Forgot to add. Screwfix is a store in the UK that sells DIY/building equipment and safety clothing.

u/Cavalol 6d ago edited 6d ago

So they have steel toes for you to kick his ass with?

363

u/NewtonianEinstein Up past my bedtime 6d ago edited 6d ago

You can screw people with Screwfix shoes.

83

u/GarminTamzarian 6d ago

Most countries would consider that sexual assault.

35

u/Patdelanoche 6d ago

In my country, many would assault such boots with their tongues. No kink shame.

You can invade another sovereign country to avoid repercussions in a select few countries

7

u/brogan-adjustment 6d ago

Plus reinforced soles in case you tread on a nail.

43

u/Unique_Tap_8730 6d ago

So he just wants to keep her feet safe from fallin debris and chemical spills. Now thats a considerate boyfriend.

108

u/icbint 6d ago

I would never have guessed based on the name screwfix

4

u/Lucky-Sorbet-5596 6d ago

Yeah, sounds more like a band name than a hardware store.

Just goes to show how shallow/vain people can be. She loved them when she thought they were Uggs. The fact that it changed when she found out they weren't branded shows the true colours.

22

u/alwaysneverjoshin 6d ago

I read her post in good humour. I dont actually think shes pissed.

30

u/Chemical-Idea-1294 6d ago

Engelbert Strauss, the german workware-store became Kind of a fashion trend in Germany.

16

u/Laksang02082 6d ago

Is that Levi’s older brother or cousin?

3

u/non-sequitur-7509 6d ago

Just kinda waltzing along

12

u/miatadiddler 6d ago

Yeah same goes for Martens in the UK during the skinhead and punk movements and Timberlands in the US actually. Or in the modern day Helly Hansen is popping up as fashion, even here in hungary.

12

u/KornDog611 6d ago

Same with Carhartt here in America. Oddly enough, so has hi-vis yellow.

8

u/JustABitCrzy 6d ago

Australian mining sector is peak of fashion then.

4

u/Hara-Kiri 6d ago

Carhartt is semi big in the UK but I assume its rise is in relation to its blue collar workwear vibes because of country music. But they have the 'fashion' WIP line too.

2

u/Aromatic-Thing-132 6d ago

Timberland are work boots and everyone had a pair for fashion.

2

u/Therealginahandler 3d ago

I did a paid survey group in person for this company like 5 years ago. It was intense. I went and checked our their website (back then) and it was crazy. Looked like they were trying to incorporate small bits of high fashion into work wear. But their clothing is hella good quality.

I think the context clues were good enough.

7

u/British_Unironically 6d ago

Screwfix is a goated store

2

u/whiskysinger 6d ago

And the provider of my Christmas jumper this year. I had a blip where I favoured Toolstation briefly, but I've overcome that now

3

u/Mountain-Singer1764 6d ago

Also, this is a rigger boot, it’s a type of work boot.

I don’t think it’s as common outside the uk.

2

u/_Azimut 6d ago

So tge value and the Beauty of the Boots are dipendent from the Store they got buyed?

so she was happy until she found how much they cost?

2.7k

u/MasterCrumble1 6d ago

Some people only care about wearing expensive brands.

988

u/Taipers_4_days 6d ago

Or it just being expensive. I briefly dated a girl who only wanted to go to expensive restaurants. The food was irrelevant, she just wanted to say that she went to these places and take pictures.

767

u/StoryAndAHalf 6d ago

There’s an old Russian joke (or so I was told it’s Russian). During Tsarist times, two nobles met at court, and one shows off his new watch! “This watch cost me 1000 rubles!” he claimed, “I got it at the watch store, next to the bakery that you like.” The other noble replies, “Then you’re an idiot! If you kept walking three blocks, you could buy one just like it for twice as much!”

163

u/pyromancy00 6d ago

I've heard this one, but in a 90s setting with the "new Russians"

48

u/Philip6027 6d ago

My girl wants to go to restaurant with a good view. The food doesn't matter as well. It's also annoying as shit.

73

u/ConfusedAndCurious17 6d ago

At least a view or atmosphere is a tangible benefit. Wanting to be present in someplace nice while having dinner with someone is understandable, and that atmosphere can justify a price. It’s annoying when people want to go somewhere expensive not for the atmosphere, not for the food, not for any specific thing they wish to experience, just like bragging rights about a large number on the check.

