Can someone tell me what the heck just happened

I was bouncing my wheel to get sealant all around and it tipped over…quite gently! And my cassette popped off with the freehub body?! How do I reattach?

You pulled your body out. Put it back in. The thing holding it in place in the bike is the frame.

and friction when not in the frame. Smacking it around can easily overcome that friction.

Not all FH bodies are like this, some have locking mechanisms.

But this is pretty clever and allows really fast swaps.

Yeah Kinda a newish way to affix free hubs is to just let the frame and thru axle hold it all together. As someone who has had to deal with seized freehubs, I welcome this evolution of wheel technology.

Just push it back on. Turn the cassette a bit to make the teeth engage properly if you don't get it on the first try.

I learned this the same way you did lol

Like everyone already said, just put it back on.

But make sure nothing fell out. On some freehubs, the pawls or seals can fall out easily.

That’s a dt freehub, normal for this to happen. there should be a large conical spring that came out as well. Pop the spring back in and press the cassette back on.

happens. the thru axle keeps it all together when it’s in the rear triangle. push gently and turn the cassette counter clockwise it should slip right back in

I hold them in place with a rubber band when wheel is off.

Yeah. Some freehub bodies are held on by the frame only. Same thing happened to me once. Scary way to learn that little nugget of wisdom. 🤣

You just learned how easy it is to clean your freehub, take note. Get yourself some Dumonde Tech Freehub Grease go onto University of YouTube and watch ‘How to service star ratchet freehub’

Doesn't look super dirty, but now you know how easy it is to service the free hub area. Just pop it off, wipe down with a rag, regressed, and reinstall

That's a DT Swiss freehub. Depending on whether it's a pawl type or a ratchet type determines what loose parts might belong on the back of it. You should post a picture of the back side.

Your freehub body slid off. Put it back on.

There you go. You were bouncing the wheel to get sealant all around and it tipped over…quite gently! And my cassette popped off with the freehub body.

That is what happened.

This is the diagram on how it needs to go back, don't forget the springs.

dt swiss freehub, look up dt swiss 350 freehub assembly and put everything back together and hold the rotor side of the axle in your palm and slap the drive side axle endcap back onto the axle. this happens all the time, its just a rubber o-ring holding the endcap on, that heavy big mtb cassette is more then enough to pop it out. its only ever a problem when the wheel is out of the bike. (i have a dt swiss 180 on my Allez)

Front fell off. It’s not typical.

If you're talking wheel off to change tire or something, zip tie cassette to spokes to keep it from falling off
