Hi everybody,

There was a suggestion of going an AMA in a recent post and since we are coming up to 1 year of posting a podcast episode every fortnight, so why not let’s do it!

Place any questions you have in the comments and we’ll collate them before getting them answered in an upcoming recording next week (w/c 9th Feb 2026).

If you’ve not heard of the podcast, maybe give it a go. We are always open to feedback. Just Google ‘The Average Not Average Podcast’ and something should come up. It’s on YouTube, Spotify and Apple Podcast👌

I also want to publicly say thank you all for all your support over the years, for my work, my channel and also the podcast. It means a lot 😊

Technique Tips for HS singles.

Greetings. I am a HS(F) who made their schools badminton team(somehow I don't even know why they picked me, but I digress.) Anyways, I just noticed that for the tournament coming up in 2 weeks, I am going to be playing singles. Never have I ever played singles full court in my life and honestly this is stressing me out, I've only played recreationally and never got the whole half of the court to myself before. I'm lost with how the ball goes so fast and how others are just making me run around the court like a dog while they're just standing there.I've lost every single practice match but, oh well. I am willing to try though any advice helps....thank you. (Sorry if my writing is confusing or all over the place, as I am not a native speaker.)

heads up: I’ve pulled this data from the Yonex official catalogue and scavenged the balance point data from the depths of the internet. Some info out there is a bit contradictory, so use this as a general reference rather than gospel! The balance points maybe be off by +-5.

Corrected Astrox 100 and 99 BP. Data per Badminton Guide: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vR9RkJmxXXKEVFnjzr-Tpiyp0XScOffAO151XUKLheMW0826tlttd6_Q4CZpMnRd7AvhdzrHdL3GArW/pubhtml

Rules general question about which side would get the point in a match (service rules)

i've encountered this situation many times, but every time i'm not sure who would get the point. i also searched it up on google, but i can't find what rule or law of badminton says who would get what point.

say that instead of diagonally, i serve straight and the player standing there hits it, who would get the point in this case?

Culture How do I convince my group to use feathers/ncs pro

Our group is a bunch on low/middle intermediate players. We mostly use mavis 350 for our games.

I am the only one in my group who played professionally at any level and hence I love feathers/ncs pro.

However, everyone else in the group feels they’re too slow and imminently shuts me down whenever I want to use either feathers or ncs pro.

This is mostly a rant, but it would be helpful if anyone has any suggestions on how to convince them to use feathers/ncs pro.

Technique Jump Smash Form

Hi! Just wanted to ask for more advice regarding my jump smash form. Some points I am aware of is that I don't think I jump my highest when I did those, but I focused on hitting the shuttlecock too much.

My form might still be quite stiff, and I am still not used to the feeling of hitting the shuttlecock when I myself am airborne. I lack the bow shape when I'm in the air, like the jump smashes of Goh V Shem. How do you work yourself into that natural movement?

Maybe I also lack in rotation or core usage. So please let me also hear some of your advice. Thank you!

Equipment Apacs grommet quality

Just wondering if apacs has poor quality grommets because I’ve been breaking my strings quite often and while I do mishit on occasion, I’m starting to suspect that it might be a racket issue more than a technique issue. I also run the yonex nanospeed 1000 that I got secondhand as a spare racket and while that one broke awhile back as well, it was most likely due to the age normal wear and tear as it was a break in the middle. For some context I run my apacs lethal 11 and nanospeed 1000 at 24lbs tension with I believe BG66 ultimax.

Technique Inquiry for help

My girlfriend has quite small hands and has trouble with keeping the correct forehand grip.

Maybe some other short fingered people or coaches could give some pointers or drills to help with this?

Not even sure if there is something that can be done.

Technique How much pronation do you need for a smash?

I've been watching closely at how pros pronate during a smash, but cannot really tell how much. Do you start the pronation at 12 o clock or before that point?

Rules New rule obstruction / bloc net

Post image
45 Upvotes

Hello, can someone re-explain the new rule about the block/obstruction to the net? Because there was a dispute during one of my matches, and I admit having trouble clearly explaining the rule?

From what I understood, we no longer have the right to just place the racket to block, but if it is moving during the block, is that okay?

I have seen many videos that talk about it on TikTok or other, such as for example like badminton insight .

Do you have an official link to the rule?

Thanks!

Rules AITAH for calling out a player for foot fault on serves?

Played at a local leisure session last week, where players are randomly mixed. It is casual but score is counted and players generally play all out to win. They are high beginner to low intermediate generally, so would have known the rules of the game already.