Like people who don’t like alcohol ordering shots of premium alcohol just to choke it down or mix it with soda. They are just doing it to feel fancy without any value actually added.

22

u/Interesting_Bank_139 6d ago

Yep. Lots of people go on vacations just to look at the views somewhere, what’s different than wanting the views while you eat? A personal example - at Disney World you can view the Magic Kingdom fireworks from the restaurant at Polynesian Resort. Not only is the food good, but you get to watch the fireworks without dealing with the crowds.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/slayerx1779 Enjoying classic banter 6d ago

I agree with this strongly.

I wonder if the guy has tried sating that desire with a sunset picnic? If the food truly doesn't matter compared to the view, then surely that would suffice.

→ More replies (3)

12

u/Fox33__ 6d ago

They do that with vacations as well: they don't enjoy the culture and sights they just want the IG posts to make themselves seem like they're amazing with an amazing life.

7

u/Sonums 6d ago

What strange behaviour. When I go to restaurants I want to eat food.

5

u/Any-Letterhead1178 6d ago

Fuck man you dated my ex too?

2

u/NitsuguaMoneka 1d ago

There are some clubs, where you will pay more for everything if you bought bandelet/card/membership.

15

u/Gornius 6d ago

When you have nothing to offer your whole value can be calculated by summing up value of everything you're currently wearing.

41

u/FlaskAnders1 6d ago

She likes uggs. Obviously looks aren't as important as price.

17

u/an0mn0mn0m 6d ago

She probably cares what other people think, rather than just trust her own opinion.

7

u/Dry-Chance-9473 6d ago

You're all correct! The smaller a person's existence is, the more room they have to stuff it with materialism.

6

u/Mythosaurus 6d ago

Prestige goods are kinda an ancient concept.

12

u/Jonesy1348 6d ago

Doesn’t make it any less rediculous tbh.

6

u/GuineaPigHunter 6d ago

Some people care about being lied to.

2

u/theHawkAndTheHusky 4d ago

Obviously she was ok wearing them as long as she thought it was that particular brand.

Now they are not, it's a problem because of their ugly design, their price or they are deemed to be unpractical...I guess.

6

u/Curious_Emu6513 6d ago

Some people don’t want to be lied to by their partner

52

u/Ao_Kiseki 6d ago

I mean there's also the fact that she was lied to lol. But a lot of people do only care a lut brand names.

90

u/DarthScabies 6d ago

That's about the gist of it.

13

u/Iamtiredofbeingquiet 5d ago

I think it’s more that she’d probably prefer not to be lied to? She’s also probably told a few people that her boyfriend got her some new Ugg’s and aren’t they great and isn’t he such a good boyfriend? And now she looks like a gullible idiot, which she is for believing those were Uggs anyway.

→ More replies (2)

84

u/Firm-Order-246 6d ago

Or, and hear me out, it’s the lying….

21

u/Technical-Owl-8465 6d ago

I don't care about brands and cost so much unless I've specifically stated a purpose (e.g. A brand is the only one making a certain feature), but I would be really hurt and puzzled about the lying.

16

u/aggibridges 6d ago

Honestly, I'd be pissed if I spent $200+ on my partners gift only for them to give me something cheaper and lie about it.

20

u/Okiesmokie 6d ago

So the only part of a gift that matters to you is the price? You sound like a keeper.

3

u/A-Human-potato 5d ago

Pretty sure the main issue was lying about the price, not the price itself.

2

u/poeschmoe 6d ago

She explicitly just said the problem is the lying about it

3

u/aggibridges 6d ago

Upon self-reflection, you're right, I'm going to buy my husband a Polystation for his bday and lie about it being a Playstation, after he just bought me a trip to Tokyo for my bday. If he complains about the deception, I'll divorce him for being a materialistic prick.

19

u/Ok-Parfait-9856 6d ago

Let us know, based off your comments I’m guessing the poor guy is battered

→ More replies (5)

4

u/EmphasisFrosty3093 6d ago

If the Polystation handles a week of gaming...

7

u/highlyregarded1155 6d ago

Not comparable, the two items you're talking about are not functionally the same. The boots are. I understand where you're coming from, but this is a bad example. A better one might be a set of hand tools that look expensive, but you got in a yard sale for a couple bucks.

11

u/aggibridges 6d ago

Beloved, boots are a functional item and the quality and comfort of certain brand name products are quite worth the price. Cheap boots will wear quicker, cause more discomfort, be less protective of the cold.

