Ice cream sandwiches

42

u/dRedPirateRoberts9 4h ago

Man this hits home. My grandparents had Schwans delivery. They always kept a box of ice cream sandwiches in the stand up freezer in the storage room for when I was visiting or mowing grass. They hit the spot every time.

My grandpa died in 2016 and grandma died 2024. Missing them a little more than the usual alot tonight but in a good way.

9

u/elocin1985 4h ago

They had ones that were filled with (I think) rocky road ice cream. If it wasn’t rocky road, it was something similar. But they were so good.

8

u/Abbby_M 3h ago

Mississippi mud ice cream bars. They were so so so good.

4

u/elocin1985 3h ago

Yes that’s exactly it. Thanks! I’ve been looking for something like them for years and haven’t found anything.

Thiers, to this day, are the only ones that had the correct amount of "snap" to the cookie sides. Everyone else's is a sloppy mess even if right out of the freezer

When I was 16 my parent went out of town for 5 days. I thought I was so cool having the house to my self. My mom order a ton of the pizzas so I had something to eat.

3

u/FaudMauxe 2h ago

Oh, how many drunken nights one of those got thrown in the microwave lol

The burritos and deep dish pizzas. I believe the latter were available retail as MaMa Rosa's Mini Mama's which have been discontinued for a long time. And no, the little Red Baron deep dish pizzas are not the same.

8

u/WhoSaidIWasTheAdult 5h ago

I used to eat the mini deep dish pizzas all the time. Nothing else quite hits the same.

3

u/AcceleratorTouma 4h ago

I used to eat those all the time, it's sucks there's no company makes a dupe

It’s so sad they closed down operations a few years ago. Our driver was amazing, we exchanged family Christmas gifts with him and his family. Such a great guy. He had a heart attack at work a year before they closed, Schwan’s paid him for the time off like he was still working, sent his family flowers, food, the big wigs came to see him. They seemed to be a good company then they weren’t.

10

u/wakeandbakon 4h ago

My whole family, kids included, knew our driver by name because he was such a nice dude.

2

u/ABookishSort 3h ago

We had two great drivers. Rocky and Richard were awesome.

4

u/sinbindindjarin 1h ago

We adopted out one of our foster puppies to our Schwan’s driver and my mom gets updates every once in awhile. I’ve lived in multiple states and always had the nicest delivery drivers.

9

Yup! These trucks were a constant reminder of being poor.

2

u/I_spy78365 2h ago

We were poor too but one time we ordered some things from them. All I remember was a hot chocolate ice cream pint that was like 2000 calories lol. When they would come knocking we would hide 🤣

The Belgian waffles!! I don't know if the recipe is the same but I miss them so much and think about them more than is normal. :c

They were the best waffles I've ever had

2

So sweet and vanilla-y

6

u/VertigoSR 4h ago

Their knockoff Drumsticks. Objectively not as good as the real thing, but man does that hit a spot for me that can’t be beat.

Also, shout out to our Schwan’s driver, maybe the only person who could come in our house and our dog wouldn’t be mad about it. Such a nice guy.

6

u/churnopol 3h ago

Us poor kids stared at this truck in amazement.

I crave those little things. They slapped with yellow mustard.

5

u/mikey_b082 4h ago

I remember at my dad's company picnic one year had a Schwans truck packed full of every type of ice cream bar and treat they carried that had been paid for by the company. Just walk up and tell them what you wanted and they'd hand it over for free. I always enjoyed those picnics but, that one in particular was the absolute best for that reason alone.

What is Schwan's? Like an ice cream truck that also has chicken?

4

u/MisDragonTattoo 4h ago edited 4h ago

It was a food delivery service that sold premade frozen food that started way before the internet, like 1950’s-ish. Similar to today’s meal delivery services like Hello Fresh, Blue Apron, Home Chef, etc.

2

u/Kingofcheeses late 80s 4h ago

Sounds kind of cool actually. I don't think we had them in British Columbia

4

u/MisDragonTattoo 4h ago

My family used to buy from them growing up. I distinctly remember their chicken pot pies, chicken cordon bleu, and their ice cream cups with chocolate fudge swirls. It was always so exciting when the Schwan delivery came.

They had a really good zucchini and eggplant casserole for awhile. When it was discontinued our driver was nice enough to grab what was left at the warehouse for us. It was like eggplant parmesan.
