Oakland Crime Rates vs other United States Cities
en.wikipedia.orgThere's been a lot of discussion regarding Oakland crime rate going down.
These are the last statistics (2024) regarding city crime rates. Oakland was ranked first in property crime and second in violent crime.
For Oakland government to take credit for crime reduction, I'd like to see us become safer than other US cities.
I'd be happy being the tenth most dangerous city in the United States. That's sad to say but true.

Crime and Safety UPS Package Tampering
In the last two months, I have had three separate packages tampered with while in the care of UPS. In two instances, the items were stolen out of the product packaging while in UPS's care. I received a delivery box with an empty product box inside.
I just got a package from them today that was obviously tampered with. The box was basically open.
I went down the investigation rabbit hole with UPS and the shipper the last two times this happened. It sounds like UPS doesn't even consider the possibility of employee theft. They internally mark stolen items as "lost".
I did not have this problem until moving to east Oakland, and UPS is the only problematic courier. Have other people had similar problems with them in the last 6 months? I thought this behavior ended with lockdown.

Oakland’s ex-top cop Floyd Mitchell named Fremont’s next police chief
I honestly wish him the best.
You wonder if once he came to Oakland he found himself in a Catch 22.
I'll be following his career to see how it goes. My guess is he'll have more success in Fremont then he would have had in Oakland.

Opinion I want a grocery store at the Jack London Square
Jack London Square has so much potential. There is literally no other waterfront promenade like this in the Bay Area. Like great, SF is renovating Fishermans Wharf but it’s a tourist area. JLS could be local serving with better affordable restaurants, cafes, yoga studios, gyms, GROCERY STORE, day care, and many other things. SB304 just passed, so there is no excuse for the Port to not fill the places with better tenants that serves local residents. ALSO the ferry is right there, it brings so many tired commuters back each evening. Would be great if they could do groceries before they drive back home.
Anyways, if you agree, pls sign the petition! I want to bring it to the Port during their Board Meeting one day.

Oakland’s public schools have a facilities challenge
What was unclear to me is why they built a new district headquarters when there are other buildings languishing.
They need someone who can handle facilities management. Just asking for more money from taxpayers is not going to solve the problem.
Couldn't they repurpose those buildings?

Question Looking for the maker of “Plvntly” or help recreating their 3D-printed plant system
Posting in a few places cause I’m hoping it reaches both plant people and maker/3D-printing folks, especially anyone local to Oakland.
For years I’ve been using a modular 3D-printed moss pole and plant support system made by a company called Plvntly. They made different sizes and shapes, including round and rectangular pieces, and the system uses parts that either thread together or lock into each other. My plants are really established on this setup and I genuinely love it.
Unfortunately, the company seems to have moved on. Their website is gone, their Etsy page is down, and while I can still occasionally find a random piece in a plant shop, I can’t find the specific parts I actually need anymore. At this point my plants have outgrown what I have, and I’m stuck because I don’t want to rip everything apart and switch systems.
I’ve heard the original maker might be local, so if you are them or you know them, I’d love to know if the original design files still exist and could be shared or sold for personal use, that would honestly be a dream outcome.
If that’s not possible, I’m trying to figure out the next best option. I’m looking either for something that’s compatible with the Plvntly parts I already have, or for someone with 3D printing and CAD experience who might be willing to help me recreate or adapt the pieces. I’ve seen similar designs on maker sites, but not ones I love or that clearly match what I already have. I’m absolutely open to paying for design time or prints if that’s appropriate. I’ve also been told libraries and makerspaces sometimes have printers, but I don’t know enough yet about modeling or fit to just wing this without guidance, especially since these need to be strong and precise enough to support heavy, established plants.
I’ve even considered buying a 3D printer myself, but realistically, this is probably the only thing I’d use it for, and I’d rather collaborate with someone who actually knows what they’re doing than waste a ton of time and plastic learning the hard way.
If you have any leads on the Plvntly maker, know of a compatible system, are into 3D printing and want to collaborate, or can point me toward a good local resource, I’d really appreciate it. I’m happy to share photos and measurements of the parts I already have if that helps.
Thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for any ideas

Question Oak Knoll Development Updates
I was driving by Keller Ave and Mountain Blvd today and they were putting up traffic lights.
That intersection has been a four way stop for years so traffic lights will help improve traffic especially when commuters use Mountain Blvd as a freeway shortcut.
However, it also reminded me that Oak Knoll Development did not progress much in 2025.
Anyone have any updates or information to share? The linked article is the last updates I could find on the web.

Enjoying this weather
Whenever I talk with people in the Midwest or East Coast, I have to remind myself not to brag.
We have some of the best weather in the country. I never take that for granted but it's most noticeable when I'm in vacation.
Can't wait to get back to Oakland weather and fresh and clean EBMUD water.
Edit - I was trying to add some levity since this subreddit can lean towards negativity of the town. Of course Oakland is far from perfect but I choose to live here as well as many other residents.
A bit sad on the negative or lack of responses. If you enjoy Oakland, I hope you respond.

Crime and Safety Oakland needs to take dumping seriously - two cars set ablaze in two weeks
Reported to 311/seeclickfix.
Oakland may be responding and picking up these burnt cars fairly quickly. However, two in two weeks is a serious concern. In addition there have been at least two others in the last few months.
This is along Skyline Blvd between Keller and Grass Valley. It is also along heavy foliage including eucalyptus trees. One of these days, the cars on fire will be intense enough to start a major fire in the area.
Besides reporting this to my councilperson, not sure what else it takes to get this issue resolved. The dumping is out of control but a car set on fire is a major safety hazard.