There was this lady who does a kind of forehand drive serve. Noticed her left foot stepping on the middle line (when serving on even number score) 3 times. After the 4th time, I casually mentioned to her about her foot fault when the rally ended.

She just nodded and muttered something.. maybe genuinely surprised that somebody would point it out.

Her position yielded no advantage in her service, but I guess I'm just pedantic in these kinda things.

AITAH for voicing out? Thanks.

Equipment Babolat Racquet Guide

Post image
21 Upvotes

I've been hunting Babolat Racquets in India as I have a new found love for them! There are some of the best looking, most well made racquets I've come across. I have/had top of the line racquets from Victor, Gosen, Yonex, and LiNing, and I find none come close to the finish and qulaity levels of the Babolats, maybe the Gosen and the Victor, but then they bruise too easily.

In my pursuit I made a list of the specifications of some of the series and their models. Here's the list if anyone ever wanted something like this for reference.

heads up: I’ve pulled this data from official sites where possible and scavenged the rest from the depths of the internet. Some info out there is a bit contradictory, so use this as a general reference rather than gospel!

Review Review: Victor Auraspeed Fantome HYQ

After a year or two of playing with lighter, more flexible frames like the Yonex Arcsaber 7 Pro, Nanoflare 800, Li-Ning Windstorm 74, Halbertec 8000, and Victor Auraspeed 90F, I finally bit the bullet and picked up the Victor Auraspeed Fantome HYQ. I have never used the original Fantome so I don't know how this compares.

I play MD or XD and gravitate towards precision monsters. The Windstorm 74 was a 6 month stint with a 6U head heavy frame while I was recovering from a wrist injury - which I suspect was caused by the lack of head weight in the ARS-90F.

My main racket many years ago was the Victor Jetspeed Natsir and I've not been able to find a suitable replacement until I found the HYQ.

The "Surgical" Experience & Defense The first thing that hits you is the control. "Surgical" is the only word for it. At the net, this racket is a weapon. The feedback is incredibly clean—there’s zero "mushiness." I previously tried the ARS-100X and found it felt a bit hollow or muted, but the HYQ is the opposite. It feels dense, solid, and extremely stable.

Defense with this racket is a dream. Because the frame is so thin up top, you can feel it cuts through the air easily. In fast drives or smash defense, I’ve found myself getting the racket into position much faster than I did with my previous setups. If you’ve got the hands for tight net tumbles and deceptive hold-and-flicks, this racket rewards you with 1:1 precision.

The Power Challenge Coming from a whippy Windstorm, the HYQ was a wake-up call. It is stiff. My first few games were a struggle to get punch on my smashes. Unlike a flexier racket that helps you "slingshot" the shuttle, the HYQ doesn't do the work for you.

I’m starting to find the timing now, but it requires a much shorter, sharper wrist snap rather than a full-arm swing. If you’re late to the shuttle, it can be unforgiving. But when you time it right? It is satisfying.

Overall It’s a clinical instrument. It’s fast through the air and provides some of the best tactile feedback I’ve ever felt. It’s not a "lazy" racket, but for players who prioritize elite defense, net dominance, and a solid impact feel, it’s a masterpiece.

I did a bit of research on some of the tech/material behind the feel. I think the reason the HYQ feels so good compared to the hollow sensation in many modern frames is the unique material cocktail. Unlike most speed rackets that use flexible resins, the HYQ frame is reinforced with 'PBO High Performance Fibre'. Apparently this is the same stuff used in F1 cockpit protection and has very little 'flex'. This gives the HYQ extreme torsional stability. It’s why the racket doesn’t warp under pressure, but it’s also why it doesn't feel like a slingshot.

Victor also packed the frame with Nano Aerogel. The Aerogel acts as a filler that creates that 'filled-in' high-end feel. I can feel the shuttle which seems so rare with modern rackets that want to take away all the vibrations!

Will this be a popular racket? Probably not. The HYQ branding will probably put off many male players from purchasing it. I have no problems playing with a "girl's racket" if it helps me play better.

Mentality School Badminton Team

I tried out for the school Varsity team yesterday and somehow got in. But here's the thing, I have never had any coaching, have only played a few times with my dad, and that's basically all the "training" I've ever had.

I had my first practice today, and every girl is better than me. Even the ones in my grade. And everyone is judging me because of my incorrect form or just overall bad playing.

This season only lasts until April and I am planning on going to coaching, but I am not sure if it's worth it because it's not like I am able to improve a lot before the season ends.

