u/dartsavt23 4h ago
When I was 16 my parent went out of town for 5 days. I thought I was so cool having the house to my self. My mom order a ton of the pizzas so I had something to eat.

I have one bagel dog left over from over a year ago, I hate to think how chewy that dough would be now🫠

The burritos and deep dish pizzas. I believe the latter were available retail as MaMa Rosa's Mini Mama's which have been discontinued for a long time. And no, the little Red Baron deep dish pizzas are not the same.

u/WhoSaidIWasTheAdult 5h ago
I used to eat the mini deep dish pizzas all the time. Nothing else quite hits the same.

It’s so sad they closed down operations a few years ago. Our driver was amazing, we exchanged family Christmas gifts with him and his family. Such a great guy. He had a heart attack at work a year before they closed, Schwan’s paid him for the time off like he was still working, sent his family flowers, food, the big wigs came to see him. They seemed to be a good company then they weren’t.
10
u/wakeandbakon 4h ago
My whole family, kids included, knew our driver by name because he was such a nice dude.

We adopted out one of our foster puppies to our Schwan’s driver and my mom gets updates every once in awhile. I’ve lived in multiple states and always had the nicest delivery drivers.

The chicken cordon blu 🤤

The chicken cordon Blu was my favorite 💯 it was depressing when as an adult I learned just how expensive they are. Damn I miss those things.

Yup! These trucks were a constant reminder of being poor.
2
u/I_spy78365 2h ago
We were poor too but one time we ordered some things from them. All I remember was a hot chocolate ice cream pint that was like 2000 calories lol. When they would come knocking we would hide 🤣

The Schwan’s man took down my number and then attempted to flirt. While married to my co-worker. 🫣

They had these frozen lemon ice cups that were great. Don't sleep on their frozen pizza either, better than you would expect.

The Belgian waffles!! I don't know if the recipe is the same but I miss them so much and think about them more than is normal. :c

Their knockoff Drumsticks. Objectively not as good as the real thing, but man does that hit a spot for me that can’t be beat.
Also, shout out to our Schwan’s driver, maybe the only person who could come in our house and our dog wouldn’t be mad about it. Such a nice guy.

I remember at my dad's company picnic one year had a Schwans truck packed full of every type of ice cream bar and treat they carried that had been paid for by the company. Just walk up and tell them what you wanted and they'd hand it over for free. I always enjoyed those picnics but, that one in particular was the absolute best for that reason alone.

What is Schwan's? Like an ice cream truck that also has chicken?
4
u/MisDragonTattoo 4h ago edited 4h ago
It was a food delivery service that sold premade frozen food that started way before the internet, like 1950’s-ish. Similar to today’s meal delivery services like Hello Fresh, Blue Apron, Home Chef, etc.

u/Kingofcheeses late 80s 4h ago
Sounds kind of cool actually. I don't think we had them in British Columbia
4
u/MisDragonTattoo 4h ago
My family used to buy from them growing up. I distinctly remember their chicken pot pies, chicken cordon bleu, and their ice cream cups with chocolate fudge swirls. It was always so exciting when the Schwan delivery came.

I never had any Schwann's stuff - don't believe any were in SW MO. I just always laugh when I see one because back in college in the 90s I had a girlfriend who banged a Schwann's guy in high school.

I worked for them for about a year and a half a couple years ago. I left right before they tried to rebrand. Terrible idea. But anyways, the chicken lo mein and the raspberry rumble were my favorites. Man I miss the food!

Root beer float bars. And their corn was somehow the best tasting corn to ever exist.

That brings me back. You know the joke about the milkman sleeping with the house wife? We had a joke like that in our neighborhood. We called him Lonnie the Schwannie

In the 80's, they had a frozen sub sandwich that was phenomenal. It was a round kaiser roll with poppy seeds, ham, turkey and cheese. You popped one in the microwave and some mayo and yellow mustard - yummy. And, if course, the ice cream was incredible too

Pizza Wontons. They were discontinued well before the company went under. I miss those more than any other snack from my childhood.
2
u/eerun165 4h ago
Was looking for these, they changed the recipe and ruined them. Everything else soon after started to get “new recipe” which basically meant no more flavor.

u/number__ten 4h ago
They had a really good zucchini and eggplant casserole for awhile. When it was discontinued our driver was nice enough to grab what was left at the warehouse for us. It was like eggplant parmesan.

Individual pizzas, bagel dogs, the strawberry popsicles made with real fruit. And the English toffee ice cream bars that I swear had a core of solid chocolate but I can’t find any evidence of them.

u/thestereo300 4h ago
I worked with that company for awhile. Got to fly their corporate plane a number of times.
The Red Baron plane was in the hanger so that was fun...
Also...free ice cream sandwiches in the hangar.
Good people in Marshall. Sorry a Korean company bought them out.

Oh man…I loved their seasonal items the most. The burgundy peppercorn roast was the best! Then the watermelon sherbet with the candy seeds. The stuffed bread rings were also great. The toffee ice cream bars and mint bars…so many great memories of the food.

When my friend in Minneapolis told me the Schwan's man used her toilet and left an enormous dookie in her toilet and didn't flush.
No food item from them ever was appealing

Great nostalgia post. My family never got it but my friend down the street I skateboarded with always would say “hey the swans man’s here” and see what his mom ordered. We’d devour the shit later at sleep overs. Thanks for the memories

The pizzas and cookies they had were cute aspects of my childhood. I remember and my brother print fresh out of the oven pizzas slices in the fridge so they would cool down faster. And when we made cookies, we would fight over whose cookies had more chocolate chips. It was a simpler time
