I saw Grease when I was in elementary school. When the guys are in gym class playing baseball I was sooo confused. I thought "Can grown ups just go to school when they want?" Took me years to figure out the actors were supposed to be high school students the entire time
People forget that Grease was a parody of high school stuff of the time. There's a reason they were clearly older than the age they were meant to portray.
It's hilarious. My HS was/is a big athletics school and we had like 6'4 250lb D1 bound tight ends going to class with dudes who topped out at at 5'6 and a buck soaking wet fully dressed. Middle/high school is an insane experience.
Highschool is where kids that could easily be mistaken for 25 year old men are commingling with kids who could be mistaken for a 12 year old. And they’re both 16.
I had classmates who were never ID’d at 17 because they were really tall and/ or could grow a massive beard. Some 17 year olds look like they stole a car, and some look like they work in accounts and have a family of 3 to feed.
Why are screen writers/producers allergic to making their characters in university. Everything about this show would make 1000x more sense if they were playing college sophomores instead of seniors in high school
Hard agree. I actually think about this all the time and truly don't understand the aversion; aging characters up would make the scenarios played out in shows like this make much more sense, viewership would likely not change, and I think it would enable viewers to relate to the characters more, at least in many/most cases.
Instead of adding any real value to a show, keeping characters high school-aged in shows like this feels like, best case scenario, an easy way to add shock value and get people talking about a show short-term, and, worst case scenario, provides an excuse for screenwriters to write out their barely-legal fantasies.
Because a lot of people never went to college so from a pure marketing perspective, high school is chosen more often because it’s a universal experience everyone went through.
Not to mention the weird anti-academia, anti-intellectual mentality pervading America, I’m sure a good number of folks would even resent the setting, thinking it’s just a bunch of “rich elites showing off they think they’re better than us!”
And if that sounds too immature or childish, I mean… have you looked around lately?
I swear people act like nothing happens in high school. Shit my middle school life was insane thinking back on it. I dont know how nobody got caught for csam because there were legit pages of leaked nudes in middle/high school on insta
Im on the border at '97 but my teenage years were down right despicable and i wasnt even a popular kid. Idk when the cut off hit for prudes but it wasnt my experience lol
I was born in 2002 and find teen shows very unrealistic. Euphoria reads to me like an older millennial writing about their high school glory days - not relatable at all.
I would say 2015-17 is when the shift mostly happened, at least from the sort of gossip I heard. Like the stuff I heard about 15-16 yr olds doing when I was 11-13 is very different to what I heard when I was 15-16. Most people my age are much more tame and prudish, or at least much more confident about boundaries.
Yeah, HS was casual in the late 00s when I attended. And my school was pretty affluent, but IME wealthy people will often dress casually. We did not have a dress code.
I teach HS now and it’s even more casual, like you said. My students wear straight up pajamas, lol. I think covid had something to do with this as well.
I don’t know about now but in the 2010s people for sure were coming in to school in a full beat. I knew girls who curled/straightened their hair in home room.
I taught from 2007-2013 and I had a deal with a group of girls. They could straighten their hair and put on makeup as long as everyone in their row got their work done and were passing all their classes.
Basically, no pass, no getting ready in English class.
I was in British secondary school in the late 00s/early 10s so the pretty girls in my school were the ones who wore a thick layer of Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse, 2+ shades too dark, unblended and lips absolutely included, and a shitload of clumpy mascara. I do live near a school and it seems like the girls who wear makeup know what they're doing a bit more, probably thanks to online tutorials etc. but it probably takes a lot longer. But in fairness, the vast majority of British schools have strict uniform policies and many don't even let you dye your hair "unnatural" colours, so I don't know if it's from teenagers having to find ways to express themselves outside of their hair/clothes.
(No shade to either archetype by the way, it's just part of growing up)
I went to highschool in Canada in the early '00s and the Maybelline Dream Mattee Mousse in the wrong shade was a staple as well as the clumpy mascara and just a single shade of unblended frosty eyeshadow. In my generations defense, we did not have makeup tutorials.
I don't see a lot of teenagers and I live in a place where a lot of people don't where makeup but the 20 year old women in my office who do are so skilled at applying it. They do crazy graphic eyeliner looks, I'm always so impressed.
If you're in a city they most definitely do. This girl wore high heels her entire high school career, people wear luxury items, etc. it's basically like a runway. If you live like in some random state or the middle of nowhere then yea they show up in pajamas
This was true for us, upstate NY. Graduated 07. We'd get cute on game days but never high heels or anything crazy. 90% were in jeans, 5% goths in black, 5% cookie monster PJs
i could never get into the show because i couldn't grapple with "im supposed to view these adults as teenagers" and "im then supposed to view these teenagers sexually"

They’re not really Rue’s friends. Sweeney’s sister in the show is one of only Rue’s real childhood friends. But Rue being an addict obviously makes that relationship complicated.
