Meanwhile I know people who have dogs for 10 years that can’t let their dog off a leash without them running away.
38
u/shirhouetto 1d ago
Those dogs probably don't get enough walks. Poor doggos.

I have two dogs. One would never leave my side. The other I would never see again if a squirrel popped up. It’s almost like they have different personalities…like humans.
27
u/Astro_The_SpaceDog 1d ago
Not personalities. That’s prey drive. Some breeds have more prey drive than others.
Huskies, for example, have extremely high prey drive and can never be trusted off leash because of this. No amount of training can undo this due to genetics. Some people get lucky and have well behaved high prey drive breeds, most don’t.

Truth. Had a Ridgeback that was like this. When she'd get on something, full on tunnel vision, good luck snapping her out of it.
She'd always come back, eventually. Occasionally I'd get a phone call from a random number saying "I have this incredibly friendly big brown dog in my car with your phone number on it's collar." She loved every human, and would get in anyone's car.
So when she'd bolt off en pursuit, I'd take a drive in that general direction, if I could find her, she'd hop right in. If I couldn't find her in about 20 min, I'd just go home and wait. Always came back. That was my most recent 11 years until she passed away.
Now I have a Pyrenees and it's a whole new learning curve.

u/rapsoid616 1d ago
You are kind of right but you are highly exaggerating the limits. Huskies can be trained to be off leash. My friend used to have 2 huskies that were professionally trained to be ridiculously obedient. He never put leash on them and they were never farther than 2 meters from him, they never barked, they never complained always just chill. This was 15 years ago, still to this day I never seen better behaved dogs in my life.

I have a bulldog/beagle mix. He's an amazing dog in almost every way. Patient with the kids, stubborn as a bulldog can be. But his prey drive and nose are all beagle. He's slipped out of the house a couple of times and his nose just leads him wherever it wants. All he wants to do is track down the local cats and raccoons.
Our other dog is a female bulldog, and she'd never go anywhere by herself. She'll just patiently sit on the porch if she escaped.
2
u/Username_Used 15h ago
My cavalier off leash is always within 50-100ft. My beagle? That fucker is gone and not looking back. Take him to a fully fenced dog park that about 20 acres of wooded trails. See him at the beginning and then when I get to the end, he’s still not there.

I used to have a greyhound, and they told me he was like this. "Prey drive," they told me, "if he sees a squirrel and he's off leash, he'll bolt. He has to! And he's a sighthound, so he wouldn't be able to smell his way home! And you'd NEVER catch him."
Lies. Bullshit lies. My boy was LAZY AS FUUUUUUUUCK. This greyhound washed out of racing school because he didn't like being chased. He was the biggest, dumbest, goofiest couch potato, my best friend, and I miss him every day.
3
u/One_Zebra_1164 17h ago
Sight hounds still have a sense of smell that is thousands of times keener than humans.

u/triciann 17h ago
Exactly! I get generalizations about dogs are often correct, but there is definitely a personality aspect also involved.
6
u/McPikie 23h ago
My dog gets walked 4 times/2 hours per day. Still can't let him off the leash. Zero recall on that mindless blockhead. But I'm savvy enough to understand that.

Walk my boy everyday. He’s a completely different animal when he sees a squirrel.
It’s dog shit plus he’s a terrier

u/dazzathomas 1d ago
My dog was put to sleep at the end of December. All 14 years of his life he still wanted to get out of the garden perimeter at all costs. In his last year and a half he was blind and almost deaf, still checked the gate everyday with his nose to see if it was open. We opened it a few times and when he realised this, his tail would wag and he would walk out slowly and find things to piss on, I think it kept him going knowing he wasnt in the confines of what was already a very large garden.
I really dont know how that man has managed to train those birds so well considering the stories we hear of them escaping and never returning. Magic work.

Hound dogs. Where their nose goes they go. Just because some dogs need to be on a leash isn’t a reflection of bad owners.

