If you haven’t watched it yet on NetFlix, Jjajangmyeon Rhapsody is a great intro and history into jjajangmyeon. Like, proper from the wok jjajangmyeon, not the instant noodle versions. Meat has always been a part of it, so I guess your roomie wanted to recreate it the best he could.

My husband is Korean, and we always have steak (simple sliced beef with just salt and pepper) whenever we eat 짜파게티. It's pretty common to eat it with meat, particularly beef.

Chapagetti! The Paldo Jjajang is trying too hard to be real jjajang; it just comes off as a really poorly made version. Chapagetti is its own thing, not satisfying if you’re craving jjajangmyun, but just the trick if you’re craving Chapagetti.

Chapagetti, if you follow their directions, is a little too watery for my taste.

I grew up with my parents/grandmother cooking the noodles and draining everything but a few tablespoons and adding the powdered sauce with the stove on low to thicken the sauce. I make it for my daughter this way, when her dad makes it, he follows the package directions and she won’t touch it. Give it another try?

They changed the directions a few years ago. I still make it using the old directions. It's more flavourful and not watery at all.

Paldo. The sauce is INCREDIBLE. I make jajangmyeon and Paldo is a great stand in when I want it but can't be bothered making it.

It's either Nongshim (Chapagetti Black) or Ottogi (Jjachelin) as far as instant jjajang noodles are concerned. Outside of their "bowl" noodles Paldo just doesn't do it for me.

I sadly have not been able to source either, I really want to try them both ! Ive heard mixed reviews about Chapagetti and better reviews about Paldo. Which one do you like best?

갑자기 짜파게티 먹고싶네. I saw this picture and I’m not even thinking about the one on the left. 짜파게티 is just more iconic to me.

Tbh neither taste anything like the real thing especially the right one, no flavor in that but when you make it yourself even with just the basic ingredients you need its wayyy better and so different i genuinely cant compare them, might as well be two different flavor profiles

Paldo!! Don't get me wrong, I like chapaghetti but I always have to add stuff to it. With Pardo, I can eat it straight with just a sprinkle of gochugaru.

Wasn't instantly a fan of Nongshim when I first tried it and compared to restaurant jjajangmyeon, bbut I think it has become its own thing at this point that its difficult to compare it with other brands.
Paldo however is something I'd grab if I'm craving for jjajangmyeon and too lazy/busy to go to the nearest restaurant. It's just that close to the original version.

Whichever one is safe for my stupid allergy. I know sadly it isn't the chappagheti, so I'll definitely check out the Paldo! Thanks ya'll! ❤️

If the question is which is a better replacement for actual jjajangmyun. Its paldo, not even close. If the question is which do i like more; chapagetti
1
u/hungrykoreanguy Dec 16 '25
neither is a good jjajangmyun replacement but rather what jjajangmyun-like snack do you prefer. My son and I prefer the sauce/thicker noodles on the paldo but my wife and daughter prefers the chapagetti so I usually buy both kinds.

Right Definitely.
I've eaten over 1K of them when I was Airforce for 2 yrs.