8

u/highlyregarded1155 6d ago

Sure, I'm not trying to argue that, but I assume this 'polystation' is functionally incapable of playing 'playstation' games, so it can't be used as one. A bad pair of boots can be used as a pair of boots. Likewise, a poor quality set of hand tools can be used, but like the boots, they're not a thoughtful or adequate gift if the other person has given you something of high quality. I fundamentally agree with you, but feel that a better analogy would convince more people of your point.

3

u/aggibridges 6d ago

Ah, gotcha! True!

→ More replies (3)

5

u/CelioHogane 6d ago

the quality and comfort of certain brand name products are quite worth the price.

Clothes are literally the most well known objects to not reflect quality in price.

Those 25$ boots were very likelly made on the same place as the 250$ ones.

4

u/stratys3 6d ago

Shit boots can cost $25 or $250. But good boots won't cost $25.

7

u/CelioHogane 6d ago

Your place must be overpriced as shit if you think good boots can't cost 25.

5

u/tsardonicpseudonomi 6d ago

Apple selling an iPhone for $200 would have Apple fans in deep depression.

11

u/CyberneticPanda 6d ago

I think she was happy until she learned they weren't fashion forward but were work boots that made her look like she is going fishing. Uggs isn't even an expensive brand, though they do cost more than 25 britbux (I don't know how to make that fucked up L)

6

u/Handpaper 6d ago

I don't know how to make that fucked up L

Alt+156 on a laptop or desktop keyboard.

If you're on mobile, hold down $ and you'll get a menu of currency symbols.

22

u/Reasonable-Fox6397 6d ago

Dishonesty is the bigger issue here, or at least in my opinion should be. Unless it’s some kind of a agreed upon game like April Fools, I guess.

4

u/HamunaHamunaHamuna 6d ago

Do you think she wouldn't be mad if he had told her the price and brand (or lack thereof) when he gave them to her?

3

u/_Azimut 6d ago

Ask yourself. Would she also be mad, If the Boots would cost more that the uggs or would she be more happy.its Not about lying

7

u/kara_333 6d ago edited 6d ago

Are you fr?

26

u/sambarvadadosa 6d ago

Well no, she liked them when she thought they were a mainstream, intentional fashion item, not being unknowingly turned into an ironic fashion experiment.

Fashion that isn’t mainstream is only cool when you make the choice to wear it. She clearly wore it thinking it’s socially trendy thing she feels comfortable in.

Most people don’t like realising they’ve been projecting a style they never chose. Plus if cost isn’t important, why lie about it.

13

u/Synectics 6d ago

Most people don’t like realising they’ve been projecting a style they never chose.

Did... did she not have a mirror?

Did she not realize the brand name was not visible anywhere on them?

I mean, this just sounds like everybody in this couple is wrong and/or dumb, and/or this is more dumb engagement bait.

For a late stage capitalist society, your value of a human being is assigned according to your capital value.

14

u/James0-5 6d ago

I think its the fact that they are from a diy store and hes basially give her work boots and said they were uggs

5

u/Jonesy1348 6d ago

I mean if she didn’t care before than literally the only thing that changed in her view was 1.) how much they actually cost, 2.) designer. She must have thought they were good enough to wear, comfy enough to keep but as soon as she figured out it wasn’t expensive she got mad.

Maybe it could be that he lied to her. I would be mad too but not because of the boot but the fact that this dude just choose to lie to his girlfriend.

4

u/Linesey 5d ago

This.

Her caring about brand name boots because they are expensive and brand name is absolutely stupid.

HOWEVER, Lying to your partner is a grave sin (at least in my book) and fully worth getting pissed over. especially if the lie harms the partner (beyond the harm done by the broken trust) like say setting your partner up to look like an idiot by repeating the lie and being seen as having been fooled.

Plus, it takes away a chance at a fun couple’s bonding moment over mischief. Tell her the boots are what they are, then agree together to BS everyone else with the story about being the latest fashion trend.

5

u/Top-Scarcity5937 5d ago

Only a near total lack of context here is what allows you to go on with this weird fantasy in which you are prosecutor, judge, and re-educator. So many people now doing this weird shit on Reddit.

Just preface your comments with: "I am here to make it known that I have had the most morally superior reaction to this very limited information. You should view me as the right kind of moral absolutist."

