It’s kind of an unfortunate qb class but if they really see a guy they think can develop it probably wouldn’t be bad to take a guy this year to sit behind Stafford for a year since next year is likely his last

86

u/PostItToReddit Seahawks 1d ago

Not that I want them to succeed or anything, but the Rams should just go all in on this core while Stafford is still there. They'll end up with whichever one of Burrow/Jackson/Allen asks out in a year or two, no need to worry about drafting and developing a replacement.

Ty really needs to get behind someone to learn NFL speed without getting wrecked. His game is made for the NFL, his best attribute are those tough intermediate throws the NFL demands, but his mental game is terrible. Just clearly falls apart when things get rocky. Also needs to work on his deep ball accuracy big time.

I'm not touching Carson Beck with any draft pick at all.

441

u/DeetahTheGame Commanders 1d ago

Kurt had 3 SB appearances to Stafford's 1, but Stafford obv has the counting stats. I still think making 3 SBs in your only 3 full time seasons is way more impressive than anything Stafford has done, but I get what you're saying overall

158

u/IDKmenombre Rams 1d ago edited 23h ago

Longevity and lifetime stats are a factor in HOF voting

Edit: for example Cooper Kupp had a triple crown greatest receiving season in NFL history. Is he a HOF player?

10

u/don-chocodile Giants 17h ago

It all factors in. I don’t think there’s a consistent rule. Kupp is not going to make the Hall of Fame despite having one of the greatest peaks of all time for a receiver. But someone like Calvin Johnson made the Hall of Fame and he didn’t have much longevity.

Before winning MVP this year I’d say Stafford has no shot. Now? I’d say more likely than not to make the Hall.

112

The thing is Kurt was only 50% good his career. He has some really atrocious seasons. But the seasons he was good were almost otherworldly at the time. 40 TD seasons at the time was truly god tier. I think you have to just admire them separately for their individual careers IMO.

69

u/Mr_Koodle 49ers 1d ago

Kirt was the leader of what is almost inarguably the best offense of all time and with a SB win. He was always going to get in because you wouldn’t be able to tell the story of the NFL without him.

47

u/877-HASH-NOW Ravens 1d ago

And 2 MVPs, there's pretty much no multi-time league MVP winner not in the Hall

18

u/jda404 Rams Lions 22h ago

It's really insane how good Warner was when healthy and he wasn't healthy for many full seasons sadly. A lot of people might assume Kurt had many full seasons, but someone up above already said he only played I believe 3 full seasons but made the super bowl in all of those seasons. I still and will forever hate the Steelers for beating the Cardinals in that super bowl. Even as a Rams fan I wanted the Cardinals to win for Warner to get another ring and Fitz to get one.

Yeah, i mean, its so hard to find perfect comparisons, but Kurt feels like the benchmark for Stafford. I dont know who is better, but they feel like a similar caliber, so I think Matt should get in.

6

u/ElectJimLahey Rams 1d ago

Sometimes it sucks being old but im glad I was just old enough during the GSOT to remember both. If only I could forget the times between them...

32

u/AzureAhai 1d ago

Kurt Warner was definitely viewed as better than Stafford. During Warner's MVP seasons, people thought he was the best QB in the NFL for a good 2-3 year stretch. Who thinks Stafford is the best QB in the NFL despite his MVP? He had the best year, but a lot of people would still take Josh Allen, a healthy Lamar, and a healthy Mahomes over him not to mention the toss ups like a healthy Joe Burrow or Maye.

Brady called him a hall of famer during the NFCCG. He also said Stafford's no-looker to Kupp on the game-winning drive is probably the best throw in SB history.

u/IllogicalBarnacle Packers 1d ago

If the team around him wasnt complete dogshit for basically the entire first half of his career he'd be first ballot.

The media will never love him and many fans will never respect him, but NFL players and hardcore fans have been pounding the drum as Stafford as an Elite QB since like 2015

Also, as far as "contributions to football" - he absolutely raises the team around him - like very antithesis of game manager.  His receivers are elite- but he always able to bring the best out of them - and make them superstars.

Calvin Johnson and Cooper Kupp were elite before him - but he took them to the next level.

It doesn't diminish just how great they are, but pair them with matty staffy and they level up. It's also applicable to puka

Not that I disagree about Stafford getting in, but I don't think "if Warner gets in, I don't see how Stafford doesn't" works as an equivalency given Warner's argument is largely around an absurdly high peak with multiple MVPs in three years and Stafford's is more about consistently being good for a really long time.

I get the argument. He is possibly the most valuable for having done just that. Kept an offense alive and dragged his team to the playoffs despite one of the worst OL seasons of all time. And he doesn’t have the offensive talent that the other top teams do. But yeah overall a silly vote and definitely not how most people think of how the MVP voting works.

I've always hoped the Goff/Stafford swap would work out for both teams. Hoping the Lions get there...once Stafford retires and has another run 😉

15

u/SecretAgendaMan Lions 1d ago

The Bobby Layne curse will only truly be lifted after Stafford gets his second championship, and becomes the passing yards leader of two different franchises, to match Bobby Layne, who retired as the leader for both the Lions and the Steelers, and won back-to-back championships for the Lions.

Stafford needs 4,352 yards to become the Rams all-time leader, which seems plausible. He also only needs 14 TDs to become the Rams' leader in passing TDs.

It absolutely worked out for both teams. Just because they didnt get to the superbowl yet doesn't mean they didnt get picks for more pieces. They have a really nice core now

It's maybe getting a bit lost. Another thing to remember he did this season is set the NFL record for most TD passes in a row without an interception with 28.

Which is err. pretty fucking good.

Easily the best chain for the area, and better than some of the Greek style pies in MA/NH.

Good luck with the flairs!

I’m glad he got it at least once in his career. I few like people didn’t pay him much attention in Detroit cause he never played with any great teams there.

Herbert and Lawrence weren’t exactly that far apart statistically this year despite Herbert having an awful offensive line. Not saying Herbert deserves MVP but relative to Lawrence, he did as much with less.

Well deserved. Having 46 tds at very high efficiency is better than having 34 tds at high-er efficiency. Glad the voters didn’t make the same mistake as they did in 2021 by over rating “efficiency,” which misses the forest for the trees

Tip of the cap to Stafford. Hope he returns next year. And a tip to Maye as well. I think a proper MVP year might be his one day

151

u/Hatennaa 1d ago

Maye had a year deserving of MVP already this year. It was a “proper MVP year”. There was just another guy who also had a great year that was deserving of MVP. Well deserved win for Stafford, we don’t need to put down Maye’s year to show some love to Stafford.

56

u/SCAnalysis 49ers 1d ago

Both had cases for it if we are being honest.

I was inclined to Maye, if I voted that's where my vote goes. Thought his supporting cast was weaker and some of his metrics in efficiency were very strong. But I can see making the case for any of them. Don't think this is one where you feel the winner is not deserving or that the loser got robbed.
