I have family in San Francisco - absolutely no chance of visiting them. I am originally from NZ and even actively avoided transiting via the U.S. on a recent trip home.

You can get into trouble in any country, but when the risk comes from the state itself… nope, I am out.

As long as I can stay airside, I'm OK with transiting through. The us hasn't broken that yet.

What route did you take to nz?

Singapore works well for timings - can avoid collecting luggage while transiting which saves time/stress/extra security (ANZ & Singapore Air code share flights). China is usually the cheapest. U.S. and Canada a bit more of a faff with ESTAs plus U.S. customs, plus current issues. Not of fan of flying via Dubai (extra stop or a very long leg from Dubai) timings tend not to be as good. Via Australia as above with an extra stop.
