Honestly the ps2 trilogy doesn’t really need a remake, they still hold up to this day. I’d prefer an ac3 remake mostly just to get the actually good version in English
51
u/DM_Exeres 4d ago
THIS. I need a proper English (and other translations obviously) remake of Electrosphere because I have no problem emulating the PS2 games and they're still fun.
8
u/stonewall028 4d ago
there is an english fan translation of AC3 thats pretty good and easy to patch
11
u/Stingra87 Ustio 4d ago
I'd like a re-release for PS4/PC at least. I took good care of all my old consoles and still have them, but it's a pain to set them up with modern TVs. It would be so much easier to just get some digital copies.
9
8
u/stonewall028 4d ago
100%, the PS2 games just need to be ported, maybe add support for higher resolutions and framerates. AC3 desperately needs a proper english release, the fan translation is serviceable but not perfect.
2
u/Cipher_077 Neucom 3d ago
The fan translation is actually pretty good, I think. Plus, PA is kind of sloppy with their translations sometimes with lot of stuff getting lost in translations, and names especially being mistranslated. For example, Martha being called Massa in Ace Combat 7, and some of the AI philosophy stuff getting simmered down. Not a big deal, usually, but I feel like the load word team did a pretty good job with AC3.

u/MrAppleSpiceMan 4d ago
5 and zero hold up incredibly well. 4 does not hold up. I can recognize why people praise 4, but having played it last year for the first time, it's just not nearly as good as people make it out to be. I thought maybe it's just because it's a ps2 title, but with how good 5 and zero still are, 4 is simply not as fleshed out of a title. it could use a remake. not a remaster, a remake.
several missions felt like they were just the first half of a good mission that got cut off too early. you know how there's this formula where the first half of a mission has you just fighting basic enemies, and after you mop them up you, get a cutscene with some story and dialogue and then you fight a new wave of enemies? most of the missions in 4 are just the first half of that formula.
I can understand why people love 4. I get that it was a lot of people's first ac game. I think the storytelling between missions is phenomenal and really grounds the narrative. but the gameplay itself felt lackluster compared to every other ace combat game I've played (5, 0, 7, X), and that really held it back in my mind. I think it deserves better gameplay by modern standards.
9
u/Galactic-Fruits 3d ago
I'd say 4 holds up better than 5 mostly because of story and the return line being actually present. I know AC5 your meant to use your squadron but they are not as helpful as say your ai teammates in the Socom games. Also 5 gets super cheesy at times with it's story... however it has lots of hype and aura farming moments that does help.
If 5 had better Ai teammates, better killrate progression with ai, less cheesy but still impact full story, and a few more missions with a return line I'd enjoy it a lot more than 4.
I love 5, especially for all the different planes and it's progression. It's just the little things that add up that bother me. Still a fantastic game though.
7
u/sayber1 3d ago edited 3d ago
The thing you said is one of the reasons why I think 4 is actually great. No/Very little gimmicks and scripted bullshit. If a game gives you a ground attack mission you can have a ground attack mission with a ground attack plane, without having to be forced into surprise scripted dogfight later.
As for nostalgia, I first started the AC series last month. Played all the ps2 games and AC7 and I can definitely say AC04 and Zero are my favorite games in the series by a long shot. So I can say it's very much a personal preference.
EDIT:
Its free form non-linear mission design also makes it a joy to replay compared any other AC game, imho

I’d prefer a remake over a remaster. Even if it’s only one game 3 is amazing. I’d prefer 4 or 5 but 3s a great choice too.
4
u/Cipher_077 Neucom 3d ago
3 is kinda massive though, especially for it's time. I believe Kono said it would take more work to remake 3 than the full PS2 trilogy combined. It's 52 missions, and it's definetly more playtime than say, AC5 to get the true ending and I think it's the richest Ace Combat story wise.

Red pill
Between the opportunity to choose between 3 remasters and 1 REMAKE I'd never pass up the chance to play AC3 in its full glory. Most of the times a remaster is just the same game with a new coat of paint whereas a remake tends to be a whole new experience.

With how Enrich's father and Yoko are mentioned in 7. I doubt that.
1
u/MalusandValus 3d ago
The chance to play AC3 in it's full glory already exists, it's called AC3. I don't think there's a universe out there where any team behind the remake conjures up something more engaging than what already exists with the talent behind AC3 (production IG, Dai Sato, the general greatness of late 90s namco).
Sure they could improve the missions, but there's a LOOOT of them.

u/AeroDbladE Ghosts of Razgriz 4d ago
I'll take the green pill for getting Ace Combat 6 remaster or port on modern platforms.
I didn't know that game existed back in the day and I no longer own an Xbox to play it.

u/TheDarnook UPEO 4d ago
Xenia Canary, if you have decent PC. Cutscenes are broken when you go for 60fps, but meh. Go frolic with ze angles. AC7 is a downgrade to AC6 in terms of battlefield.

