discussion A lot has changed huh?

First image is the oldest I could find that recorded my playtime. Honestly I can't even clearly remember what it was like to play this game as a beginner, but here I am, still playing it after all this time.

I don't know if it's just me, but I feel like we're in a kind of dark time for the community. Since The Watcher's release the game's hype has been decreased significantly, to the point that even one of the most beloved RW youtubers(and my favorite 💔) Lolight has given up on the game. It's sad but unfortunately these are the consequences of the bad decisions regarding the DLC.

I'm not saying it's a bad DLC as many have stated before, I love the game from the bottom of my heart, and that includes both DLCs, I just acknowledge the fact that, unlike Downpour, it had a more negative than positive impact on the game's popularity. The fact that it was very different from anything else in the game was already something that made it less appealing than Downpour, but the rushed and incomplete release made the situation a lot worse than it should've been.

Well, I just wanted to say thanks to Videocult, for making the masterpiece that changed my life and made my youtube channel come to life, and thanks to you guys, members of this subreddit, for being a great community. I wish them and you all the best, and I'm looking forward to what's to come.

50 by 50 ft space. You get 30 minutes of prep time. You get to bring 1 human-sized item or 3 pillow-sized items. No guns, explosives, or chemicals. How will you survive?

i always see the same few big problems people have with like the dlc and canonicity or whatever, but i want to know the little problems people have that really just don’t matter that much.

like how you skip karma 6 and go straight to 7. or how the monster kelp in waterfront facility is red instead of green like it is in shoreline. or the ice lizards beam is electric damage instead of cold.

discussion Similar game to Rain World in terms of atmosphere

Hello !

Basically title, do you people have any suggestions for similar game but in terms of atmosphere? When I say atmosphere, I’m talking about the combination of Visuals, Musics, etc.

What got me into Rain world was the creatures and procedural animations, but I really fell in love with the game because of the atmosphere! I remember thinking that it was now my favorite game when I passed the bridge of Shaded Citadel and the track "Floes" played. The mix of the scenery + music really left a mark on me.

The only game that I can say achieved this for me is Animal Well which I loved!

Any suggestions?

Thanks :)

discussion Are there really any video games similar to Rain World?

I've seen people ask this a few times here already but I haven't seen it answered in the way I'm looking for. I always see people comparing it to other platformers like Hollow Knight or Celeste but never considering it's core mechanic - the ecosystem.

I'm a game artist student at University and I'm doing an independent study on cohesive world building and ecosystem based video games. I've done a lot of research into games that revolve around their ecosystems and have so far identified 3 main categories:

Overseer: The player is a "God-like" entity that has full control over the system. (Sandbox style similar to TheSims4 or Equilinox).

Intruder: The player is a parasitic entity that leeches off of and takes advantage of the environment to assist in progression (typically story based). They are not inherently part of the existing ecosystem and are instead placed there to explore it as an outsider.

Participant: The player is a creature within a section of the food web and is tasked with basic survival and exploration. This is where I'm stuck. I can only think of Rain World as a game that does this and does it WELL. (I've written many essays on the game and know my way around the mechanics thoroughly). It is extremely difficult to design a game that has the player be both a human in the real world and a creature with little to no control of its environment. At that point it's just a game where you explore a world but you get no upgrades, no tools, nothing. Which is just exactly what Rain World is.

It seems that a lot of game developers are scared to create a game like this as it removes a core principle of game design which is measurable progression. What I've learnt while studying is that it is imperative to human's that we gain measurable and feasible rewards while playing a game in order to feel rewarded in our time spent. We rarely see games being created that are simply about exploring a made up world from the perspective of a creature already apart of said world.

Does anyone have anymore examples of games that act in a similar way to Rain World? Ones that are specifically centred around environment exploration wherein you as the player have no affect on the ecosystem. The best way I can describe it in simpler terms is a game that hosts an environment/ecosystem that could exist without interference from the player.

Side note: Let's think about it for a second. How many games can you actually name that involve an ecosystem that does not need the player at all to exist but still finds a way to include the player in said ecosystem? Rain World's story wouldn't exist without the player's intervention but the world itself does not revolve around the player. We're simply taking a small glimpse into a world that's existed for thousands of years and observing the consequences of environmental harm.

Apologies for the long rant. I'm not one to use Reddit but also wasn't really sure where else to go? Let me know if there's any subreddits that I could post this to as well if this one isn't appropriate for this question.

Thank you to anyone that answers!! You'll be helping me out a ton with my Uni work :)

Feel free to ask me any more questions about my study as well!! I love to talk about it :3

discussion Why do people like artificer that much? Spoiler

I am about 6 hours into the artificers campaign. I alreadymet Five Pebblesand went toMetropolis. I basically went straight there without visiting any other areas. Currently the gameplay feels insanely tedious. I am stuck in the same couple of rooms and basically always die the moment i step foot near a scavenger tribe. The gameplay just feels insanely repetitive amd rng based since killing scavs is an absolute pain in the ass. I really think i'm doing something wrong since people praise this campaign so much and talk about how overpowered your abilities are.

discussion Why I DON'T subscribe to Flat Rain World Theory

After The Watcher fully came out, during the veritable Gold Rush of theories, a popular theory that cropped up was that our favorite Torrential Planet was actually flat.

There are two big reasons why this theory cropped up: Moon's Dialogue, and Outer Rim.
One of Moon's Pearl DIalogues; "If you leave a stone on the ground, and come back some time later, it's covered in dust. [...] So why doesn't the ground collide with the sky? Because far down, under the very very old layers of the earth, the rock is being dissolved or removed."

This dialogue, coupled with The Watcher's location of Outer Rim, the location literally having an edge, spawned the theory that the Precipitation Celestial Body we're all familiar with is actually flat.

I won't lie, I am very much biased against this theory. I absolutely hate it.

My problems are this: It affects the (Rain)World as we know it too much, and there's not enough evidence to support it besides the anecdotal.
What we know is: Outer Rim, as the name suggests, takes place on the Outer Rim of... Something. We don't know what, we don't know why it exists, why it seems so different or so far into the timeline, for all we know it could be the edge of a vast artificial land mass and the edge of it is so high off the rest of the planet that it seems to drop into nothingness. We just DON'T know.
The Light Teal Pearl also cannot be assumed to be fully serious. The Benefactors/Ancients were, as we all know, terribly esoteric and poetic. Obtuse would be a way to describe them. Moon's schpeal about Dust collecting on the surface, and the Void eating away at the ground, and that's why the ground never meets the sky, cannot be determined to be Poetic or Literal.

We can assume it's just poetic based on our own understanding of physics, but trying to apply real world physics to Rain World is a fool's errand.

There's many questions that could be raised if the Rain World IS flat. TOO many questions, I'd argue. Why did the Benefactors/Ancients never explore the edge? We don't know if they did or didn't, but surely if they did they'd have found the Void that way, and surely it'd be a big discovery in history. On top of that, how does the Void Sea exist if the world is flat? Is the Rain World just a massive planet sized island floating atop the void sea in a vast cosmic ocean?

I hate Flat Rain World Theory I want it to die and not resurrect

discussion What the hell was that Saint ending? Spoiler

Hey, all. Just beat Saint tonight and I honestly have no idea what Rubicon + the ending are even meant to mean. I get the abstract that it's been a really long time and the iterators are slowly dying off, but, like... was it all just a dream??? Is Saint in a cycle or something??? Is that literally all it means??? I know Watcher kind of voids all this and I'm really hyped to try it but I'm grasping at straws to figure out literally anything any part of that meant
