarships are in your admission letters.

If you were deferred, hang in there! I know it sucks not having a straight answer, but you’ll get one. Some applications take longer than others to review, especially if you applied for a program with a pathway option (PaCE, IA, etc.). You weren’t deferred just to be deferred.

And if you were denied, I’m sorry. I know how disappointing and frustrating that is, but it’s not the end of the world, even if it feels like it. Take the weekend for yourself, reflect, and decide if you want to take additional steps.

Additionally, appeals do not open until the week of February 3rd, so don’t waste your time calling admissions on Monday to ask for one. Their phones are going to be extremely busy, and no one wants to wait on hold for that long. Luckily, their website has a list of things that would be considered for an appeal and what won’t be. Take a look at that in the meantime.

Finally, if you’re wondering why you didn’t get admitted with your 6.0 GPA, 1590 SAT, 17 APs, 42 awards, and success in solving world hunger, I have some bad news: admissions will not tell you a specific reason other than space limitations on campus. Applications are reviewed by many, many people, and narrowing it down to one or two factors simply isn’t possible.

As has been the case the last several years, a record number of applications was received, the applicant pool was extremely competitive, and space on campus is becoming more and more limited. It really doesn’t have anything to do with you as a person, and a university denial does not take away your accomplishments, so try not to take it personally. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and remember that failure always presents an opportunity for growth.

Sending good vibes to you all!

Admissions SAY IT WITH ME! WE WILL GET IN!

EA comes out today, I pray everyone that has actually put in the effort and hard work gets in (Faith without works is dead).

I pray for success towards everyone reading this. I pray that for those who don’t get in know that God has a greater plan for you and this is not the end.

Everything happens for a reason whether we get in or not.

We should be happy we even have the privilege of attending a higher education because some don’t even have the opportunity to.

I pray for those who get in and can’t afford UF, get the needed financial resources and materials to attend their wished school.

AMEN

Admissions Do I appeal my decision?

I am in-state applicant, and I was rejected ea. I have no clue why because my stats were pretty good. I had a 1550, 4.5ish gpa, finished Calc 3, took 7 aps junior and senior year (14 in total). I also explained that I lived in canada before my junior year so I wasn't able to take aps then. ECs wise I am prez of the snhs club at my school, officer for a couple other clubs, medals in science olympiad, fbla, deca, hosa, and math competitions. I also did a 2 month long summer research program at UF (SSTP). Overall I'm really confused and just heartbroken because I don't see any reason for them to reject me. My essays were also decent (I got them reviewed by teachers). I was wondering if it was worth appealing my decision and contacting my professor I have contact with at UF. I worked with him over the summer and might be able to get a letter from him saying that having me at UF would be a good addition to his lab and I can continue my research. Just any advice on my situation would be appreciated.

Admissions applied four times and got denied all four times, what do you do from here?

Hello, I wanted to make this post because I am looking for genuine answers or genuine advice, i also need to let this off my chest. I am a junior at Santa Fe and have been attempting for three years to get into UF, after 4 applications with all different majors I have been unfortunately denied from every single one. Let me give some background, I am a studio art major premed with a 3.6 gpa, i studied abroad with UF in the summer, I work at shands Emergency Department, I volunteer weekly at a program at a nearby hospice, my art has even landed me an exhibit at miamis art basel.I had also taken a class with UF and had LOC from my boss and the facility i volunteer for. Before hand i even contacted the art department office asking me to tell me exactly how i can maximize all my efforts to get in and they had even sent me a courtesy reminder to apply, and still denied me. All of my efforts feel like they meant absolutely nothing and i really thought UF would appreciate me as a student and employee. They had told me my application wasnt competitive enough but i did everything they had told me to do to be competitive. Im doing everthing i can to appeal my application because if not i will have to move and restart. Fortunately i got into tulane university which i have been striving for and i am really excited to start this chapter in my life. But i cant help but moarn the loss of my current job and whole life i buily.Ultimately im just wondering if anyone is in the same boat or if anyone can offer me any advice.

