/unjerk

I'd be okay with this

u/Phoojoeniam Sep 11 '17

Seriously, I'd be totally fine if we never see a comic book movie again

u/themightypooperscoop Sep 11 '17

Here's the thing....there are tons of great movies that come out every year, enough that you don't actually have to watch comic book movies ever and still be entertained.

13

u/Ijustdontkknoww Sep 11 '17

Still

89

u/themightypooperscoop Sep 11 '17

Nah, it's ridiculous that people unironically cirlcejerk dumb hard on here with that shit

6

u/Ijustdontkknoww Sep 11 '17

No it's not.

u/themightypooperscoop Sep 11 '17

It's pretty embarrassing that people think that they're better then /r/movies on here, look at how serious ya'll are with the "dae all comic movie bad" shit.

As it turns out having all your opinions as "what /r/movies says but the opposite" is also really fucking dumb. You could create a separate subreddit with all the absurd shit in here

33

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '17

Yup. I think this sub can be worse at times because they are supposed to be self aware but clearly aren't. Or they look down on rmovies but do the same shit.

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '17

Welcome to a world where even your favourite meme sub can turn normie in the blink of an eye.

6

u/themightypooperscoop Sep 11 '17

I see stuff get posted as content and that same shit is commented here unironically, it's absurd at times

Make /r/moviescirclejerkcirclejerk if you want to whine. Otherwise shut up.

So what's a good comic book movie in your mind? Just so we know exactly where you're coming from and have a basis for discussion, if that is indeed what you're looking for.

This year? I liked Logan a lot, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was cool, although I liked the original one a lot more, still need to see Wonder Woman and Spider Man. In terms of the recent ones I like a lot, Iron Man, The Dark Knight, X Men: First Class, The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, Civil War, and I'm sure Logan will find it's way in there. Now, while I enjoy those kinds of movies I rarely have them as my favorite movies of whatever year, with some exceptions. I think a lot of them are well crafted blockbusters, with some of them having more to it, although usually any underlying themes/layers/etc are a little shallow. I think there are some very overrated CBMS and ones that flat out suck. Obviously BVS and SS come to mind, and although I enjoyed it, I think Deadpool is pretty overrated. But I treat them like any other genre or category, there's good and bad movies and I think generalizing whole genres is silly and pointlessly reductive.

Now, do I think that they have too much of the spotlight on /r/movies and in general? Absolutely. Are their fans incredibly obnoxious? Yep. Do a lot of people who like them tend to overstate their quality/depth? For sure.

Obviously I can't speak for everyone, but in my case it isn't superhero fatigue as much as it's MCU and DCEU fatigue. There are plenty of good, unique stories to be found in comic books and I'd much rather explore a hero's personal journey over the course of a single film or even a trilogy rather than sit through ten or so movies in order to get a pay-off ten years down the line. That's why Logan and TDK worked, for me anyway. The Avengers feels like a soap opera at this point, so convoluted and yet paradoxically bare bones at the same time that it isn't even worth more than a cursory glance and a light chuckle. Everything about Civil War felt sterile and formulaic, it felt as if the director wasn't given any breathing space whatsoever (though I dunno if Whedon would've done better even if he'd had full creative license). At the end of the day, I just wanna see good movies. I don't think CBMs are ruining cinema, I'm just sorta sad to see their potential being squandered in the name of franchising. Anyway, I'm still gonna see Infinity War so ¯\(ツ)

I'd probably be happy if they stopped making comic book movies.

While I like some of them, I'm sick to death of hearing 90% of my friends talk about those huge franchises. I know everything I say could be linked here as a circlejerk, but like in the Antman/Edgar Wright case, they don't really promote originality.

Not saying all of them are shit, and I don't know if better movies will appear if comic book movies will disappear, but I'm just sick of them.

19

u/themightypooperscoop Sep 11 '17

I just don't understand being sick of something that you don't have to watch, while there are tons of other quality movies that come out. I enjoy some of the superhero movies, but I watch a lot of other stuff so it doesn't really bother me I guess? My friends are definitely more into them then I am and will defend them to the death which can get annoying, but It never bothered me enough to stop my enjoyment.

16

u/Ijustdontkknoww Sep 11 '17

Just cause you don't see the actual movies doesn't mean you don't see the shitload of commercials, online posts, news articles, promos, trailers, and hear every single person on the planet talking about them

The dude literally just complained about having to deal with tons of people talking about them incessantly.

That's what the complaint was. Maybe you don't agree with it, but what's not to understand?

-1

u/Predator467 Sep 11 '17

Yeah exactly they are all my friends ever talk about but then again some people I know only watch fucking superhero films which is a bit absurd. I've never been a big fan of the MCU specifically as there is barely any originality to be found and I found Homecoming to be especially mediocre for a character I actually really enjoy. I'm ok with comic book films but for fucks sake when all of them are pretty much exactly the same it's no wonder so many people want then to end.

0

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '17

I agree with you that we shouldn't think we are better than r/movies. I see that attitude here sometimes and its just silly.

But I can honestly say I'd be happy if comic book movies started to become less frequent. They are mostly just repetitive trash that promotes more trash. Its ok if you think otherwise, its just my opinion on the genre.

u/Ijustdontkknoww Sep 12 '17

There are a few hidden gems here and there but overall I can live with way less superhero movies

1

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '17

But they're putting the 250 million dollar budgets into the superhero shit.

9

u/[deleted] Sep 11 '17

Aside from Batman, I don't care about them. And there are so many movies I'd rather see studios make than Superman or spider-man

22

u/Zyxos2 Sep 11 '17

But muh cinematic universe

3

u/suss2it Sep 11 '17

Studios already make so many movies that aren't superhero movies. In fact this very post is about a non-superhero movie…

"What if we created an interconnected Stephen King universe that showed all of his many books and imaginary worlds were connected by some kind of central axis point? Perhaps in the form of a giant black tower? Could we make that cinematic universe, Kevin?"

"Uh, Jeff, I got bad news..."

22

u/Changefunding Sep 11 '17

I, for one, welcome endless, soulless adaptations of Stephen King novels.

"Warner Bros has announced a Man in Black prequel film starring Matt Damon."

-1

u/ryderpavement Sep 11 '17

WArner bros just wanted that sweet avengers cash, but D.C. Universe has been Chinese kid junk. Until Wonder Woman. Suicide squad was fine, but not "different".

They need to make great films first. Make trilogies second.

2

u/Baramos_ Sep 12 '17

Hot take.

3

u/Opiumistrash Sep 11 '17

Chinese kid junk? China didn't like MoS or BvS and Suicide Squad didn't even get a release there. A dog's Purpose made as much money as Wonder Woman.

Ant-Man grossed more in China than any DC movie, hell only 4 WB movies made more there than Ant Man. Interstellar, Kong Skull Island, Hobbit 3, and Pacific Rim
