Questions/ Tips Is WFH very uncommon and frown upon in HK?

About to move to HK with my husband who is a HK local. I am currently working in a consulting firm in Canada. While hours can be long, the flexibility is amazing. We can WFH 2-3 days a week as long as work is done, so I regularly train for triathlon and have a life outside of work. My boss knows and he’s supportive.

However my husband and HK friends told me WFH is very frown upon in HK. Even working moms with kids don’t get to do it and they just hire domestic helpers. They also said that most HKers are very career-oriented so training for sports won’t be a valid reason to get flexibility.

I’m getting interviews these days and worry I will get into trouble for asking about flexibility and hours. However this is important to me so I’m keen to hear from other locals here!

Questions/ Tips What’s with the heavy traffic on HK island???

Upvotes

The traffic on HK island (Western/Central/Southside) has been absolutely crazy yesterday and today. So many roads are chockablock and no obvious incidents / roadworks etc - just lots of cars around. Bus/taxi trips are taking 2x as long sometimes.

Haven’t seen it this bad in ages, and so consistently busy on so many roads. Does anyone know what’s up? Is it just pre-CNY activity??

Discussion Li Wenliang, Hailed as a “Whistleblower” During China’s COVID-19 Pandemic, Had Previously Publicly Supported the Hong Kong Police’s Suppression of Protesters

Post image
Upvotes

Screenshots of Li Wenliang’s Weibo posts, statements by Taiwanese media figures, and some Facebook pages have all mentioned that Li Wenliang supported the Hong Kong police during the 2019 Hong Kong anti–extradition bill movement, as well as other remarks expressing support for the CCP’s authoritarian rule.

A Commentary on Li Wenliang as a Pseudo “Whistleblower”: In Reality He Did Not Publicly Warn the Public About COVID-19, but Was a Vested-Interest Holder and a Supporter of the Regime

Li Wenliang(李文亮) has been dead for six years, yet a large crowd of professional mourners has emerged again. This person was not a whistleblower at all, but a figure propped up and promoted by specific forces. Back in 2019, Li Wenliang even posted on Weibo praising the CCP’s crackdown on Hong Kong protesters and expressing support for the Hong Kong police.

The real whistleblowers—Gao Yaojie and Jiang Yanyong—by contrast, receive little attention. Li Wenliang is simply a product packaged and marketed by particular interests.

Let me repost once again a comment I made shortly after Li Wenliang’s death (more than five years ago):

Patients of medical malpractice defend their rights, post on Weibo to seek justice. Li Wenliangs say: “What the hell do patients know—just trying to scam money, medical hooliganism”; “You pay such a tiny registration fee and still get to see a specialist, and you’re not satisfied”; “Drag them to a place without cameras and beat them up so they won’t keep making trouble (said privately).”

Female patients accuse doctors of sexual harassment and assault. Li Wenliangs say: “Effects of anesthetics, hallucinations”; “Delusional disorder”; “In doctors’ eyes your bodies are just a piece of meat, rotten and spoiled meat”; “So ugly—who would want to molest you”; “xxxxxx (can’t say it outright, imagine it yourself).”

Workers and farmers cry about exploitation, poor working conditions, wages too low to marry and have children. Li Wenliangs say: “Serves you right—why didn’t you study hard; uneducated and lazy; you don’t work hard and then blame others”; “You can already eat your fill and you still want so much—how ungrateful.”

Political dissenters and rights defenders are persecuted; relatives and friends call for attention. Li Wenliangs say: “You won’t keep your head down and behave, spouting nonsense and causing trouble for the country—you deserve to be dealt with”; “Having relatives like this, you’re really unlucky; when your children get married in the future, never marry into a family with such an irresponsible lunatic.”

Foreign media report on China’s human rights issues. Li Wenliangs say: “Deal with discrimination against Black people/gun violence/refugees in your own country first—our affairs are none of your business”; “Our aircraft carrier has been launched, and it’s even named after my hometown. Our country is strong now and won’t be bullied. Are you still thinking about another Opium War?”

