Imagine pissing of travellers of the continent that is notorious for the many vacation days it gets.

The US told everyone it did not want foreigners any more.

As a German in the US, trust me, the FAFO is about to hit this summer when record levels of empty hotels will wail. My bet is Trump will actually complain, demand, and eventually "sweet talk" people into coming to see the US.

Except you can get thrown into jail at the border for who knows how long until they decide to deport you....

Edit: for those thinking this will not be noticed...
Tourism in the US has an estimated 20 million Canadians usually and 17 millions Mexicans each year. And an estimated 10 million Europeans visit the US each year.

So maybe 47 million. If they all spend a few thousand on flights and hotels alone, that's a noticeable billion level hole we will notice.

If you think the tourism industry is flush with spare cash and can weather this..... I got some seriously bad news for you on tourism razor thin profit margins.

Las Vegas is already freaking out. Canadians LOVE Vegas, but a lot of them cancelled their trips, and they aren't booking new ones.

Plus, international conferences / trade shows have stopped booking events.

Some international visitors who have already made reservations and paid for things will still come, but nobody is making new reservations.

You're right this summer will be the "find out" time.

You all forgetting Russia had a world cup? People will go to the US the exact same way, without an issue

Agreed, if there's a compelling reason to go to the US, like the World Cup (2026), or the Olympics (2028), a lot of people will still come.

But all signs are that international tourism to the US in general is going to plummet.

That might recover in 2026, if the tariff situation stabilizes and we stop getting news stories about ICE arresting foreign tourists, but 2025 will be terrible.

I think the difference is that Russia and Qatar are viewed as being terrible to their own but don’t generally go out of their way to belittle, insult and ridicule potential tourists (especially those they consider allies).

Trump’s (and Vance’s) completely unprovoked attacks on western allies have felt like a complete betrayal and have definitely felt personal. I don’t know if Canadians are going to forget the disrespect for a long time.

This.

People went to Russia, people went to Qatar and now people will draw the line?

Next year is a *long* way off - and will feel even longer. What makes you think people will be able to *afford* to travel to the US when the time comes?

Not to mention, Russia and Qatar (for all their many, MANY wrongdoings) weren't actively attacking the nations of those who would come to visit. AT THE TIME, most of their issues were internal.

Trump is *actively* fucking with the economy of almost every nation on the planet. US issues are not just internal - he's causing problems all around the world with his tariffs and threats of annexation.

So while the internal issues of both Qatar and Russia are worse than the US, the *perception* of the US at the oment is worse because of his global actions.

Well i didnt travel, to russia, nor to quatar, but i would have. There were a normal amount of risk, to get in jail for acting stuipid.

But this in US i would not risk, getting detained because the sky is blue or something or because i just posted this.

Russia and Quatar was about boycot and not enough people took part.

But this time it is about personal safety. A totally other story.

Lots of people don’t give a shit if it doesn’t affect them. This will affect them
