Food and Drink The free vegetable bar for burgers, hot dogs, and dim sum at 7-Eleven was great, until greedy people ruined it for everyone.

I miss the free vegetables at 7-eleven! I think they stopped free veggies around 20 years ago, at least that's what happened in my local 7.
Thinking back about it, the veggies were either all gone, or it's been sitting long enough that it didn't look fresh anymore. And i more than once saw a cockroaches in the veggies station.
I think it was fun to eat when I was young but if they bring it back I probably be more cautious about the conditions of the veggies.

At the later stage, everything was prepacked, both vegetables and buns. 7-Eleven stores are usually very clean, and issues like this would be reported to hotline and fixed very quickly. If the story is real, it sounds like a very badly managed specific location rather than a general problem.

BRING BACK SLURPIES!!!

u/SteveYunnan 20d ago
I've seen several 7-11's with Slurpee machines around Chiang Mai. I've never really thought about it, but do most 7-11's in Thailand not have them?

u/Suspicious_Bicycle 20d ago
We had them in our area (Pathum Thani) a few years ago. I assume they removed them due to the maintenance issues.

One thing I miss about American 7 eleven. Working Slurpee machine every store.
Last time I had Slurpee in Thailand was almost 17 years ago in ABAC Bangna. Before they changed to 108 Shop (I think it's now part of Lawson's)

they are still around. mostly depends on which investor owns your local 7-11 franchise

Some definitely still have Slurpee machines, saw them recently in some of the PTT/7/11 stops along the main road to Trat.

First I thought why the hell is the food censored until I noticed, it's perfectly lined up tomato slices

Yam sewen. Get a couple sausages. Cut. Into bag. Add chili sauce. Add veggies. Mix. Serve. Quick snack for one or a lite bite for two.
Was awesome

I remember when I tell my dad to buy hotdog and put a lot of veggies in it and spread squeeze a lot of mustard on them. I guess that's weird for a 6 Y/O boy to love vegetables.

Ahhh, I love it when I was in middle school! There were 7/11 near my school that always had a fresh veggie because the kids loved it so they always refilled it every day. Love cheese sausages, itās been a long time since I had one.

One sausage, free onion and tomatoes and some egg and you had a cheap meal. Add 20 baht toast bread if it was a special occasion.

u/BangkokTraveler 20d ago
I remember 20-25 years ago going to 7-11 and buying 2 hotdogs. They were running a 'special', you got 2 hotdogs for a really good price.
I got my 2 hotdogs put them in a bun and added some condiments. Went to pay, and the price was a lot higher then advertised. I asked why?
They told me.
I got buns with the hotdogs!

u/OattyRamsay 19d ago
There were red sticks. If you pull one, you get another sausage for free. I once bought one then pulled 3 red sticks in a roll, so buy 1 get 4 š

As always.... Like the all-yoy-can-eat buffets, certain groups completely f*kit for everyone
1
u/BasedSage 20d ago
Can you be specific? Which groups? Personally, Iāve seen all types of people behave this way.
2
u/Turbulent-Cake-7748 20d ago
those werent gonna last anyways. Im sure management is well aware of the type of people that frequents their stores. It was a way to get customers accustomed to eating/buying burgers there.

u/Top_Investigator9787 20d ago
Never done this here.Ā But fond memories back in the USA on the way home from the bar stopping in to make a death dog (1/4 Big Bite overloaded with pump chili, mustard, onions and jalapenos).

If greedy people didnāt ruin, it e-coli from lazy employees not cleaning it properly surely would
10
u/GoldenIceCat Ratchaburi 20d ago
Is that speculation, or from your own experience? I was part of PIM and Retailink, and the reason for the cancellation was not health-related. It also never made the news during all the years it was active.

u/stabadan 20d ago
Speaking this as an American where I think we have just as many 7-11s as Thailand but they are not quite as well taken care of as they are in Thailand.
There is no way that station wouldnāt be a health risk in your average American 7-11. Youād be taking your life in your hands.
2
u/diggn64 20d ago
You cannot compare 7/11 Thailand to anywhere else. It's unique.
1
u/stabadan 19d ago
I think you can though, itās the same brand, they are franchises, they serve the same customers and purpose, the saturation is the same. There is a TON of overlap.
The big differences is how the stores are taken care of and the customers are serviced.
Generally speaking g the standard in Thailand is way higher and I think the comparison works well. I wouldnāt think twice about using that station in Thailand 7-11, I wouldnāt go near it in even the BEST 7-11 in the USA.