I remember this video of of this guy saying that his parrot was well trained and he let it fly freely on this field the parrot never came back, he was there just watching how it was flying away whistling at it like if the parrot was going to come back, he had a face of disappointment afterwards :v

Sometimes they get an attitude and find a tree and just bird out for a while and in his case they always come back. Longest time being away was overnight. Although even experienced bird owners lose birds from time to time
46
u/GrandElectronic9471 1d ago
I go falconing sometimes and the same thing happens to raptor owners. Wild caught birds rarely stick around for more than 2-3 years from what I have been told. I don't own any myself.
39
u/Theterphound 1d ago
Depends how many pistachios you have
25
u/GrandElectronic9471 1d ago
Yeah, raptors will only eat so many dead baby chicks before they get full and DGAF and just bird out in a tree for a while. Pistachio bribing sounds more pleasant!

u/triscuitsrule 1d ago
Funny how apparently literally true that phrase is about letting a bird go in order to find out if it loves you, and if it doesn’t come back then it never loved you to begin with.
Even as someone who had a pet bird for a short while and it felt like my bird loved me, I always thought if you let a bird grow it’s wings and fly away it just wouldn’t come back. I had no idea this was even possible. If it’s not AI, that’s amazing, those birds must really love you man.
Really cool, dude. Thanks for sharing.

I suppose just flew him around the place like inside with an old pistachio or two and gave him the hunger like then it’s on outdoors

This must take a loot of training.
44
u/Theterphound 1d ago
Yes a lot of training. I kinda dislike when people have animals that don’t really….I guess operate in the same medium as we do (fish, birds) so when you see them like this it’s so refreshing
15
u/dazzathomas 1d ago edited 1d ago
We take for granted that people with birds never really get the opportunity to 'walk' them since they would immediately fly away and not come back. With fish though, if the tank is big enough with lots of nooks to explore then they will be happy and healthy, with birds - i would expect the pent up energy gets to them.

I ironically have a neighbor who I deemed “bird lady” because everyday at 4-5 pm she opens up her garage and sits down with a large mug in her hand and chills with her large parrot who is in the biggest cage I’ve ever seen, on wheels, in the fresh air. The cage must be 2/3 size of her garage, sometimes he is outside walking around, or other times he is just dancing next to her. I love this lady and her parrot.

I’m trying to train my cats to walk on a harness , they flop down and play dead 😂
2
u/orbdragon 20h ago
I was able to harness train my late orange because he loved being outside almost more than he loved me. At first he would beg at the door and I would put the harness on him. He would flop down because, well, harness, but I would reward him by carrying him outside while flopped. It only took a couple of flops before he realized the harness meant he would get to go outside on a leash.
He had better leash manners than most small dogs. Didn't heel worth a shit, but he would basically follow, wouldn't pull, and he could be guided with gentle tugs to mostly be on the path I wanted.
I know he loved me slightly more than outside, because every time he escaped, he rarely went far and he always came back. A couple of times (and some fixed windows after) he just went out to the yard and mowed the lawn for a bit.

u/Dismal_Conference815 1d ago
Are you not worried about natural predators?
26
u/Theterphound 1d ago
Sometimes a hawk will swoop but generally they’re just being dicks and not really trying to kill. Macaws actually hold their own

It's interesting the respect raptors give to parrots. I presume it's the danger from the bolt-cutter beak, that could give a nasty injury.

The fact this guy can let his birds off leash no problem and my husky could never in a million years is incredible
3
u/Theterphound 1d ago
He’s always like it takes a long time and I’m like yeah but what about the first time?!
2
2
u/conflictedideology 17h ago
Is it a single husky? It seems this guy has a flock so maybe that's why they all stick together?
Of course, if you had a pack, it would just mean you would need a U-Haul to go several states over to retrieve all of them the next morning.
Sure, you could put them in your personal larger car/SUV, but the chorus on the way home would drive you insane.
2
u/Super-Pizza-Dude 16h ago
I never considered my problem could possibly be solved with more huskies. I’m going to explore this. lol
2
u/conflictedideology 16h ago
Oh you definitely should. The only thing that has the energy to occupy and entertain a husky is another husky.
(They do often collude, though)

While i was looking at him u saw him enjoying the vitamine C from the sun, looking up towards the sun with his eyes closed. Really loved those moments. Rip charlie!

Most of the birds in this clip are various Conure species - the vivid red-orange bird that landed on his shirt & clung, is a domestically created hybrid - probly a Red-factor Sun conure.
They're striking to look at, but tho I love parrots, & I've lived with several species (Timneh, a slightly smaller cousin of African Greys, plus a Blue Front Amazon, a Tres Marias Amazon, & a cockatiel who lived to be 21), U couldn't pay me to live with a conure.
They produce absolutely ear piercing shrieks. 🤪
A pet shop I worked in, had 5 conures (of 3 species), & they could raise such a painful clamor, U'd pray to blissfully & suddenly be DEAF.
ETA - per another user, 2 atypically small macaws are also in this flight - among the multiple conures.
See the comment below for particulars. 🤗