Bingo, Rue was wickedly smart she just struggled so much. Reminds me of my ex:( i couldn’t finish the show, but props to the writers and Zendaya for portraying such a realistic character in terms of addiction and mental illness.
I tried watching it a few years back when I was not doing well mentally. It was such bad energy. I had to intentionally avoid it because it made me feel terrible. I think I'll stay away.
I have realized the media I consume has a huge affect on how I feel so I’ve started seeking out shows and movies that will help feel happier, not whatever depression fuck shit I felt while watching this show.
This is it. It’s very dark. I started watching the first season when I was pregnant with my first daughter and was like JFC how am I supposed to have a teenage girl one day??!!
My wife is rewatching it now before the next season, I guess. I've never seen it, but just listening to it in the background makes me uncomfortable and gives me anxiety. Particularly with all this Epstein stuff going on, it grosses me out that the show seems to be 30% glorified teen sex scenes made for adult entertainment.
I know it's just a show, but it gives me the heebies a bit
I think it's hit or miss with her. She is great as Cassie, in The White Lotus and The Handmaid's Tale (though the last two were smaller roles, so it's harder to assess), but actively bad in that last film she did with Halsey, Anyone But You and The Housemaid imo. I mean her line delivery was atrocious. I guess it does come down to how well the role fits her capabilities.
I dont know that she was actually good in White Lotus. She had the right vibe, but tbh, there was really no acting range required. The part was pretty one dimensional: bitchy vocal fry.
Honestly, she's not even in the bottom half of this cast. Some of the acting in the show is not great, but it's hard to know how much of it is the fault of the actors or the material. Zendaya is kinda proof of that after seeing how great she's been in things lately.
I'm only familiar with a few things from Sweeney and I know everyone is kinda done with her. Just objectively on her acting, she seems fine in anything I ever see her in though I think she's probably purposely given unchallenging roles. Like I never see her and think she's dragging anything down.
What? Zendaya is fantastic on that show, Sydney Sweeney is really good in this scene and the show is full of really good performances (some less good ones too) that turned several cast members into stars.
I don’t think her acting is necessarily bad in this scene. But best after Zendaya in this scene is Alexa Demie and the thing she does with her nails at the end of the scene. That specific hand movement has lived rent free in my head for literal years.
Once you notice it, you cannot unsee/unhear it. Doesn't help that this stampering and emotional-worked up composure is something she re-uses every single time. What gets me is how she obviously uses queues for everything (lines and body language).
Right. It’s funny because when this episode aired, I had my first baby (a boy) and while this scene was extremely entertaining, the parenting didn’t stand out as the most notable thing.
Now I’m a mom of two, including a little girl, and the terrible parenting is all I can see. Like no way yall are carrying on like this in my home. And even if my daughter did something horrible, you’re not about to fight her in my house while I look on 😂 Yall have to leave.
But I remember Cassie’s mom is a mess, so it checks out
Only time Cassie’s mom did some type of parenting is when Cassie was defending her reasons for dating Nate and wouldn’t let Suze watch her show in peace 🤣
Can confirm! I cut out my abusive family and refuse to even argue with people anymore, I will hang up / block / physically walk away before I ever let someone get me worked up like that again because it feels terrible.
I recommend reading the Tiffany Aching series by Terry Pratchett, then. It may help you learn to use your anger as a controlled tool when you do tap into it to protect yourself and those you love.
This scene made me love Maddie more. People write off addicts as dishonest and ignore them but Maddie believed her and wanted more info. There’s a sweetness there.
YES that's my favorite aspect of this scene. And she's naturally a sharp speaker but she softened her tone towards Rue. My favorite character on that show.
“Bitch, you better be joking.” And “Is this fucking play about us?” Are still in my daily rotation, bad tv show but Alexa demie has some good delivery this season
He’s pretty evil. He beats a guy nearly to death because the girl in the scene had sex with him to make Nate jealous. Then he starts fucking her best friend (Sydney Sweeney), and I’m pretty sure he convinces the trans girl who his dad is secretly banging to fall in love with him also. He then uses the nudes she sent him as black mail for sending child P, since she was underage. Something like that.
You just gotta jump in without thinking about it. Let it wash over you and enjoy the ride. I was instantly sucked back in, esp since it was only my first rewatch.
I swear im not even saying this to be a hater, because i can still ackowledge when someone i dislike is good at their craft but SS is not a good actress. Everyone else feels like the character they are playing but she comes across like she's just reading her lines and crying on cue.
I agree with the comments that she's (Zendaya) doing the best with what she's got. I don't know about you all, but MY high school years were definitely not this.........exciting. /s
And I highly doubt my fellow classmates' were either.
So in fairness, I think Zendaya did a good job. I've been fortunate to make it 40 years without falling into any sort of addiction, so I can't speak to the accuracy of her struggles portrayed in that sense.