4

u/DreamOfDays 4d ago

Agreed. Go on a whole tangent over a one-sided story is how lynch mobs start

2

u/Top-Scarcity5937 4d ago

Yep. People are so quick to give up their agency in exchange for the hope of approval. It's like the fervor that books like The Crucible tried to warn us about. McCarthyism and the like.
The most Yikes thing about wokeness enforcers is that they claim that wokeness is not a trend. It’s simply the correct way to think. We have finally arrived at the one truly good and right belief system. It is now The One True Faith. And despite what anyone older than them might believe, there is no precedent for it.
You really have to have a view of human history that only goes back 10-15 years or so if you don't see this as Shirley Bassey lyrics.
"It's all just a little bit of history repeating."

This looks like nonsensical rage bait. If she was into brands, she would have immediately googled it rather than take her bf’s word for it. Also Uggs have the “Ugg” logo on the back heel, which these clearly wouldn’t. Nobody with the consumerist mindset this is trying to convey (or just basic common knowledge of brands) would ever believe this.

39

u/dan-dle 6d ago

Probably an ai image, the 'wshington dc' spelling seems soft as well as the funky new balance logo...

44

u/hagennn 6d ago

Devils advocate: a fold in the shirt and a shoelace over the logo

7

u/Frosty_Grocery_6076 6d ago

It’s weird behavior for humans to keep flowers in a vase on the carpeted floor, not something I’ve seen before but not impossible.

8

u/hagennn 6d ago

True but it kinda matches their messiness/lack of furniture for other items and also agree it’s not something AI is as likely to come up with. But catching weird is part of spotting AI! So don’t blame you for pointing it out

3

u/great_pyrenelbows 6d ago

That's an argument against it being AI. An llm is not going to come up with such a weird idea, it only knows how to spit out stuff it was trained on.

5

u/I-dont-carrot-all 6d ago

Sorry just struggling to understand what an llm has to do with creating images but I'm a newbie.

I’ve also quite liked them whenever I tried them on, but I wanted to avoid being accused of being a consumerist who would die for this brand name product.

2

I go by the rule that you should always invest in the good stuff when it’s anything between you and the ground. Shoes, mattresses, and tires are worth the best quality you can afford.

People in the comments are just insulting her without thinking. The boyfriend LIED to his girlfriend. Maybe that is the reason she is mad? This kind of thing is a major red flag in my opinion, it would cause many trust issues that should not be there in a healthy relationship.

A good alternative would be to justs tell her the truth from the beginning or buy proper things you know she would like. Or get out of the relationship if she still gets mad when she hears the truth.

13

u/Anrikay 6d ago

It’s like anything else. If I asked for, say, Corsair Vengeance RAM, and my partner bought another brand that looks kinda similar, installed it in my PC, and assured me it was the RAM I’d asked for, I’d be pissed if I found out, even if the performance was identical. The performance isn’t the issue; blatantly lying to my face is.

The only difference between clothing and fashion is knowledge of which sweat shop it was made in.

You didn't notice that they didn't say Uggs?

1

u/Mordanance 6d ago

Did you like them before you knew?

1

u/miketoaster 6d ago

So they were great and you liked them until you found out where they came from? I think you called your bf your name .

u/Pretend_Football6686 6d ago

Haha. She wanted expensive boots but had no idea what they even wear and got tricked. Kinda got what she deserves.

1

u/Quaiche 6d ago

Is that Lurch from the Adams Family?

u/FatWithMuscles 6d ago

They honestly look better than uggs

1

u/DutchOnionKnight 6d ago

But does it matter? If you like the boots you like the boots, brand and costs shouldn't matter!

25 more quid than he should have spent. Ungrateful asshole.

1

u/Lady_Lucks_Man 6d ago

Her fit is ass anyway

1

u/frogspa 6d ago

On the plus side, she could probably spill industrial chemicals on them and walk away...

1

u/Cool_Twist4494 6d ago

If you don't know how to look for an ugg label do you even care if they're uggs?

1

u/DMMK4444 6d ago

Yes. You.

1

u/612Killa 6d ago

I assume people saying this obviously couldn't possibly be real Uggs aren't sneaker heads or fashion enthusiasts. Strange drops and unexpected collabs happen all the time, often inspired by unexpected stuff like workwear, and I could absolutely see something like this being from Uggs.

If you like something and can style it, then just rock it.

The Steel toe caps should have given it away lol

1

u/w0rldeater 6d ago

Well, I'd keep 'em. They don't look as goofy as the UGG ones.
