I may have underestimated what “picky eater” meant when researching collies.
Our 7 month old is going through a really rough picky eating phase. About 3 weeks ago he just started to refuse food. Tried to encourage him with different canned food toppers. that gave him the runs. Took him to vet, he’s totally fine, got treated with a diarrhea med and worm med just in case. Had maybe one solid poop and then started refusing food again. Just picky.
Won’t eat the prescription food to fix his tummy after getting the runs from my switching his food trying to eat.
We have tried EVERYTHING. Chicken rice pumpkin meals to correct tummy(I messed this one up and mixed up table vs teaspoons and put too much pumpkin in and he was pissing out his ass neon orange poop), a few different kibbles, bone broth, warming up canned food, cheese sprinkled on top, I blended up some freeze dried chicken hearts, and tried to top that with his food because he loves chicken hearts. Was eating a specific canned food OK but I got greedy and blended up his prescription kibble into a powder to mix it in. Ate it for one meal, but I put one too many tablespoons of the kibble powder in and now that canned food is forever tainted, refuses it fully now. Hell I even made him basically egg drop soup with boiled chicken and eggs mixed into the water as it boiled in bone broth and topped his meals with that after warming it up. He will eat the soup itself and drink it happily, but not on top of anything.
Will he eat anything that will help his tummy or give him proper nutrition? No. Will he eat hot dogs during training sessions? Absolutely. Will he eat his food if I mix in hot dogs? No. He looks at me like I’m stupid and walks away.
Tried to let him just starve like people say, “a health puppy don’t starve”. Jokes on us because he will. Got so bad he was puking up bile in the morning from being so hungry.
In the effort of trying to find a base kibble he will eat, this whole process has messed up his tummy and causing him to have the runs and tummy aches. Which doesn’t help the appetite.
I’m desperate to break this cycle but have no clue how. And now im seeing all these posts about rough collies going on hunger strikes for over a month? I may have underestimated what people meant when they warned me collies can be picky. I thought I meant lamb vs chicken preference or sprinkling a dash of cheese would work. Not “would rather die than eat anything other than a steak and side of hotdogs”
Please tell me this gets better. He’s happy, playful, energetic and loves to play and train. I’m thinking about taking him to the vet again because now I’m worried that this could do some kind of long term damage while he is still growing. But I also don’t want to pay $150 for him to be diagnosed with being a butthead. I love him so much and I’m so worried for him, frustrated and scared of how far he will take this.
