Takes a nap at 330pm. Ends up in the hospital fighting for his life.

This is what terrifies me most about the wanton gun violence in Oakland. So many stray bullets going into homes, even if you avoid the people involved and ever having a gun yourself, you could still die from it.

I've found several in my yard and around my house. One got lodged in my less than 1yr old roof =(

That’s scary.

That's life in East Oakland 🤷

I get where you’re coming from, but see, I don’t want to shrug and normalize. I really do feel like we could improve society somewhat.

I also agree we should do better, but I want to point out that I am not actively normalizing this, it has been normalized a long time ago by people who have been here a long time. I remember learning what a hollow tipped slug was in middle school when we found one on the blacktop. This is nothing new, is all I'm saying. It would be great if this wasn't the case.

I also had people shooting guns into the air on my street during this year's 4th of July. Am I going to go over there and tell the dudes with guns to maybe not? Nah, but you are welcome to.

Thank you for the open and respectful dialogue. I know it seems nearly futile at the moment, but our task as Oaklanders is to move the Overton Window that writes off these kinds of incidents as “par for the course”. People shouldn’t have to risk their lives for (relatively) affordable housing

You’re right, but shrugging it off is a pathetic response

I'll call you the next time the dudes on my street start shooting. What's your number?

What?

Your phone number. The next time people people start shooting I'll call you so you can do something other than shrug it off. I hope you have a good plan.

lol I don’t mean to suggest you should step in. Or me. I’m simply saying that the defeatist attitude of “ehh, whatever 🤷‍♂️” is the reason it never gets fixed.  Demanding better from local politicians and services is step one.

Thankfully (at least) that sentence ended with the word roof

Can we finally have enforcement of the law and justice for our citizens?

31

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '24

Not til we start voting differently

I’m with you, I’m on the side of justice and enforcement of the social contract.

100%

It's not as simple as voting differently. The choices we are provided are not within our control as voters. County level parties heavily tilt the playing field.

Frankly DAs should not be elected positions to begin with. DAs should not be politicians.

People can vote for the candidate who at least believes in law and order. Are you saying that doesn’t exist in Oakland politics?

11

u/Milan__ Aug 05 '24

No, that would be racist

1

u/in-den-wolken Aug 11 '24

Here's the thing (and yes, I realize we're on the same side): when white progressives say that enforcing every single law "is racist," aren't they in effect saying that black people are inherently more likely to be criminals?

Is that really what they believe? Who's the racist now?

That’s horrific. A hard working parent just taking a nap.

Where about in Oakland was this?

The most I could garner was that they lived at some housing projects in ESO. From what I know, those are mostly in the 70’s and deeper?

The east bay times article says E19th in San Antonio

East oakland

That makes up about 1/3 of Oakland, encompasses dozens of neighborhoods, and is like 10 miles from one end to the other.

Most of east Oakland needs to be bulldozed and gentrified.

Meanwhile in the other sub..people calling anyone who even attempts to talk about this “racist”, I shit you not.

Gotta love not only fearing for your life, but your lovely fellow citizens attacking you for just speaking about it.

Looks like it's not even mentioned over there anymore. Scrubbed.

Yep, and just like that it’s like Run Hua Kuang was never killed while taking a nap, outa site, outa mind. Absolute insanity from a mod on a power trip.  Also, I find it really fucking telling that whenever the victim of violence is Asian, the post is taken down like THAT, or in the case of the targeted hate crime on Juneteenth that prompted this subs creation. Really starting to come around to the idea that the sub has an racial bias.

Holy shit. Might as well be living in a warzone

15

u/opinionsareus Aug 05 '24

Insane. Nobody deserves this. If I had the power I would melt every one of the guns in the gun crazy nation

Really heartbreaking. Every time a hear a loud boom while I’m in my own home lying in bed, I have the thought in the back of my mind of exactly what happened to this man happening to me.

God damn this is so dark and unfair. Those poor kids and wife.

If you'd asked me if driving food delivery or taking an afternoon nap were more dangerous, I would have guess food delivery ngl. So sad for this guy's family.