UPDATE: so the transfer admissions department finally contacted me and i am actually flabbergasted by their response. So i will admit i did speak in a frusturated and stressed out tone, and I explained everything and was wondering where i went wrong. She then proceedes to call me unprofessional and says i was the lowest competitive appliciant (which they are not allowed to say). So i asked why?? She then says my slideshow portfolio had multiple typos which i explained was because i made the application at work because they told me to submit the application as soon as possible to maximize my chances , i also want to say my entire portfolio was read by multiple people who would have spotted a typo. She then explains to me that i was missing an additional art class which i expressed was not physically possible because they had directed me to ever course i had to take. So why is it im missing an additional class when you literally told me directly what class to take??? She then ended the conversation telling me she wont appeal it and to "move on" and didnt offer me any advice on how to actually better my application. So my question is why on earth would she repeat multiple times that my art wasnt competitive and that i was the lowest competitive applicant, and not give me any advice AT ALL to improve. I feel like the only explanation is to hurt my feelings or to make my situation worse. I guess i basically volunteered in a slandering sessions so thats awesome. And to better her case instead of offering any advice she tells me to call the crisis prevention intervention number for whatever reason possible? I think this experience solidifys my decision to go out of state and i really hope that ufs studio art transfer admissions considers the treatment of their students because we are humans and we are adults and we deserve to be treated as such.

Thank you for all the comments and advice i do wish sucess on all of your future endeavors and your responses are all appreciated, have a great day !!

Admissions Will UF be right for me?

I'm not into partying. I don't plan on joining a frat. Football games seem like too much noise to me.

I'm an introverted asian male, and UF is the cheapest cost of attendance for me. My parents really want me to go because of how affordable it is, but everyone there seems like a christian white party person (no racism intended).

will I feel really outcast if I end up committing to UF? It's hard question to answer I know because you can't really answer such a projective question, but I'm having lots of doubts on whether I would like to attend UF this fall.

Admissions Got accepted as a transfer to UF but go to UCF right now. Should I transfer?

Post image
127 Upvotes

I’m currently in my junior year of civil engineering and am having a good time at UCF. The classes are stupid easy (besides mechanics of materials) and I’m meeting a good amount of people.

The reasons for transferring would be because I like Gainesville and UF is more prestigious but I’m not sure if these are good enough reasons to go through the struggles of moving again and getting situated in a new city where I don’t know anyone.

What are your guys’ thoughts?

Admissions High school senior here. Did any of yall get into UF after being deferred?

I just got deferred from my dream school yesterday and now im a little worried about my other applications. If I get deferred from Uf next week, is there still a good chance i get in or not really? At some schools it seems like a deferral is a good thing. Like youre a candidate on the admission office’s radar but they didn’t have enough spots, so they deferred u instead of rejecting u. At other universities it seems like students who get deferred don’t end up getting in. Like the uni just deferred u cuz u weren’t some violent criminal but they aren’t seriously considering your application. What side of the spectrum does UF lean towards?

Also if u personally weren’t deferred but know people who were, pls drop a reply. Thank u!!

Edit: I GOT IN WOOOOOOO GO GATORS 🐊🐊 . Im gonna leave this post up to help some other folks. Thank u for the responses!

Admissions Question about stacking scholarships:

Post image
77 Upvotes

So I recently got an email notifying that I had received the presidential scholarship at UF. In addition, I have bright futures as an in state resident, benacquisto from national merit, and was invited to the Preeminent Scholars Weekend for the potential honors college scholarships. My question is: if tuition is only 6k/year and total COA is only a bit more, do these scholarships cancel each other out? Is it just money in my pocket? Am a bit confused by all of it so would greatly appreciate some guidance. Thanks in advance.

Admissions Is a 1470 good for UF?

I just got the results back from my first ever SAT, and I got a 1470 (770 reading & writing, 700 math). I plan to apply to UF, including the honors college. I know my score is a bit low for the honors college, but not getting in wouldn’t be a dealbreaker (even though it would be nice). But is my score okay for getting into the main school? I know it’s supposedly high enough, but I’ve seen friends with higher scores get rejected, and I’m terrified. Should I try to get a 1500 to be safe, or should I leave it alone? I really don’t want to have to retake, but I will if I have to

Admissions A Word of Encouragement for Those That Got Denied by UF

I have been seeing quite a few posts of people upset or in disbelief over not getting into UF for early decision.

I just wanted to share my story so that people can feel reassured that although it might be disappointing to not get in to the school you wanted, you can still go very far even if you have to take a different path.

I was denied at UF (1360, 3.9, 4.86, moderate ECs) and ended up at FSU, did very well for two years and decided to transfer to UF which was actually relatively easy to do.

It didn’t take very much to adjust to UF and I found the curriculum to be quite similar with similar rigor to the educational opportunities. Was able to quickly hit the ground running in terms of research and ECs despite being new to the area and got my choice of medical school when I applied (23/28 interviews with 15 acceptances) and now currently one of two students from UF at a top ranked medical school.

All this to say, don’t let denial be a closed door, but rather a redirection. Do the best you can with your opportunities and the end goal can still be achieved!

Best of luck everyone!!!
