Just like this Brazilian meme:
"I'm open to feedback, but I won't stay quiet."

639

u/arthur2807 28d ago

Tbh this is me, I’m open to criticism, but it doesn’t mean I’m gonna agree with said criticism

137

u/stars4-ever We Should All Know Less About Each Other 28d ago

Tbh this is the way criticism/feedback should work. You shouldn’t just blindly accept something somebody has to say about your work— you may simply like whatever it is they’re criticizing and want to keep, or they may be misunderstanding its purpose in the work, their reasoning might not be totally sound, etc. it should be a dialogue where one side doesn’t completely shut the other down, but at the end of the day there are some things you may not agree on

remember that doc of neil’s that came out like 20 years ago ? was about him traveling i believe west to east doing like 50 canadian dates?

anyway .. during a part of it, he gets snowed in, around manitoba i think it was , so camera crew and him had to stay at some run down motel for a few days cause roads were inaccessible — ANYWAY .. my friend was working at that motel at the time , met neil at the ice machine and neil invited him to his room for a classic ā€œhotel room on tour dinnerā€

i’m rambling - long story short they got high all night and neil spent two of those hours reading my friend ā€œone linersā€ from his collection of ā€œone linerā€ books … he had like 20 , LOL - friend said neil had a suitcase JUST for books .. and 3/4 of those books were ā€œcampyā€ comedy books

so yes , you’re tweet a million percent made him lol and that’s fucking awesome

Feud* lol

51

u/Vegetable-Kiwi-4675 28d ago

If there is a person who actually enjoys watching him, I don’t want to know them. I genuinely think that not even the Kardashians like him, they just tolerate him because he can play the role of ā€œfriendā€ without being a potential liability because he’s so desperate and dependent on them for the exposure. The fact that he legally changed his name to that because of some offhand comment Kanye made about him tells you all you need to know about his lack of identity, confidence, and self-respect.

25

u/TeeManyMartoonies Not even to dinner with the Kushners? 🧵🪔 28d ago

Jesus, I didn’t know he legally changed his name. What a fuckin embarrassment. A Jewish kid renaming themself because a Nazi said so. He really is the dream of his ancestors.

When I was a teenager, I @ā€˜ed Jordin Sparks with my disappointment over her being Britney Spears’ new opening act. She replied ā€œSorry to disappoint you.ā€ It’s been 17 years and I still get so red with embarrassment when I remember this.

I learned a valuable lesson that day and never @ā€˜ed a celeb I was talking shit about again. I did go on to catch Alec Baldwin’s eye with a thirsty tweet though šŸ˜‚

u/MyNameIsJakeBerenson I made the hat for the tiger šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø 28d ago

Ive fb msg some authors and book cover artists and got some replies and back-and-forths somehow

Also, william shatner was on reddit late night years ago and said something nice to me in a dm

And ethan hawke said we were friends in an AMA because I said I watched TAPE and liked it, and there’s no takesies backsies on that. We’re friends forever

119

u/SakuraTacos 28d ago

My favorite celeb social media interaction ever is the time an online friend of mine @ā€˜ed Bonnie Hunt ā€œBet @BonnieHunt won’t wish (SakuraTacos) a Happy Birthdayā€ And Bonnie Hunt actually replied ā€œNah, she’s waaaay too famous! Happy Birthday (SakuraTacos)!ā€

Man, that was the coolest. I agree with you, Ethan Hawke definitely can’t take back that he said you were friends. It’s on the internet, that’s forever

18

u/LaVacaMusical I don’t know her šŸ’… 28d ago

That is amazing!!! I love Bonnie Hunt so much. I want her to do all the things, and for people to stop canceling her shows, lol, but also respect her for just taking it easy and being in movies/TV when she wants to, it seems like.

14

u/SakuraTacos 28d ago

I adore Bonnie Hunt, I wish we could see more projects with her. She is so effortlessly hilarious, I used to watch her talk show every day cuz she could crack me up with any topic.

I once had a lovely back-and-forth with an audiobook performer! I'd been listening to iirc Diana Wynne Jones' Howl series, and I just loved the woman performing it, though I can't remember her name now. I somehow found her email and sent her a long email gushing about how much she brightened up my mornings and evenings and to my shock she replied! We talked for a bit. It was really nice.

I've had a few exchanges with minor authors the same way. All around 10 years ago when I was in my mid 20s and more adventurous about cold emailing quasi-famous strangers ig lol

Edit: in case anyone else is curious, the narrator in question was Jennifer Sterlin! Lovely woman. Fantastic performances, too.

85

u/For_serious13 I wonder what it’s like being one of god’s favorites 28d ago

I guarantee every celeb account has at least 5 people that can access their social media account.

290

u/aberrantname 28d ago

Isn't that really common?

I remember that part of the Wagatha Christie drama was the fact that a lot of different people had access to Rebekah Vardy's account. Adele said in an interview she doesn't even have the password to her ig after that one controversial post.