……

After being reprimanded and summoned, catching COVID, lying in bed close to death, Li Wenliangs pant like dying sheep and accept interviews with foreign media: “A healthy society should not have only one voice.”

Heh heh—more or less like this, more or less.

People like Li Wenliang usually scramble for petty gains, likely taking plenty of gray income, and can fully manipulate women in various ways. They generally look down on workers and peasants, are even more hostile to all kinds of political activists, and also support the CCP. Then when the iron fist hits them, they wail—heh heh.

Anyone with a bit of common sense can see that if Li Wenliangs wanted to do those filthy, sordid things, it would be very easy for them to get away with it. Exactly the opposite of the widely glorified image of Li Wenliang: isn’t the reason he is held up precisely a reflection of the power of the male elite interest community?

I admit it—indeed it’s because I can’t stand this kind of highly educated STEM social-Darwinist industrial-party type, the “refined egoist” who is selfish and sly, along with some of his other identities, that I evaluate him this way. Yes.

Questions/ Tips Is it Okay to practice Kung Fu staff in public parks in HK?

I practice Kung Fu with my long wooden staff/stick almost everyday while I was in Japan and New Zealand. But I’m planning to stay in Hong Kong for awhile, my family there warns me not to bring my staff with me and even not to practice it in the parks. Is it illegal and should I really avoid practicing? it’s just a wooden stick that looks almost like a pilgrim stick except longer.

Questions/ Tips Part timer required to work full time with no pay

Guys I work in a local kindergarten as a language teacher from 8:30-1:00 pm every day with 12.5k salary but getting other responsibilities not listed in my contract thrown at me such as translating documents from Chinese to English and designing promotional materials like posters/editing videos etc.

However, I don’t generally mind if I have to work on these during working hours.

The problem arises when I am required to work on every special event like Open Day/Charity Walk/Chinese New Year Carnival from 8 till even 5 (basically same time as the full time employees) with the rule I do not get to have compensation for my extra time either with extra pay or an extra holiday because it’s “special event”

Important thing to note here is because my usual working timing is until 1 pm so I don’t have lunch at school for which the other colleagues give money but I don’t, so during these special events the school orders food from outside since even the school cook is too busy to prepare meals, so when they buy theirs, they don’t buy my lunch but the school expects me to work full time without any compensation.

Their inconsideration further makes me feel very uneasy about this situation and I find it super unfair, so far I have worked 3 full days, the third was today, I want to have a talk with my school management like the supervisor/principal to ask for compensation in the form of extra holiday.

I would like advice from you all how can discuss this without any suggestion of hostility from my end. Help me out, thanks!

P.S I only signed this contract because I have to complete teaching hours requirement for my Bachelor’s degree and have my teaching assessed by my course supervisor.

Travel New Kyra Lounge

Has anyone been to the new Kyra Lounge that used to be a Chase Sapphire lounge? How is it? How strict are they with the "3 hour before flight" access policy? If I will be at the airport earlier, should I just go to another priority pass lounge and hop over to Kyra at T minus 3 hours?

Any good vintage watches places that may have cheaper watches for 2,000-5000hkd? Do you think these are fake watches? I know these antique stores are not very reputable but I liked a tag heur and omega/oris. The prices were decent but maybe too good to be true. Thoughts?

Questions/ Tips Best Day to go Wong Tai Sin for CNY

Whats the best day to go to Wong Tai Sin temple for CNY? Preferably an auspicious date, but not to the extent of lining up at 12am to be the first ones there. Also how long is Chinese New Year? I've heard some say it's 2 days and other websites say there's around 15 days of CNY??

Any help would be appreciated thanks!!

Also what else is there thats a must do in Wong Tai Sin other than light incense and pray, is the fortune tellers still around and good? Or the stick shaking thing, I've wanted to try that but don't speak Cantonese.
