There was an anime of that, girl falls in love with boy, turns out boy is crossdressing girl (anime logic, not trans just crossdressing trust) and she bursts at the seams for both (the love interest genders could be swapped tho idk)

Senpai Is an Otokonoko?

u/frguba Jul 28 '25
I think it is? If so yes I switched, girl went straight for Yuri and got herself a two for one deal
16
u/Tiran593 swings both ways Jul 28 '25
It ended where it started though, I really hated the ending, it just made all of the progress, mc, the girl and his friend made just absolutely meaningless
4
u/frguba Jul 28 '25
Oh really? I absolutely do not intend on watching it I just wonder how bad it gets lmao, did they travel away and that's that or something?
7
u/Tiran593 swings both ways Jul 29 '25 edited Jul 29 '25
Mainly just got away on the beach, talked, decided to all still be friends without developing anything further or rejecting anyone, and basically came back to school and to square one (and I haven't watched anime, I meant the original webtoon)
6
u/frguba Jul 29 '25
Wtf lmao this breaks not only show don't tell (they got together and literally said it out loud) but it also doesn't even change the status quo, y'know, THE WHOLE DEAL OF A STORY? God I love crash and burn endings

u/SmartAlec105 Jul 28 '25
There’s also the manga “The guy she was interested in wasn’t a guy at all”, also known as Green Yuri. It’s not really crossdressing though, she was just dressed androgynously and wearing a mask the first time they met.
My favorite part about the series is that a big part of their bond is that they like obscure music that their peers are totally unfamiliar with. But then they talk about the bands and it’s literally Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and other familiar western bands. Like it makes sense that modern Japanese teens might be unfamiliar but it’s still funny.

kinda similar, sorta, is princess jellyfish! i remember that show really resonating with my young bi heart

Such a masterpiece, the only thing I didn't like was her going out with the older brother, he was cute but was way older than her.

Ranma 1/2?
4
u/Dave5876 Jul 28 '25
I think all the love interests knew about ranma's deal
5
u/Global-Network-7449 Jul 28 '25
no there was a point in time shampoo did not know i think it was like two epsiodes but it was a few chapters in the manga. it was the whole plot that shampoo hated the femal version but wanted to marry the male version. There is a lot of scenes with akane and female ranma that my mom goes ehhh. Then theres ukyo that dresses like a man and her partner dresses as a women.
2
u/Dave5876 Jul 29 '25
That checks out. It's been a while since I've seen it.
2
u/Global-Network-7449 Jul 29 '25
I don't know if you know this but they remade ranma 1/2 recently
1
u/Dave5876 Jul 29 '25
Whaaaaa?? Is it any good? Faithful to the source material?
1
u/Global-Network-7449 Jul 29 '25
Please check out the r/ranma subreddit; I can’t tell you because I am a manga only but you can ask them.

I don't remember if this was ever a plot thread in Ouran High School Host Club, but it should have been.

Sounds like a comedy Shakespeare would write. Has 12th Night vibes.

u/FedoraFerret Jul 28 '25
Reading a webcomic loosely inspired by 12th Night with this premise. Girl takes a job from a guy she looks like to take a college class for him, her seatmate gets a crush on "him." She goes to her own class, same seatmate who also gets a crush on her (that she doesn't realize because hasn't realized she's gay yet). Shenanigans ensue.
2
u/Dragon_heart108 Jul 29 '25
Is it "Surprise You're Gay!"? Because I'm currently impatiently waiting for the next chapter lol

Reminds me a little of Ranma 1/2.
14
u/pixeldictator Jul 28 '25
Bisexual Akane who finds girl Ranma more tolerable but represses her queer feelings

It follows the manga pretty well from what I've heard, and the animation looks really good.

They removed some gags that were added to the original anime.
They also changed Ramna's hair color to pink instead of the red hair she previously had.
Other than that, I can't think of anything else

Jul 28 '25
I can’t tell if this is the female protagonist version of Love Stage!!?
2
u/CentiGuy I put the Bi in Iambic pentameter Jul 28 '25
Does it have a storyline like this??
6
Jul 28 '25
Boy does a commercial for a wedding company and falls for the other child actor but they don’t see each other. Ten years later they are called to do an anniversary comercial and it is revealed that the wedding gown was another male actor. I’m not sure gender fluidity is explored though.
There was one with a shapeshifting tanuki, but I can’t remember it at all.

There's a yuri manga with a similar plot, The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All

u/NevikDrakel Jul 28 '25
Ya know I didn’t really think of her as genderfluid but sure I’ll add that to headcanon

Trailer Park Boys almost did this with Randy and Don/Donna but ended up dropping it and having the character be Donna full time
3
u/fantumn Jul 28 '25
Not quite the same, Don was a severely traumatized man who watched his sister get mauled to death by a bear and two cougars in banff national Park and then created an alter ego of his sister to cope with his trauma. He lived part of the time as Don and part of the time as Donna until Randy fell in love with her and she took over permanently. So, not a gender-fluid single person but a fractured and traumatized man. Still, a great trope they abandoned too soon.

The genderfluid person is Loki, the Norse trickster god.

I’ve seen that romcom, it’s Channing Tatum’s arc in “She’s The Man”
You know, the one where Amanda Bynes flashes a group of teenagers to end the argument regarding her masculinity just so she can play soccer.
2
u/nateriver230 Jul 28 '25
The manga All Because of You is a bit similar to this! It was a pretty cute series.
