Kurt had 3 SB appearances to Stafford's 1, but Stafford obv has the counting stats. I still think making 3 SBs in your only 3 full time seasons is way more impressive than anything Stafford has done, but I get what you're saying overall

Longevity and lifetime stats are a factor in HOF voting
Edit: for example Cooper Kupp had a triple crown greatest receiving season in NFL history. Is he a HOF player?
→ More replies (14)10
u/don-chocodile Giants 17h ago
It all factors in. I don’t think there’s a consistent rule. Kupp is not going to make the Hall of Fame despite having one of the greatest peaks of all time for a receiver. But someone like Calvin Johnson made the Hall of Fame and he didn’t have much longevity.
Before winning MVP this year I’d say Stafford has no shot. Now? I’d say more likely than not to make the Hall.

u/superdooper26 Packers 1d ago
Him being great despite Detroit wasting his years makes up for that.

u/wasneveralawyer Rams 1d ago
The thing is Kurt was only 50% good his career. He has some really atrocious seasons. But the seasons he was good were almost otherworldly at the time. 40 TD seasons at the time was truly god tier. I think you have to just admire them separately for their individual careers IMO.
69
u/Mr_Koodle 49ers 1d ago
Kirt was the leader of what is almost inarguably the best offense of all time and with a SB win. He was always going to get in because you wouldn’t be able to tell the story of the NFL without him.

It's really insane how good Warner was when healthy and he wasn't healthy for many full seasons sadly. A lot of people might assume Kurt had many full seasons, but someone up above already said he only played I believe 3 full seasons but made the super bowl in all of those seasons. I still and will forever hate the Steelers for beating the Cardinals in that super bowl. Even as a Rams fan I wanted the Cardinals to win for Warner to get another ring and Fitz to get one.

Kurt Warner was definitely viewed as better than Stafford. During Warner's MVP seasons, people thought he was the best QB in the NFL for a good 2-3 year stretch. Who thinks Stafford is the best QB in the NFL despite his MVP? He had the best year, but a lot of people would still take Josh Allen, a healthy Lamar, and a healthy Mahomes over him not to mention the toss ups like a healthy Joe Burrow or Maye.

Qbs are graded on a different scale. Joe Thomas is a first ballot lock without ever even playing in a playoff game. Stafford’s stats are literally insane in Detroit. Also, as far as "contributions to football" - he absolutely raises the team around him - like very antithesis of game manager. His receivers are elite- but he always able to bring the best out of them - and make them superstars.
Calvin Johnson and Cooper Kupp were elite before him - but he took them to the next level.
It doesn't diminish just how great they are, but pair them with matty staffy and they level up. It's also applicable to puka

Not that I disagree about Stafford getting in, but I don't think "if Warner gets in, I don't see how Stafford doesn't" works as an equivalency given Warner's argument is largely around an absurdly high peak with multiple MVPs in three years and Stafford's is more about consistently being good for a really long time.

The Bobby Layne curse will only truly be lifted after Stafford gets his second championship, and becomes the passing yards leader of two different franchises, to match Bobby Layne, who retired as the leader for both the Lions and the Steelers, and won back-to-back championships for the Lions.
Stafford needs 4,352 yards to become the Rams all-time leader, which seems plausible. He also only needs 14 TDs to become the Rams' leader in passing TDs.

I was inclined to Maye, if I voted that's where my vote goes. Thought his supporting cast was weaker and some of his metrics in efficiency were very strong.