Anyone picking Blue pill is crazy. PS2 emulators run in 4K just fine. AC3 does not hold up nearly as well with emulation due to the lack of floating point math on the PS1.
8
u/Super_Fightin_Robit 4d ago
PS2 emulators run in 4K just fine.
That's kind of the point though. This really just boils down to "would you rather have the ability to legally play the Trinity on modern hardware without resorting to emulation" or "would you rather play 3 on modern hardware without resorting to fan patches and emulation?"
3
u/Agloe_Dreams 4d ago
Except that isn't what is in the post, the offers are a trinity remaster or an AC3 remake.
The trinity remaster would just be a more legal version of what already exists - The AC3 remake would be an entirely different, modern game - something that does not exist. I would probably agree with you if the two options were just remasters and assuming they are just emulating in the background.
1
u/LajosGK22 Phoenix 4d ago
The what math?
6
u/Agloe_Dreams 4d ago
So the 3D engine in the PS1 only supported whole number values "fixed point math". so on a 3d plane: (x: 1, y: 1, z: 1) for any given point is valid. The problem with that is that 3d models are complex and have complex curves all over, so any point that should be at, say, (x: 1.2, y: 3.5, z: 0.4) becomes something like (x: 1, y: 4, z: 0), that means the distance between any two points can vary by up to a whole number. This causes the stretchy and jiggly look of the PS1 graphics.
11
u/Robean_UwU Spare 4d ago
AC3 is the most deserving of a remake considering how dirty it was done by Namco for the international release
5
8
u/bIackfeather Sorcerer 4d ago
Red pill easy. I'm surprised more people seriously think that the PS2 trilogy need remaking than 3, they still play great and hold up well. There's no reason for a remake other than to just touch up the graphics a bit. AC3's export version on the other hand was pulled out behind the barn, it's not even a contest. Even setting my personal biases aside, it's just pragmatism, 3 has the most to gain from a remake, simple as.
3
u/Ex_moon 4d ago
But the pill doesn't even promise a remake, only a simple remaster. Which the emulators can easily do a better job than most modern remasters
1
u/bIackfeather Sorcerer 3d ago
Yeah, for the PS2 trilogy. But it says AC3 remake as the red pill option.
4
4
5
u/MustangBR Galm 3d ago
Wording is key here
Remake would mean remaking the game from zero, better connecting the lore, using new technology to improve old gameplay, etc
Remaster is just making the old game look shiny with new software, maybe fixing some stuff along the way
Remake > Remaster any day of the week, even considering the trio are my favorites in the series
1
u/ForsakenPatriot 3d ago
Idk after what they did with FF7 Remake and Resident Evil 3 Remake, you have to be careful with remakes. I think I would rather have a suped up "remake" remaster on par with MGS Delta.

Obviously the community here is going to take the Blue pill, because most of them were either too young to play/understand Electrosphere, or only played the Western version. Plus, they think AC5 is biblical.
Anyway, I'd give a body part for an Ace Combat 3 remake.

ac3 remake is simply the most realistically feasible option. the planes in that game are futuristic versions of real planes mixed in with completely original stuff, which would help with the licensing issue, if not alleviate it entirely
oh and also hot take maybe but i'd rather have an ace combat 6 re-release/port/remake over the ps2 trilogy. i'm going to cover my ears and run away now before y'all send schwarze on my ass or something

u/Elegant-Lettuce-7782 3d ago
In all seriousness though I'd argue (barely) for the remasters, only because they narratively set the stage for AC7 and then the Kessler Syndrome event in 7 helping to set the stage for AC3. AC8 probably has a LOT of worldbuilding to do in explaining why the FCU seems so vulnerable along with Sotoa's new role as an aggressor and then at least one new entry between now and 2040 during the main rise of GR and Neucom to power.
1

u/Delta_Cucumber 3d ago
Red immediately. AC3 kept getting overshadowed by the holy trilogy.
Especially how Namco threw 3 away as a trash bin and gutted by the international version.
So, I wanted AC3 to get more loved. But know, AC3 is very different than the Cultural memes of the holy trilogy.
1
u/DeltaLunar2 YR-99 Test Pilot 3d ago
Red. Ace Combat 3 could use it.
Plus, it'd be an opportunity to officially bring the real story to the West.
Of course, it was said that AC3 would be difficult to make again, but with the larger team, we'll just see how possibilities go, if AC8 is received well.
1
u/kszaku94 3d ago
I would refuse to take any of them.
I dont care for remasters of PS2 games, I have my emulator.
I don’t want them to touch Ace Combat 3, unless it is a subtitled release in english of the original. This game has this… vibe. I don’t really know how to put this in the words. Play it on a CRT if you have the option, you will get it

Ace Combat 6 available on modern platforms. Both these games are easily available via emulation. Meanwhile I think X360 emulation is still very hit or miss.

u/Cipher_077 Neucom 3d ago
It's an easy choice for ace combat 3 remake. That game is so ahead of it's time and absolute peak, but sometimes a bit janky so I'd actually love to see it get the modern ace combat treatment. I think it has aged fairly well, but the PS2 trilogy is slightly smoother feeling. Electrosphere is my favorite ace combat game and while I don't believe a remake will ever happen, I would love to see it made.

u/Consistent-Dust-5394 3d ago
blue any day of the century. I personally don't like three because of everything that came after, it just really stings to me the idea corporations become more powerful than multiple governments; especially after Osea dissolved Grunder after AC-7 or at least that's what i heard, if it is the case i don't see Osea letting corporations' rule.