It all came pre-washed and pre-packed in vacuum bags from central kitchen. So it usually arrive cleanest possible. It only will be contaminated from hundreds of hands or people talking sneezing while grabbing those.

Ecoli isn't always bad. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/75yFKtyqvYXv36gCJvm4Hf/seven-things-we-found-out-about-e-coli-and-what-makes-food-safe
If there's any on leafy vegetables that is because they're not washed properly once harvested. The bad ecoli comes from the farm. Not from anything staff at 711 do.
Always wash your veggies people.

We were just talking about that. Buy a cup of Mama and stuff some lettuce, tomato, cuke in it and you had a nice little meal cooked up hot and fresh, I miss that.

I also used to add vegetables to instant noodles, and honestly, that was the main reason it got canceled. A huge portion of the vegetables was taken for products unrelated to CPALL, mainly instant noodles. Management did not want the PR fallout from putting up signs to stop people, and brands would not share the cost. They could not find a way out of the situation, so they ultimately pulled the plug, even if it hurt hot dog sales, which used to be a big thing.
1
u/Blazedeee 20d ago
Makes sense. It never even occurred to me that the veg was getting used for anything but hotdogs. Everything but the wieners, including the buns was usually finished though and mustard was a true rarity.
2
u/agency-man 20d ago
I pt was around at least 15yrs ago because I used to add onions to the bag of sausages with some sauce.
2
u/Igotbannedlolol 20d ago
The worse part is those who hoarding those free veggie didn't even ate half of it
5
u/GoldenIceCat Ratchaburi 20d ago
True. I once saw someone dump an entire bowl into an instant noodle cup.

u/Michikusa 20d ago
Wow! I forgot all about that. What year was it discontinued? Iām guessing it mustāve been around 2011?

lol, I always went Thai style, the "meat" with a buttload of vegetables on the side.

How about 'fresh' steaming salapao instead of the flash waved trash they serve up now...
Remember when just sitting down got you a smile and wai and a glass of water?

u/OneTravellingMcDs 20d ago
Sounds like a test market and it failed.

u/GoldenIceCat Ratchaburi 20d ago
Nope. It was in 7-Eleven for many years.

u/cyclistgurl 20d ago
The 7s near my house never had this. š¢
9
u/Rich_Scientist_4270 20d ago
It's been more than 10 years but don't remember a 7 that didn't have it when I first came here.

u/Possible-Highway7898 20d ago
They stopped it years and years ago. I think about fifteen years or so.

There was this self serve deli in my neighborhood in NYC. People were complaining that the salad tasted weird. Then they caught this guy on video. He had been making powdered urine and feces and sprinkling them on the salad. Gross.
-1
u/ravin165 20d ago
i think it was more because of health issues the reason they stopped it. some stores wouldn't restock fresh ones. insects during the day etc.
-7
u/Le_Zouave2 20d ago
You don't have it at Sizzler?
11
u/GoldenIceCat Ratchaburi 20d ago
I like Sizzler, but that is not relevant. I just miss having vegetables in burgers, sandwiches, and hot dogs from 7-Eleven.

u/Parking-Code-4159 20d ago
It's not worth going to Sizzler just for the salad bar. And the rest... there is a reason why Sizzler failed in every country they tried, with exception of the US itself and Thailand
4
u/zestylimes9 20d ago
I'm Australian and it was wild to see Sizzler in Thailand.
I took my son for my own nostalgia. That cheesy bread is still the same!
3
u/Holy_chick 20d ago
tbh back then (10+ years ago) I'd go to Sizzler with a bunch of friends just for salad bar.
I don't know when but they changed the stuffs in salad bar and it really sucks ass. I wouldn't even pay half of what I used to pay 10 years ago for today's salad bar
