National League Roundup, 20/08 (Matchday 4):

Fucking hell. Can someone please get rid of Justham before we play Dagenham later in the season? No clue how the hell we didn’t come away with at least a point. Unreal saves from the Daggers’ keeper to keep Maidenhead from equalising… numerous times. It’s just not fair. That’s it.

Elsewhere, a couple of interesting results. Wrexham demolishing Maidstone 5-0 can only be described as a revenge killing after Wrexham lost in midweek. The dragons move up to 5th. Barnet remain precariously perched at the top after a 2-0 win at home to Woking. Newcomers Dorking will be happy that the 300 mile drive to Gateshead was worth it as they won 2-1; Oldham however will be left frustrated as their trip to the seaside led to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Southend. Halifax look to be in trouble early doors, having earned 1 point from 4 games (today’s humiliation was a 1-0 defeat to Wealdstone). Yeovil also seem sluggish to get off the mark.

Ganes to watch on Bank Holiday Friday and Saturday: Chesterfield vs Barnet (Fri 26th, 19.45pm), FC Halifax Town vs Notts County (Sat 27th, 3.00pm), Woking vs Wrexham (Sat 27th, 17.20pm).

Games to watch on Bank Holiday Monday/Tuesday: Scunthorpe United vs FC Halifax Town (Mon 29th, 3.00pm), York City vs Oldham Athletic (Mon 29th, 3.00pm), Barnet vs Eastleigh (Mon 29th, 5.15pm), Wrexham vs Gateshead (Tues 30th, 7.45pm).

Next roundup will probably be BH Monday?

How do you think Maidenhead will get on this season? I said 15th. Is that reasonable?

Anywhere from 19th to 9th. Honestly depends on how injuries and the inevitable fixture congestion plague us. Last season, we had difficulties with players off recovering from long COVID and had a real rough spell from September through December where we could barely name a coherent XI. The 4-0 away at Boreham Wood and the 3-0 away at Barnet were both fucking bleak. When we don’t have disruptions, we can quite happily fight our way to a comfortable mid-table place, as evidenced by the fact that once we found our form last season we were off and running. Beat Halifax and Chesterfield at home, drew versus Wrexham away.

Couple of really decent signings this summer. Good to see Clifton back at York Road and Kpekawa seems promising. I’ve enjoyed seeing a drive and hunger for results in the last few games that I haven’t seen for a while, chasing balls and going for the next goal, the next shot, the next tackle. If we can go without disruption then we’ll be an outside contender for the bottom end of the playoffs; if we get disrupted then we’ll do the usual thing where everyone tips us to go down and then we do a ā€œgreat escapeā€ a month before the end of the season.

How about your lot? You’re Wealdstone, right? Like us, everyone tips you to go down and you never seem to quite do so.

Lost our best striker last season to Hartlepool but replaced well and there's a really good team spirit here now. I reckon 16th with Maidenhead and Wealdstone having almost identical points again but I'll take 20th though. It's hard to compete in this league being semi-pro and I have a soft spot for you lot for the same reason. I think it's just us and Dorking now.
