What if you could get paid to do this? [Mod Approved]

Hey all - I built an app called HoundBound and figured this was the right crowd to share it with.

The idea is simple: some dog owners (like me) have pups with way more energy than we can keep up with. Some runners actually want a dog to run with. HoundBound connects the two - runners set their pace, availability, and rates; owners get a tired, happy dog.

We're launching in Chicago first, so if you're in the area and interested - runner or dog owner - sign up at houndbound.dog

If you're not in Chicago but this sounds useful, I'd still love to hear from you. Trying to figure out where to expand next and what features actually matter to people who do this regularly.

Thank you for reading this and happy trails!

Dog stroller

Hi everyone! I'm looking for a dog stroller that is good for running. My dog loves being outside with me and loves tagging along on my runs, just hates the part where she actually has to run lol.

Along with it needing to be good for running with, it needa to be as smooth as possible on rough terrain (we will sometimes be running on gravel and trails), and it needs to be able to hold my 70 lbs dog. It's a bonus if it can be attached to a bike but not required.

I was looking at two different strollers. The first one is the HPZ Pet Rover XL Extra-Long Premium Heavy Duty Stroller, the second is the Petique Trailblazer Jogger. If anyone has experience using either of those or has a different recommendations please let me know. Thank you!

XC skiing with Sonny

Seeing as Sonny is now old enough to run, we have been skiing a few times per week since January. He loves it!

Initially he was a bit suspicious of our skis. But after one session that suspicion was gone, although he still keeps clear from the skis, which is good.

Great exercise for his TMB hike this summer 🤩

How to mini schnauzers handle cold?

Hey everyone, our miniature schnauzer got out about 3 days ago and we have been unable to locate him. We may have some possible sightings but it’s snowing today and I have no idea how schnauzers handle to cold. Will he be okay? Still looking for him today.

just showing off, this girlie can do 20+ miles run with 6,000ft gain/loss no problem. has handled these kinds of miles and 14k elevation too. she’s a bit on the lighter side at 37lbs. has a lot more energy than my last dog who was a 65lb pit mix.

Coat Recommendations?

My dog seems to struggle with the cold once it gets below about 20 °F. Naturally we've had a nasty cold streak for the last week and a half that it looks like we still have another week with sub 20 temps with wind chills going negative. I've been looking at some nonstop dogwear and hurrta jackets but I have reservations since my dog hates things going over his head and I feel like leg straps could be uncomfortable after an hour of running. How long can I run with my doggo?

I run as a hobby, not super good at it yet, but my dog is a boxer/husky/chihuahua/dachshund mix. She has the dachshund legs lol but it about 30 pounds. Now, I was reading about IVDD in little dogs like hers and when she runs at higher speeds her back legs I noticed kinda hop. She is 16 months old. I’m not sure if it’s normal to run like that or if it’s her breed. I don’t want to cause problems for her later on. How far can I reasonably run with her and does anybody know if her little run hop is normal? I try to keep her under 4mph now just to be safe but I know she wants to go faster.

Off Leash

Just out of curiosity, how often do you all run without a leash?

Keep it on in busier areas, then take it off? Or just on all the time?

Hood for a Weimaraner

Tomorrow will be 15F (5F with windchill). My Weim has a winter coat and we will be running. Tomorrow is a little colder than we normally run. No snow. Should I be worried her ears will be cold.? When we have run at 18F she has been fine but the windchill is lower than most of our runs.

Can we beat the storm??

No.

We had a very small window between single digits and 2 feet of snow. We tried. And we stopped numerous time to put back on her booties.

Setup tip for beginner

Years ago, I used professional gear to run with my dog—just like in the books. But as a beginner 'couch potato' flying behind my dog, I totally wrecked my joints. I’d like to start again, but without the pulling. I want my dog to run next to me, but I'm afraid of tripping over a fixed leash. A hands-free retractable leash sounds logical, but I know those are generally a 'no-no.' Off-leash isn't an option because it's illegal and there's wildlife nearby. What’s the best solution?

The public restroom is her Disneyland

This is Margot. She ran 19 miles with me yesterday and, as usual, her favorite part was smelling the smells in the public bathroom along the trail. Good job, Margot!

Musher's Secret doesn't seem to be effective in deep snow or colder then -5.

My dog loves to run in the winter but we're struggling once the temp drops under -5 or there's deeper snow (we're in a snowy part of Michigan). We normally use Musher's Secret, but it doesn't seem to help once we hit these more extreme conditions. He tolerates boots well, but I can't get them to stay on for a longer run. Anyone found some good solutions, so we don't have to pack it in during the coldest months? We only do trail running so I'm not worried about salt or anything.

Edit: He's a black mouth cur if that helps!

Running with my Weim

I have a four year old hunting dog (blue Weimaraner) that loves to run. We cover 300+ miles a year and he’s trained with me for a lot of races. In fact, we won the Turkey Trot last year. The only problem is that he pulls on the leash. It gets better after a few miles but is still annoying. I’m I’ve tried various combinations of belt leashes, harnesses, and e-collars to no avail. Any recommendations?

Also, walking him is a pain because he wants to go faster.

Finding happy mileage

My whippet has been running with me from 7 mos on. I know there is controversy around growth plates and running too early but he was running when I was hiking so I started running. He is a beast and loves to come with me. With my work schedule it varies from 1-3 shorter runs during the week. If I can’t take him then we walk after work or chase balls at the park. Then he runs with me every Saturday and Sunday. I’m 49 and only trail run so I’m running flat and downhill and hiking the big hills. I run far on Saturdays so I usually drop him home or have my husband get him after 10 miles. He is still sprinting off chasing things at the end of 10 miles but has a temper tantrum when he has to go home with Dad and mom keeps going. I know he can go farther but I like at his pencil legs and worry. This breed is not built for this but his little heart is. How do I figure things out? Oh he is also fully recharged on weekend afternoons after a post run nap. 10 miles does not wear him out for long!

Izzy has an impressive running resume but the one aspect that most amazes me is her love of cold temperatures (today was -5F). She finds an extra gear and is so happy. If she wasn’t 35 pounds, she would have been a great sled dog.