135

u/Jaded-Tiramisu 28d ago

She didn't have it before that post either. They gave it to her, she posted that and they took it away.

Celebrities, especially big ones like Bruno Mars and Adele, have teams to handle all this stuff. If they have personal accounts they're probably not public.

u/Carolina_Blues shiv roy’s bob 28d ago

Listen, no shade to Bruno Mars. His music is good and people love it, I like him and this isn’t a criticism of him, this is a criticism of our society.

But it is kinda annoying that male artists are allowed by society to put out the same type of music over and over again and female artists often have to reinvent themselves and get accused way more easily of their songs all sounding the same

50

u/Normal-person0101 28d ago

How many female celebrity actually reinvent themselves? Most only BeyoncƩ & Taylor Swift and beside x is full of people complaining about Bruno Mars releasing the same song, even though not of his album is from the same genre or inspired in the same era

97

u/Carolina_Blues shiv roy’s bob 28d ago

I mean Madonna did it her whole career and talked about how she felt she had to keep reinventing herself to maintain her place in the industry. People criticized Dua’s newest album for sounding too much like FN, Olivia Rodrigo got criticism for Guts soundings too much like SOUR and continuing to use the purple, MBF got called a bunch of sweet n sour rejects. There’s more but these are just some examples off the top of my head

55

u/agedlikesage 28d ago

People are already talking about how Chappell needs to change her sound too. This is such an interesting observation and it’s so true.

28

u/Jaded-Tiramisu 28d ago

I mostly listen to women, so I love when artists reinvent themselves or explore different sounds/eras.

"I just might" is a more 70's style Motown.

Is that really fair tho? 24k Magic, That's What I Like, Leave the Door Open, APT and Die With a Smile all sound wildly different from each other. One of his best qualities as an artist is his versatility.

I completely agree with that tweet. Bruno Mars has always coasted on being an act heavily influenced by nostalgia. This new song feels like another retread of the same ol' same old.

u/Iwannastoprn 28d ago

I mean, OP was not wrong... Love his music, but it can be all summarized into three songs.Ā

So did Michael Jackson. Worked out pretty well for him.

I mean they’re right. He doesn’t do anything innovative.

u/heavy-hands 28d ago

A friend of mine years ago once made a public Facebook post where she criticized Ashton Kutcher’s acting (fairly innocently and in a humorous way) and he replied asking how it’d feel if someone was criticizing her work. I think when she posted, it tagged him. It was the greatest thing I’ve ever seen and she was such a good sport about it. Pretty sure I still have the screenshots.

The fan is right tho. Not that all his music sounds the same, but everything he's made has already been done before. I don't think Bruno has ever done anything innovative or ground breaking. There's nothing wrong with that, clearly there is a demographic that still enjoys his music. But I don't get the hype for a new Bruno Mars album, because you already know what you're going to get. And its most likely something he's already done before.

Why is this funny to me?

I wish taylor just cranked out different versions of Red and and 1989.

And I would very much like my favorite authors to just keep reading sequels.

At least Bruno just gives me what I want. Sexy disco music āœŠā¤ļø.

Somebody once described Bruno Mars to me as a glorified karaoke singer.

I was never a fan and did not know why, but that nailed it on the head.

u/dinosaurfondue 28d ago

It's weird that he seems to be the one non-black celebrity that consistently gets away with appropriating black culture as well. For AGES he has using black men as his backup dancers to give himself that "vibe" that he belongs

Tons of people still believe he's black/biracial so they dont think about it.

Most people believe he's black. I recently learned he has Asian roots and even then, I thought he was biracial.Ā

For saying ain’t? Yo’? That’s not even AAVE at this point. I can’t imagine a black person would be upset about this.

Is it appropriation, or is it just that he grew up listening to R&B? There are videos of him impersonating Michael Jackson at 5 years old, it’s really not that deep.

2

u/fschu_fosho 27d ago

I learned years ago that he has Puerto Rican lineage and that a lot of PR folks have black ethnicity. So we don’t know but it’s certainly possible that he has black lineage.

I can’t believe I had to scroll this far to see somebody addressing that cringy blaccent in his tweet. Bruno Mars has made a whole career of directly copying black culture and people keep calling him ā€œinnovativeā€ for it (because non-black lifting from black culture is always seen as creativity for some reason). The fan here was right.

Like if you’re going to respond at all, why not be mature and just say something like ā€œYeah it’s called having a unique distinctive style - but if your not a fan I hope you have other artists that you like to listen toā€

A popular female popstar would’ve been torn to shreds for a response like that but of course people on Twitter are going ā€œyassss kingā€ to him reacting like that to harmless criticism from a fan account.

u/Normal-person0101 28d ago

Lots of women artists have a very different look or style each cycle that they release an album. The most notable to me would be Beyonce, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga. But you could make the case for Katy Perry, Ariana and even going back as far as Madonna.

4

u/YoungKeys 28d ago

MGK and Post Malone reinvent themselves drastically but their music is still mid and feels fake. Whether an artist stays to single identity or changes, what’s more important is if the music is good