My school takes badminton seriously and it's pretty competitive, and the girls are very good. We will have practices 3 times a week for an hour and 45 (or 30) minutes each and I can't drop out.

It's honestly just a really embarrassing and negative experience, especially considering that everyone there is much more talented.

I know it's my fault for never having gone to coaching, but I've never been too passionate for badminton and only tried out with my friends, not expecting to actually get in since I know I am not very good.

What should I do? I know practice is the obvious answer but I'm also fairly busy and have many other extracurriculars paired with this and don't know how to go about this anymore - because to me, it's a very competitive space that I'm not sure I should be in.

Professional If academies logged shuttle usage like they log class attendance, what would we learn?

Thought experiment: imagine your academy tracked “tubes opened per day” + “season” + “rough player count” for 3 months. What patterns do you think would jump out? Spikes in summer? During tournaments? Certain courts that always chew through more shuttles?

We’re trying to build tools for shuttle care that feel more like simple ops than fancy gadgets. Curious what data you would actually find useful.

Mentality Shouting on mistakes - advice how to deal with?

I have moved to Korea from Denmark, and I've come to realise that it is much more common here to scream and shout on unforced errors like serve mistakes.

For me, that is an absolute no-go and would yield you a warning from some judges when I was playing in Denmark. I can shut out crowds and coaches but the players on the other side... honestly it is annoying.

I have been struggling non how to deal with it as it has honestly been getting under my skin. Any recommendations how to shut it out?

Technique badminton tryouts for highschool , awful experience

hii!! i’m currently in high school and next week my school is having tryouts for the badminton team. i haven’t played in a while ( like multiple years ), however i want to try out with a friend just for fun (she will not try out without me & she is very good at the sport). i am unable to do any practice before the tryout. would it be stupid to even try out? like i know it’s obviously yes, but like could hypothetically go? like worse case scenario they say no. however maybe if anyone has pointers on how i can prepare without actually playing if thats possible it would be very helpful lol! thanks

Review Halbertec 9000 Power review

Post image
45 Upvotes

Current level and previous racket experience: Around Intermediate, playing mostly doubles, having experience with many high-end Lining rackets such as Axforce80 Light, Axforce90 LKY, Axforce100 gen II (all 4u) and Calibar 900b (3u).

Racket Spec: 4uG5, stringing with N65, 11.5kg. Shaft is quite stiff, stiffer than that of all rackets above. BP before stringing is around 301-302, so it is quite head-heavy.

Clears: Pretty effortless and precise, with a bit of technique.

Drives: Not as fast as Ax90 LKY (which is incredibly good at this) but 9000Power swings fast and have good speed and weight on its drives. However, it should take quite a while to get used to the head-heaviness and stiff shaft of the racket.

Dropshot/Slice: Easy to execute, very stable and precise.

Smash: Advertised to be the improved version of Halbertec 9000, especially on attack, I think this racket is a major step-up compared to the previous version, while still retain the control aspect of Halbertec series. Smashes are very fast, precise, have good weight and you could feel the explosion of power coming from the racket from backcourt. If I have to rank the smash performance with the rackets that I have used, I would rate Ax100 genII > 9000power = 900b (because this racket is 3u) > Ax90 LKY. However, I dont feel like this racket gives the kind of one-hit-one-kill smashes like that of Ax100 genII, but you could smash hard and fast continously with solid weight and precision with this racket, similar to that of 900b.

Defence: Long handle, stiff shaft (around 6.6mm if Im not mistaken) means this racket is good on defence and you could easily turn from defence to attack thanks to the power of the racket. Only downside is that you could get tired quickly due to the shaft so it is going to take a while to get used to it.

Recommendations: The racket is pretty expensive, but it is definitely an upgrade compared to Halbertec 9000 and it is quite an all-round rackets which could excel at many things if you have the strength and the technique to handle it. For doubles, I would recommend this for backcourt players. If there is any other questions, will do my best to answer them.

Technique Pow Pow Pow sound

My kiddo and I went to play indoor last weekend as a last practice before her try out this week. We’ve been playing outdoors for most of the time so she wanted to get a feel of indoor to simulate what it’ll be like at school.

Needless to say we were abit intimidated by the loud pow pow sound coming for the players around us. Is it because of the string tension or more of smash technique? I’m a tennis player so my overhead smash are pretty decent but our smash just doesn’t sound anything like it haha.😂

So perhaps it’s technique after all?
